Chapter 12 - Chapter 12: Under the Tree

Elena skipped her afternoon class the day after orientation.

She told herself it was fine. The professor said the first week was mostly review anyway. She could catch up later.

She woke up late, hair a mess, no makeup. Threw on the gray hoodie with the coffee stain on the sleeve. Slacks and sneakers. Backpack with the sketchpad and nothing else.

She left through the side door, hood up, head down. The hallway was quiet. No one asked where she was going.

She walked past the main quad where yesterday's chaos had already moved on. She took the back path behind the library, the one with old trees and no people.

She found the spot she saw from her window. A big oak tree, wide branches, grass soft underneath. She dropped down on the ground, back against the trunk, legs stretched out in front of her.

The sun came through the leaves in little patches. She pulled out the sketchpad and opened it to a blank page.

She started drawing the landscape in front of her. The path curving away, a bench sitting empty in the distance, leaves scattered on the grass.

She was lost in it when she noticed someone walking the path.

A guy. Hoodie up, backpack low, steps quick like he was late. He moved like he knew exactly where he was going. No looking around. No hesitation. Just forward, focused.

Elena watched him without thinking.

He passed the bench, hands in pockets, shoulders straight like the world was heavy but he refused to let it drop.

She lifted her pencil and added him to the sketch.

Just the shape of him. The way he walked. The way he fit into the landscape like he belonged there.

She didn't know his name.

She didn't need to.

She kept drawing until he disappeared around the bend.

The page looked different now.

Before he was there it was just a quiet scene.

Now it felt alive.

She didn't move.

She stayed right there under the tree.

Hours passed.

The sun climbed higher, then started to drop. The light turned golden. Shadows got longer. The air got cooler. A few people walked by but none stopped. No one looked her way.

She didn't care.

She kept sketching. Added more leaves. The bench again. A bird that landed nearby. The way the path curved into nothing.

She drew until her hand felt stiff and the pad was full of little details she hadn't planned.

She closed it slowly.

She leaned back against the tree and closed her eyes.

The wind moved the branches above her.

She stayed until the sun was almost gone.

No one came looking.

No one needed to.

She was alone.

And for once alone felt like enough.

She stood up slow, brushed grass off her slacks, and started walking back.

The campus looked different in the evening light.

Quieter.

She didn't rush.

She just walked.

And the tree stayed behind her.

Waiting for tomorrow.
