Chapter 83 - The light that remained

🌑 WHEN LIGHT WALKS WITH SHADOW

SEASON 4 — EPISODE 10

THE LIGHT THAT REMAINED

---

OPENING — THE MORNING AFTER

Morning sunlight reached the windows of the abandoned observatory.

Aeryx sat beside the old map, studying the northern markings.

Mira's notebook lay open beside him.

Raven approached with two cups of tea.

"You're still staring at that map?"

Aeryx didn't look up.

"Trying to understand where she went."

Raven placed a cup beside him.

"Then drink something before you start seeing imaginary roads."

Aeryx took the cup.

"Thanks."

Raven sat opposite him.

"So, north?"

Aeryx closed the notebook.

"North."

---

THE PLACE SHE LEFT BEHIND

By afternoon, they reached a small settlement.

Several villagers were repairing a damaged stone wall. Fresh marks remained on the ground where something powerful had struck it.

Aeryx approached an elderly man.

"Excuse me. Did someone pass through here recently? A young woman. Golden light."

The man's expression changed.

"You know her?"

Aeryx hesitated.

"I'm looking for her."

The old man studied his face.

"Then you must be the boy she was searching for."

Aeryx went still.

"What?"

"She asked about you. A boy carrying a sword. Someone named Aeryx."

For a moment, Aeryx couldn't find an answer.

Raven glanced at him but said nothing.

"How long ago?" Aeryx finally asked.

"Two days."

The old man pointed toward the northern road.

"She crossed the old stone bridge. But before leaving, she helped us repair our wall."

"Why?" Raven asked.

The man smiled faintly.

"She said there was no point protecting a place if nobody could live in it afterward."

Aeryx looked down at the pendant in his hand.

That sounded like Mira.

---

THE BRIDGE BENEATH THE BRIDGE

Farther north, Mira stood before an ancient stone bridge.

Its surface was covered in weathered symbols.

One symbol was familiar.

The golden sun of Solarin.

Beneath it was another mark: a circle divided by a thin vertical line.

Mira placed her palm against the stone.

Nothing happened.

She examined the symbol again, then noticed a small indentation shaped like the pendant she carried.

She pressed it.

A low sound echoed beneath the bridge.

Part of the stone floor shifted, revealing a staircase descending into darkness.

Mira looked down.

"So this is where you hid it."

She began descending.

---

THE NAMES THAT REMAINED

The staircase opened into a chamber filled with old shelves.

Most of the records had been damaged, but some remained protected inside sealed containers.

Mira moved between them until she found a metal archive marked with the Solarin symbol.

She opened it.

Inside were several old documents.

Her eyes moved across the first page.

HOUSE OF SOLARIN — SURVIVOR RECORD

She turned it.

Her father's name.

Her mother's name.

Then—

MIRA SOLARIN — STATUS: SURVIVED

Her fingers stopped.

She turned another page.

AERYX SOLARIN — STATUS: UNCONFIRMED

Mira stared at the words.

"Unconfirmed..."

She touched her brother's name.

"He survived. I know he did."

A voice came from behind her.

"You always were certain about him."

Mira turned.

The Record Keeper stood near the entrance.

Older than Mira remembered. Her hood was lowered, revealing a tired face.

Mira's expression hardened.

"You knew."

The woman didn't answer immediately.

"You knew he might be alive, and you never told me?"

"I had possibilities. Not proof."

"You could have told me."

"And sent you running toward a danger neither of us understood?"

Mira looked back at the archive.

"He's my brother."

"I know."

"Then you should have understood."

Silence filled the chamber.

The Record Keeper approached the archive and opened a hidden compartment.

Inside was a sealed letter.

The handwriting was unmistakable.

Mira recognised it immediately.

Her father's.

"He left this with the records," the woman said. "He wanted it preserved until both of you could find your way here."

Mira took the letter carefully.

"Why didn't you give it to me earlier?"

"Because you weren't ready to hear what it meant."

Mira looked at her.

"Then tell me now."

The Record Keeper lowered her eyes.

"Your father was protecting more than a family secret. Someone wanted the records destroyed. He believed the past would eventually repeat itself if the truth disappeared."

"Who?"

The woman remained silent.

Mira held the letter against her chest.

"Fine. I'll find the answer myself."

She turned toward the stairs.

"And I'll find Aeryx."

---

THE SAME ROOM

Later that evening, Aeryx and Raven reached the bridge.

Aeryx noticed the indentation near the sun symbol.

"Someone opened this recently."

Raven examined the stone.

"Then we're not far behind."

They descended into the chamber.

The room was quiet.

The Record Keeper and Mira were already gone.

Aeryx searched the archive.

His eyes stopped at the survivor record.

Mira's name.

Alive.

He read it twice.

Then he found his own.

AERYX SOLARIN — STATUS: UNCONFIRMED

Raven stood beside him.

"At least now we know what they believed."

Aeryx didn't answer.

He noticed something carved into the stone beside the exit.

A small message.

AERYX, IF YOU'RE ALIVE, FOLLOW THE LIGHT.

He recognised the handwriting.

His expression softened.

"She left this."

Raven looked at the words.

"Looks like she knew someone might follow."

Aeryx touched the carving.

For the first time in years, the distance between them felt smaller.

"Let's go."

---

THE LETTER

Night.

Mira sat beside a small campfire.

The sealed letter rested in her hands.

For several minutes, she simply looked at it.

Then she opened it.

The paper was old, but the handwriting remained clear.

To my children,

If you are reading this, then the past has finally caught up with you.

I cannot tell you what to become. I cannot choose which road you must take.

But I hope that when you find each other, you will remember something important.

You were never meant to carry this world alone.

Whatever happens, find your way home.

Mira lowered the letter.

Her eyes remained on the final line.

For a moment, she was no longer the woman who could face monsters without hesitation.

She was simply a girl who had spent years looking for her brother.

"I'm coming, Aeryx."

She folded the letter and placed it safely inside her coat.

Then she stood and continued north.

---

FINAL SCENE — TWO ROADS

Aeryx walked beneath the same night sky.

Raven followed a few steps behind.

Neither knew exactly how far remained.

Neither knew what waited at the end of the road.

But somewhere ahead, Mira was moving toward the same truth.

One brother searching for his sister.

One sister searching for her brother.

And between them, a secret their parents had spent their lives protecting.

The distance was still there.

But it was no longer endless.
