The moment seemed to stretch for a few seconds, but I didn't touch her. My hand hovered in the air, just inches from Gogi's face. It wasn't because I couldn't hit her, it was because I realized she wasn't worth the effort. A small smile crept onto my lips, and then I started laughing a dry, sharp sound that echoed through the stillness of the room.
Gogi slowly opened her eyes, confused and shocked when the slap never came. She looked at me, her eyes vacant and puzzled, unable to understand what was happening. My laughter grew louder, reverberating in the quiet room, as if I'd found a dark, ironic humor in something only I could understand. My shoulders shook with each laugh, and I couldn't hold it in any longer. The laughter bubbled up from deep inside my chest, full of contempt and mockery.
