Some howls are not a call. They are a verdict.
I've heard a lot of howls in my life. Pack howls, territory howls, the celebratory ones that go up after a hunt, the mourning ones that don't sound like anything else in the world. I grew up surrounded by wolf sound and I learned early how to read the difference between them the way you learn to read weather — by exposure and attention and enough time watching what follows each one.
This is not any of those.
