Chapter 57 - The Gentle Poison Calls

I unfold the heavy parchment to read the speech my idiot husband wrote for me.

Wow. This is way too long. As I skim through the elegant calligraphy, I quickly realize it is completely submissive and incredibly boring. 

It adds absolutely no depth to my position as the Imperial Consort; it's just a bunch of flowery political fluff about how 'honored' I am and how much I 'care' about this treaty. Decorative nonsense.

"Boring," I murmur, carelessly tossing the incredibly important imperial document aside onto the silk sheets.

Just then, a soft knock echoes from the door. "Your Highness?" Elin asks.

"Come in, Elin," I say, sitting up as she enters carrying a massive, steaming tray of breakfast.

"Ohhh, I was so hungry!" I cheer, my eyes lighting up as she sets the tray down in front of me.

"Your Highness," Elin begins softly, keeping her head bowed. "About the 'noodles' final test in the evening... the royal head chef requested your time to oversee the final broth."
