Chapter 60 - Chapter 60

The Prophet closed his eyes, a serene, beatific smile spreading across his face, and began to chant in a strange language that was neither ancient Egyptian nor any modern tongue of the wastes.

It was a bizarre litany of his own design, a meticulous sequence of commands born from generations of his cult misinterpreting the entity's raw psychic screams as divine scripture.

He genuinely believed he was speaking the sacred language of his god, offering his mortal flesh as its willing and perfect avatar.

To the energy entity, however, his mental projections were not an act of worship.

They were an invasion.

His focused, arrogant, and demanding consciousness struck the creature like a sharpened metal spike driven directly into an already wounded mind.

"He's not merging with it," Katrina said, her voice dropping into a tight, frantic register as she watched the diagnostic readings on a nearby half-functional laboratory console spike dangerously into the red.

"He's trying to dominate the field. His fanaticism, his absolute ego, it's acting like a highly focused psychic weapon. He's trying to systematically overwrite its consciousness with his own."

The shimmering corona surrounding the reactor core flared violently in response.

The deep hum of the chamber rose in pitch within seconds, transforming into a piercing metallic shriek that echoed through the vast spherical chamber.

The entity, which had spent decades thrashing in confused and blind pain, was now focusing its vast agony into something far more dangerous.

Directed rage.

It had finally found a target.

The intrusive mind of the man touching its cage.

Tendrils of crimson energy, darker, thicker, and far more solid than before, lashed outward from the center of the core.

They struck the inside of the high-frequency containment field with tremendous force.

The protective barrier sparked, crackled, and visibly buckled with every impact.

The Prophet simply laughed.

He firmly believed the terrifying display was a sign of divine acceptance, a demonstration of infinite power now resting beneath his command.

"Yes!" he roared, his white robes whipping violently around his legs as the air inside the sphere began to churn.

"Show them our true power! Show the unbelievers the face of their new god!"

His robed zealots, gathered along the narrow catwalks behind him, fell to their knees on the metal grating.

They wept openly, caught between religious joy and pure terror, completely convinced they were witnessing their Prophet ascend to literal godhood.

Aris and the others saw something entirely different.

They saw a madman poking a wounded leviathan with a sharpened stick.

"He's going to cause a total containment breach!" Aris yelled over the rising cacophony of alarms.

He grabbed the railing of the gantry as the entire structural framework groaned beneath their feet.

"If that high-frequency field fails completely, the entity will expand uncontrollably into our physical space. It won't just release another psychic shockwave, Zarok. The energy release will trigger a catastrophic chain reaction. It could vaporize this entire mountain range and everyone inside it!"

The metal catwalk beneath their boots trembled violently.

A brilliant shower of blue sparks rained down from a ruptured power conduit directly overhead.

The Prophet, completely lost inside his delusion, pushed his will even harder against the entity's boundaries.

He desperately tried to force his consciousness into the shifting core, determined to possess its energy.

For a fraction of a second, it appeared to work.

A brief, flickering image of the Prophet's triumphant face appeared within the roiling crimson waves, ghostlike and distorted.

His followers gasped in frantic adoration.

But it was a fatal miscalculation.

He had not conquered the entity.

He had merely given it a target.

The energy being, acting in its raw and primal state, responded to the mental intrusion exactly as a living body responds to a foreign infection.

It began to absorb him.

The Prophet's triumphant expression twisted suddenly into confusion.

Then disbelief.

Then absolute horror.

He realized that he was no longer in control of the transaction.

The crimson tendrils no longer struck the containment field alone.

They broke through the damaged resonance lines and wrapped around his physical form, pulling his consciousness inward.

"No," he stammered, his confidence instantly shattering as the golden staff slipped from his numbed fingers.

"This is not... I am the one who commands the light! I am the Sun-Blessed!"

His screams of religious ecstasy transformed within seconds into screams of genuine, unadulterated terror.

The entity began to consume him.

The Prophet's body, still standing physically upon the central platform, went completely rigid.

The human contours of his face locked into a frozen mask.

His eyes flared with the exact same violent crimson light radiating from the reactor core.

Then something entirely inhuman erupted from his lips.

It was a grinding, multilayered chorus of raw pain, a shriek of energy given physical form.

