Chapter 38 - Chapter 38

The violet light disappeared as quickly as it had appeared.

For several seconds, the five travelers remained completely still beneath the ancient temple, listening to the silence.

Then Zarok spoke.

"We leave."

Katrina looked toward the corridor ahead.

"We cannot simply walk into another trap."

"We cannot stay here either."

Zarok pointed toward the ceiling.

"The cult knows we entered this temple. If we remain outside, they will surround the mesa before sunrise."

Jacob glanced back toward the direction of the canyon.

"And the canyon is behind us."

"Exactly."

Katrina studied the ancient markings one final time before rolling up her maps.

"The temple is our only route forward."

Seren carefully examined the strange symbols glowing faintly along the walls.

"They are reacting to something."

X instinctively touched his pendant.

The warmth had returned.

"To me."

Nobody contradicted him.

That silence bothered X more than any accusation could have.

They began moving through the lower passage, keeping close together. The corridor narrowed as it descended, forcing them into single file. The walls were covered with carvings of the sun crossing a darkened sky, followed by images of human figures carrying strange circular objects toward a mountain.

Jacob stopped.

"These aren't religious scenes."

Katrina turned toward him.

"What do you see?"

"Construction."

He pointed at one of the figures.

"Look at the tools. They are not ceremonial. They are engineering instruments."

Katrina moved closer.

"The mountain."

She traced the carving with her fingers.

"It appears repeatedly."

Seren frowned.

"Why would an ancient temple depict a mountain so far from here?"

Jacob's expression darkened.

"Perhaps because it wasn't far from here when the drawings were made."

Katrina looked at him.

"You think the landscape changed?"

"Over thousands of years? Completely possible."

A distant rumble interrupted them.

Dust drifted from the ceiling.

Zarok immediately raised one hand.

Everyone stopped.

Another rumble.

This time, they heard something beneath it.

Voices.

The cult had entered the temple.

"They found the upper chamber," Zarok whispered.

Katrina looked ahead.

"Then we move faster."

They continued through the passage.

After several minutes, it opened into a long rectangular room. Broken statues lined both walls. Unlike the desecrated temple above, these statues had been left untouched.

Their faces were strangely calm.

At the center of the room stood a stone basin filled with perfectly clear water.

Seren approached it cautiously.

"Water."

Jacob stared.

"After thousands of years?"

Katrina crouched beside the basin.

"There must be an underground source."

Seren dipped her fingers into it.

Her expression immediately changed.

"This isn't ordinary water."

X stepped closer.

"What is it?"

"Clean."

She looked almost astonished.

"Completely clean. No contamination. No blight."

Katrina's eyes narrowed.

"That shouldn't be possible."

Seren lifted her wet fingers.

"There is something else."

She closed her eyes.

"The water carries a very weak resonance."

X felt the pendant grow warmer.

He stepped away.

The water immediately became still.

"What happened?" Jacob asked.

"I don't know."

X stared at the basin.

"It reacted to me."

Katrina examined him carefully.

"Don't touch it again."

X nodded.

They moved on.

The passage eventually opened into a chamber containing dozens of stone tablets. Most were cracked, but several remained remarkably intact.

Jacob's eyes widened.

"A historical archive."

Katrina immediately began examining them.

"We don't have time."

"We might not get another chance."

Jacob carefully lifted one of the tablets.

"This one mentions Akhenaten."

Katrina joined him.

"What does it say?"

Jacob read the ancient markings slowly.

"Something about a servant."

X looked over.

"A servant?"

Jacob continued.

"An unnamed guardian who was entrusted with preserving the king's final will."

X's chest tightened.

"Does it give a name?"

Jacob shook his head.

"No."

X looked away.

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then Katrina noticed something.

"Wait."

She pointed toward the lower portion of the tablet.

"There is a symbol."

It was a simple circle crossed by three lines.

X recognized it.

He had seen it before.

Not in the canyon.

Not in the desert.

Somewhere inside his fragmented memories.

A chamber.

A stone door.

His own hand pressing against this exact symbol.

X stepped backward.

"I know that."

Everyone turned toward him.

"What do you mean?" Katrina asked.

"I've seen it."

"Where?"

"I don't know."

X pressed his fingers against his temple.

The memory came in fragments.

Torchlight.

Stone.

A voice.

Not angry.

Not accusing.

Desperate.

Protect them.

The vision vanished.

X staggered.

Seren caught his arm.

"X."

"I'm fine."

"You aren't."

He looked at her.

For the first time, there was fear in his eyes.

"I remembered a door."

Katrina's expression sharpened.

"What kind of door?"

"Stone. Very large. There was this symbol on it."

He pointed toward the tablet.

"That one."

Jacob slowly lowered the tablet.

"Then perhaps your memories aren't random."

Katrina nodded.

"They may be responding to locations."

Zarok looked toward the passage behind them.

"Then this temple may be triggering memories."

"Or unlocking them," Katrina said.

Another crash echoed from above.

The cult was getting closer.

Zarok tightened his grip on his sword.

"Enough speculation. We need a defensible position."

Katrina nodded.

They moved deeper into the ruins.

The passage eventually became warmer. A faint orange glow appeared ahead.

They emerged onto a narrow overlook overlooking an enormous underground chamber.

Everyone stopped.

Below them stood a vast circular structure buried beneath the temple.

Stone rings surrounded a central platform, all connected by enormous channels carved into the floor.

At the center was an empty pedestal.

X stared at it.

His pendant began to glow.

The chamber responded.

One by one, ancient lights awakened around the circular structure.

Violet.

Then blue.

Then white.

A low hum spread through the chamber.

Katrina whispered.

"This is not a temple."

Jacob stared downward.

"No."

His voice was barely audible.

"It's a machine."

The realization settled over them.

The ancient builders had not constructed the temple merely to worship the sun.

They had constructed something beneath it.

Something designed to interact with the heavens.

Something that had survived long after the people who built it had vanished.

Seren looked at X.

"Do you feel anything?"

X nodded.

"Someone is waiting."

Zarok's expression hardened.

"Who?"

X did not answer immediately.

He could feel something at the edge of his awareness.

Not the violent presence from the canyon.

Not the rage of Akhenaten.

Something quieter.

Older.

Almost familiar.

Then the pendant went dark.

The machine stopped humming.

The chamber returned to silence.

Katrina looked at the empty pedestal.

"The celestial key."

Jacob nodded.

"Whatever it is, this machine was built to receive it."

A sound came from behind them.

Footsteps.

The group turned.

The cult had reached the lower passage.

Their distant chanting echoed through the stone.

Zarok drew his blade.

"They're here."

Katrina grabbed her pack.

"Then we need to reach the key before they do."

They moved quickly through the chamber, following the circular markings toward another concealed passage.

X remained at the center of the group.

For the first time since awakening in the desert, he was no longer certain that his forgotten past was merely something waiting to be remembered.

Perhaps it was something waiting to be awakened.

And somewhere beneath the temple, the ancient machine had recognized him.

The five disappeared into the darkness just as the first cultist entered the chamber above.

The hunt had followed them underground.
