Minutes later, Lyvana woke to the sound of sirens, then heavy boots running toward the car.
"We've got a vehicle down the embankment!" a voice shouted. "I need a medic over here, now!"
Lyvana tried to breathe, but her chest felt heavy. She heard the sound of metal groaning as someone pulled at the door. Then everything went dark once more.
The next time Lyvana opened her eyes, she was lying on a stretcher, and she was being taken to an ambulance.
"Stay with us, Lyvana," a voice said. It was deep and calm, belonging to a paramedic hovering over her.
"Julian..." she chocked out.
"We found your phone, honey. We're getting in touch with your emergency contacts. Just focus on breathing."
As they loaded her into the ambulance, the doors closed shut. The pain in her head was dull now, but the fear in her heart was sharper. This wasn't an accident. It had been a hit.
At the hospital, she was moved quickly from the gurney to an exam table.
