The fog was settling in at the Tower of Westeros, which made spotting difficult. But the spotting went on without a break. The spotter turned the spy eye towards the north to make another sweep, and something caught his eye. There in the fog, 100 miles away to the north, he saw a Zon flag go by, and then another. They were heading towards the Frozen Shore when he set off the alarm. His swamp-kin telepath sent out the word everywhere. Bran was awake and heard the telepaths' mental alarm. He sent the warning through the three-eyed raven to Tormund instantly.
Arya called a meeting and sent warnings to Bear Island to be ready if the raiding party came south. Ming and Tse spit-balled the idea that this was an early attack by the Zon's arctic forces. Sent to create a force north of the defenses. They would take the northern regions in a blitz attack and then wait for the spring invasion to sneak south to disrupt resistance. They guessed the fleet had 20-30 ships in it, with some ice breakers. The two of them doubted the full invasion was here yet, but couldn't be sure.
Arya called for deployment of six ships, including the ice breaker, to catch the Zon fleet unawares from behind. They would leave in the morning and were to destroy as much of the enemy fleet as they could. They should not put themselves at risk though as they were needed for the full invasion. "Time to start killing Zon again!" Arya said. Crews scrambled to get gear and ammunition loaded onto the six ships and were ready to sail by daylight. The ship The Black Hand broke the ice in the bay and led them out.
North of the wall Tormund counseled meeting the enemy at Skirling Pass. From there they could fall back in skirmish mode until they reached the wall. The King's forces on the wall would serve as a pincer force to wield against the enemy. Messages were sent out by the 7 clan leaders to all meet at the pass and they gathered as many fighters as they could to head out. Logistic support in food and weaponry would meet them at the pass later. Tormund warned them that the Zon were fierce fighters and had many magical weapons and casters among their ranks.
On the Frozen Shore the Great Walrus watched as this new enemy was beginning to unload troops. They were huge and clearly not men from south of the wall. He had sent riders to warn the villages to the north, telling them all to meet at the pass through the mountains, because it was the most defensible point. He assumed any friendly fighters would head to that location as well. He watched as the villagers on their sleds diapered from view to the east, and then turned to follow them. There was no sense in sacrificing his few men in a foolish attempt to stall this massive force unloading. "Let them come and discover how Wildling's fight," he said to himself.
The Zon force unloaded their wind sleds and their gear, moving to the the village close by. Spotters had seen the villagers retreating so they burned everything but the largest building which they set up as storage for the goods that they were still unloading. 10,000 crack arctic troops had been unloaded and the first teams were heading out, east and north. They would track the villagers to see where they went and begin reconnoitering enemy troops. The main force would follow with slings and troops when resistance was encountered.
Portsmith was on his catamaran the Kaiya, he was a ways ahead of the other ships because his ship was so fast. The Kaiya was going to be the bait to draw off any ships defending the retreat lanes for the Zonian troops. His telepath sent word to the other ships that they spotted six ships where the ice breakers had started clearing paths for the troops ships. There were the two ice breakers and four other ships. Two of the other ships were smaller and faster. The Kaiya swept out of the fog and began firing at the stationary ships. Two shots hit and set fire to one of the ice breakers, one shot hit one of the larger four ships. The two smaller ships spun around quickly and chased after the Kaiya. The Zon wanted no witnesses to inform others that this early invasion had started. As the Kaiya vanished into a scattering fog bank the two smaller vessels dipped in behind her. After they reached a break in the fog Portsmith shouted "All stop!" They drifted forward just into another wisp of fog. As the two enemy ships hit the clearing the Kaiya opened up fire from it's guns, sinking one of the smaller ships instantly. They spun and engaged the other smaller ship as his mostly Amanian crew swarmed over the gunnels. It was a quick fight and the captain of the remaining Zon ship was captured quickly as well. A skeleton crew would sail that ship back to Brandon's Rest to be studied and for the prisoners to be interrogated.
As the Kaiya's guns went off the rest of the fleet from Brandon's Rest popped out of a fog bank and opened fire on the 4 remaining Zon ships. One of the shots went wide and struck a hidden ship, the magic faded and they could see a mage ship with sling appear. They sunk it before the sling could fire and they destroyed the other 4 ships as well.