The entity was not granting him godhood.

It was using his body as a biological instrument, forcing its trans-dimensional agony directly into the physical world.

The resulting psychic pressure inside the spherical chamber became unbearable.

It was no longer a background radiation of loneliness or a distant static hum.

It had become a focused, crushing assault of pure suffering that hammered against the skulls of everyone inside the vault.

The remaining Children of the Sun stared in absolute horror.

Their charismatic leader was not ascending.

He was being destroyed.

His body had become a hollow puppet for the very power he had sought to command.

The theological faith that had served as the foundation of their existence for generations shattered in a single moment.

Panic erupted.

Several cultists screamed, dropping their scimitars as they fled desperately toward the circular entrance.

They reached the doorway only to discover that the massive twenty-foot alloy door had sealed itself against the mountain.

Others simply collapsed onto the metal grating of the catwalks, their minds breaking beneath the unbearable weight of the psychic onslaught.

The most fanatical among them, the heavily armed elite guards who had marched directly behind their Prophet into the core, were the first to be fully consumed by the amplified wave of the curse.

Their eyes became glazed and bloodshot.

With guttural, animalistic snarls, they turned violently upon one another.

Then upon Aris and his companions.

At the center of the sphere, the reactor core itself became critically unstable.

The Prophet's attempt to force a psychic merge had damaged the delicate regulatory balance within the high-frequency containment system.

The glowing field flickered and warped like a dying flame.

Massive chunks of ancient stone broke loose from the structural framework above, crashing into the swirling abyss below with the sound of thunder.

The entire chamber was beginning to tear itself apart.

"The Prophet's mind is acting like a cancer inside the entity's network!" Katrina shouted.

Her hands flew across the smoking diagnostic console as another shower of sparks erupted near her face.

"It's causing a cascading feedback loop! The entity's primal pain is amplified by his human terror, which makes the entity lash out more violently, which increases his terror even further!"

Her eyes widened as another line of data appeared across the failing screen.

"It's accelerating exponentially! We're heading toward total system failure!"

"We have to stop this now!" Zarok yelled.

His heavy blade rang against steel as he expertly parried a wild, murderous strike from an elite cultist charging down the gantry.

"Forget the Prophet, Katrina! He's already gone! Deal with the immediate threat!"

With a powerful shove, he forced Seren and Jacob behind his broad shoulders, creating a defensive line against the handful of maddened zealots.

The battle dissolved into desperate chaos.

Steel clashed against steel.

Emergency alarms screamed.

Debris fell from the ceiling.

And beneath it all, the entity's agony continued to shake the foundations of the mountain.

Amid the swirling debris and the clash of weapons, Seren did something unexpected.

She closed her eyes.

She shut out the physical danger surrounding her.

The collapsing catwalk.

The screaming cultists.

The flashing emergency lights.

The raw terror filling the chamber.

Instead, she turned inward.

She pushed past the external waves of rage and mechanical panic, searching for the true source of the broadcast.

She had felt it before.

At the threshold of the sealed door.

That deep, underlying loneliness.

It was still there.

Buried beneath the new layers of crimson agony.

Through her empathic senses, Seren no longer saw the entity as a monster.

She did not see a curse.

She did not see an ancient god or an old-world weapon.

She saw something else.

A terrified child.

A consciousness trapped in a pitch-black room.

A being that had been ripped from everything it knew and imprisoned inside a world it could not understand.

And now, on top of all its existing pain, someone had entered its mind and tried to force it into submission.

It wasn't evil.

It wasn't trying to destroy the wasteland.

It was terrified.

"It's in pain," Seren said.

Her voice was quiet, but it carried such absolute certainty that Jacob turned toward her.

"It's not trying to kill us, Zarok."

She swallowed hard as another wave of agony passed through the chamber.

"It's just screaming because it hurts."

Her eyes opened.

They fixed themselves on the violent crimson storm surrounding the ancient sarcophagus.

"We can't fight it with steel."

For the first time since entering the reactor chamber, Zarok hesitated.

Seren took a slow step forward.

"We have to help it."

Her words, spoken in the eye of the psychological storm, changed the meaning of everything they had come here to do.

They were no longer fighting a curse.

They were trying to save the being that had become one.
