The soreness didn't come immediately.
It waited until Aren woke the next morning, muscles stiff in a way that had nothing to do with overexertion and everything to do with adaptation. His chakra pathways felt… denser. Not blocked. Not strained.
Conditioned.
He sat up slowly, eyes half-lidded as the system came online.
[Post-Training Assessment Complete]
[Physical Fatigue: Moderate]
[Chakra Network Stress: Acceptable]
[Overall Readiness: Improving]
Good.
Outside, Konoha was already awake. Vendors shouted, shinobi moved across rooftops, and somewhere in the distance, explosions echoed faintly—probably Lee training too hard again.
Aren finished breakfast quickly and headed out.
Training Ground Eleven this time.
Not because it was empty.
Because it wasn't.
By the time he arrived, several familiar chakra signatures were already present. Naruto's was impossible to miss—loud, unfocused, but overflowing. Sakura stood nearby, practicing tree-climbing again despite clearly having mastered it. Sasuke leaned against a post, arms crossed.
And Ino was there too, kneeling beside Hinata, speaking quietly.
Aren took it in without comment.
The Konoha Twelve weren't training in isolated pockets anymore.
They were converging.
That mattered.
"Yo!" Naruto waved when he spotted Aren. "You're the guy everyone keeps talking about, right?"
Aren nodded once. "Aren."
Naruto grinned. "I'm Naruto! Wanna spar?"
"No."
Naruto blinked. "Huh?"
"Incompatible objectives," Aren continued calmly. "You need explosive output. I'm training pressure control."
Naruto stared for a second—then laughed. "Man, you're weird. I like it!"
Sakura sighed. "He's always like this."
Kakashi appeared without warning.
"Good," he said, eye smiling. "Everyone's here."
That alone sent a ripple through the group.
"This isn't formal instruction," Kakashi continued. "Consider it… cross-pollination. The Chunin Exams won't separate you neatly. You'll face unfamiliar styles under stress."
His gaze lingered briefly on Aren.
"So today, we apply pressure."
Teams mixed.
Deliberately.
Aren found himself paired with Hinata against Kiba and Naruto.
Ino sat on the sidelines at first, eyes closed, clearly sensing chakra fluctuations rather than watching directly.
"Begin," Kakashi said.
Naruto charged instantly.
Predictable.
Aren didn't move.
Hinata did.
She stepped forward just enough to force Naruto to adjust his angle. That half-second was all Aren needed.
He snapped his wrist.
Wind Style: Pressure Cut.
The compressed air burst low and wide—not at Naruto's body, but at his feet.
The ground cracked.
Naruto stumbled, momentum broken, skidding sideways as Kiba leapt in to compensate.
Too fast.
Aren shifted chakra downward.
Earth Style: Ground Bind.
The soil beneath Kiba's landing foot hardened instantly, locking just long enough to throw off his balance. Hinata struck—precise, controlled—shutting down a tenketsu before disengaging.
The exchange lasted less than ten seconds.
Silence followed.
Naruto blinked. "What just happened?"
Kiba growled. "They cheated."
"They coordinated," Kakashi corrected mildly.
The system pulsed.
[Multi-Opponent Scenario: Successful]
[Decision Efficiency: High]
[Chakra Expenditure: Within Limits]
Ino opened her eyes.
She looked directly at Aren.
Not impressed.
Satisfied.
Later, roles rotated.
Aren faced Neji next—solo.
No theatrics.
Just pressure.
Neji advanced calmly, Byakugan active, seeing everything.
"You rely on setup," Neji said. "Against someone who sees through it, that's a liability."
"Agreed," Aren replied.
Neji struck.
Fast.
Aren didn't retreat. He reinforced his body—short bursts, not sustained enhancement—absorbing glancing blows while redirecting positioning rather than force.
The system worked furiously.
[Body Reinforcement: Burst-Type Optimization in Progress]
Neji's palm came in—
Aren stepped inside the strike, released a low-pressure wind burst upward, and disengaged.
Neji stopped.
Slowly lowered his hands.
"…You're minimizing contact," Neji said.
"Yes."
"For endurance."
"For survival."
Neji nodded once. "That will matter."
The system finalized the update.
[Technique Adjustment Complete]
• Body Reinforcement – Burst Type
Effect: Short-duration chakra reinforcement optimized for impact mitigation
Limitation: Not sustainable in extended exchanges
By midday, fatigue began to creep in.
That was when mistakes happened.
Sakura faltered during a sequence. Naruto overextended. Even Sasuke misjudged timing once and cursed under his breath.
Aren noticed all of it.
So did Ino.
She approached him quietly during a break, handing him a canteen.
"You're starting to overcorrect again," she said.
"I am?"
She nodded. "Your chakra spikes every time someone messes up around you. Like you're preparing to compensate."
Aren paused.
The system chimed softly.
[Behavioral Pattern Identified: Responsibility Overextension]
[Risk: Cognitive Drain]
"…Noted," Aren said.
Ino smiled faintly. "You don't have to carry the whole field."
"I know," he replied.
But now he actually did.
That afternoon, Kakashi ended training early.
"Enough," he said. "What you've built today will matter more than another hour of exhaustion."
As the group dispersed, conversations lingered. Quiet ones. Thoughtful ones.
This wasn't rivalry anymore.
It was awareness.
Aren walked back toward the village with Ino again, neither rushing.
"The exams will be messy," she said eventually.
"Yes."
"You're ready," she added. "Not to win. To adapt."
That distinction mattered.
The system agreed.
[Perspective Alignment: Optimal]
[Exam Readiness: Advancing]
As they parted ways, Aren felt the pressure differently now.
Not as weight.
But as shape.
Something forming under stress.
Something deliberate.
The gates were close.
And this time, he wouldn't enter them undefined.
