Colin unleashed his strength once more. Javelins flew from his hands in rapid succession, each one piercing cleanly through one or even several flying ants before they dropped from the sky.
At the same time, other ability users in the team began activating their powers or opening up with firearms, hammering the swarm of diving ants.
But there were simply too many of them. Stopping the assault in any short amount of time was impossible.
Then something unexpected happened.
Several ability users worked together and conjured a rugged off-road vehicle right on the spot. The massive machine was covered in a thick layer of Nen. Even when flying ants slammed into it, the impacts barely registered.
Once everyone piled inside, Colin stopped throwing javelins. His weapons weren't conjured constructs—they were real steel he'd brought with him. Even with teammates carrying extras, he couldn't afford to waste them on fodder.
These flying ants didn't look like the final boss anyway.
The driver slammed the accelerator to the floor. The engine roared like a wild animal. In front of the charging vehicle, large soldier ants began appearing one after another.
They never stood a chance.
The off-road vehicle plowed straight through them, crushing bodies beneath its wheels. But the ants reacted fast. Instead of fleeing, they turned and aimed their abdomens at the oncoming machine. Thick white spider silk sprayed out in heavy streams, trying to web the vehicle down.
The biology expert's earlier warning had already spread through the team. Someone was ready.
Windows were shoved open. Two tall ability users leaned out, each gripping a flamethrower. After discovering how easily the underground monsters burned, flamethrowers had become standard kit. The same weapons had already proven effective against the wood-attribute creatures.
These ants had some resistance to fire, but their silk was extremely flammable.
Twin streams of blazing fire erupted. The incoming webs ignited in mid-air before they could reach the vehicle.
The off-road vehicle burst through the flames like a beast, its massive spiked front bumper turning into a deadly reaper. Ant after ant was sent flying, bodies torn open by the impact. The machine tore through the forest, smashing smaller trees aside without slowing.
Inside, the man maintaining the vehicle's powerful Nen defense was already pale and sweating. The constant ramming and high-speed maneuvering was draining his aura at a terrifying rate. In barely a minute his reserves were nearly empty. The protective layer around the vehicle began to thin.
A flying ant finally broke through with a sharp pop. Its claws screeched across the roof as it landed.
A handgun was pressed against its head almost instantly.
Bang.
The ant's skull exploded. Its corpse was flung off by the vehicle's violent jolting.
A man in sunglasses appeared on the roof, dual pistols in hand, aura already pushed into Ren. He moved across the bucking surface like it was solid ground, calmly dropping every diving ant that came close. Bodies smashed into the dirt around the speeding vehicle.
Two minutes later the sky was clear of flying ants. The soldier ants blocking the path were gone. The cave and the cliff face finally came into view.
Then the massive off-road vehicle simply vanished.
The team had been ready. They rolled with the sudden disappearance, absorbing the impact and landing on their feet. Five members immediately stepped back and dropped to the ground under the protection of the remaining three, gasping for breath. Four of them had helped conjure the vehicle. The fifth had maintained the Nen shield.
The sunglasses man was breathing hard too, but he didn't sit down. He stayed on his feet, eyes locked on the cave entrance with a grim expression. He had sensed something.
Before he could speak, a huge tail exploded out of the ground and punched straight through his chest, lifting him into the air like a rag doll.
Nearby ability users reacted instantly. Some dropped into combat stances. Others tried to create distance.
Two more people were impaled and flung skyward in the next heartbeat.
"Watch out!" Benket shouted.
At the same time, someone beside him hurled a disk at the ground. It unfolded on impact, blooming into a wide dark-green net that spread across the dirt like a trap ready to snare whatever was hiding below.
The net never finished deploying.
A massive snake head lunged from behind the man who had thrown the disk. Its jaws snapped shut. Only a pair of legs remained standing on the ground.
Fear flashed across Benket's face, but his hands moved fast. He threw a small spherical device. It hit the dirt with a soft pop and exploded into a thick cloud of smoke that swallowed his figure completely.
The giant snake turned its head toward the smoke, confusion flickering in its cold eyes. One of its tails vanished into the ground and reappeared inside the cloud—striking nothing.
At that exact moment a javelin came screaming in from the side. It slammed into the snake's head before the creature could react. Scales and Nen shattered on impact, but the weapon didn't penetrate far. It lodged in the muscle beneath the scales.
"Explode," Colin muttered.
The embedded javelin detonated like a bomb. The snake's head jerked as flesh and blood sprayed outward. The explosion seemed to enrage the creature that had kept most of its body hidden underground.
It roared. The ground began to shake violently, as if something enormous was trying to claw its way out of the earth.
Everyone's faces went pale. Colin yanked out another javelin, but his expression was grim. One more shot wouldn't be enough to finish this thing.
Then a spinning sphere of blue energy came screaming out of the distant treeline, carving a path straight toward the snake's head.
Boom.
The sphere collided with the giant skull in a violent explosion of wind blades. The Rasenshuriken expanded instantly, wrapping the entire head in churning blue chakra. The ground stopped shaking. The massive tail went limp and crashed to the earth.
Ronin stepped out from the edge of the forest, aura still crackling around his hand.
He had arrived.
