The night was deep.
Taiichi left the side hall without staying at the mansion. Using one of his Flying Thunder God markers, he appeared instantly on the roof of an unremarkable house in the capital of the Land of Hot Water.
He sat cross-legged and formed a hand seal.
Shadow Clone Jutsu.
Several puffs of white smoke burst in succession.
Eight perfect copies of Taiichi appeared around him.
He spread the map open and pointed to the marked locations.
"One of you takes each major disappearance site and the surrounding area. Carefully scan for residual chakra and look for any clues. Pay special attention to underground spaces or hidden caves.
I'll handle the newest report—Moonview Village. If you find anything abnormal, dispel immediately. Stay hidden. Don't alert anyone."
Taiichi's orders were concise.
"Understood!" the eight clones answered in unison. They turned into eight blurry shadows and vanished into the night, racing in different directions.
Taiichi's main body spread his Wind Release chakra wings and glided silently northward.
---
After the banquet, when Taiichi followed the Crown Prince to the side hall, the Second Prince's refined mask had already shattered the moment he stepped into his own residence. His face turned dark and stormy.
He waved off the maids who came to greet him and strode heavily toward his study, each step like he was walking on burning coals.
Bang!
The heavy study door slammed shut, cutting off the outside world. The Second Prince irritably tore open his luxurious collar, as if the fine fabric was choking him.
He grabbed a large cup of cold sake and downed it in one go. The spicy liquid burned down his throat but did nothing to extinguish the anger raging in his chest.
"Konoha… the White Reaper, Matsushita Taiichi!"
He ground the words out through clenched teeth, his fingers tightening around the cup until his knuckles turned white.
That black-haired youth's calm gaze at the banquet had felt like it could pierce straight through every layer of pretense. It sent a chill down his spine, like being stared at by a venomous snake.
Even someone like him, a noble, had heard of Taiichi's extraordinary reputation across the shinobi world. Having a person like that show up was like a bucket of ice water poured over a plan he had believed was flawless.
"Damn it! Why him? And why so fast?!"
He had assumed Konoha would send an experienced elite jonin at most—someone he would have plenty of time and methods to deal with, mislead, or even eliminate.
But the White Reaper? This was a man whose name had been forged in mountains of corpses and rivers of blood. Even more terrifying was how quickly he had arrived, which meant his information network and reaction time had been compressed to the absolute limit.
"Someone!" the Second Prince growled, his voice low and dangerous as he suppressed his rage.
Almost the instant the words left his mouth, a figure completely wrapped in black, with only a pair of emotionless eyes visible, appeared in the shadows of the study corner and dropped to one knee. "Master."
"Go to the Crow's Nest," the Second Prince ordered, his voice icy. "Tell that mad cult leader that Konoha's White Reaper, Matsushita Taiichi, has arrived. Tell them to immediately—right now—pull in every loose end! Stop all activities. Not even a single rat is to be touched. Seal the testing grounds completely and erase every trace! If that calamity catches even a whiff of this, they can wait for the entire Jashin cult to be buried alongside those peasants!"
The black-clad man's body tensed almost imperceptibly. Even he felt the pressure from the title "White Reaper."
"Yes!"
"And one more thing." The Second Prince suddenly turned around, madness and impatience flashing in his eyes. "Ask him—how far has the experiment progressed?! We've poured in so much money and captured so many people, yet they still can't produce a single decent 'finished product'?! I want an immortal army that can sweep everything away, not a bunch of useless trash that dies after a few extra cuts! Tell him my patience has limits! If he still can't deliver results when I need them—"
A ruthless glint flashed in Shinkai's eyes. "He knows what the consequences will be!"
"Understood!" the black-clad man replied again. His figure flickered like ink melting into shadow and disappeared without a sound.
The study fell into dead silence once more, broken only by the Second Prince's heavy breathing.
He paced irritably, replaying in his mind Taiichi's calm yet razor-sharp gaze at the banquet and the Crown Prince's overly eager, almost desperate attitude in front of him.
"Hmph. My dear elder brother…" A twisted, cold smile pulled at the corner of the Second Prince's mouth. "You think latching onto Konoha's thigh will let you rest easy and inherit everything smoothly? How naive! That senile old man—why should he give everything to you? Just because you're the eldest?
This country needs power! Power strong enough to deter the entire world! Not your fake benevolence and righteousness!"
He suddenly smashed the cup onto the floor. The expensive porcelain shattered into pieces, sake splashing everywhere.
"The Jashin cult… a bunch of lunatics! Worthless trash!" he muttered through gritted teeth. The memory of the cultists' frenzied sacrifices and bloody methods made his stomach churn.
If he weren't coveting that "immortal" power, why would the Second Prince of the Land of Hot Water ever lower himself to work with these filthy maggots?
What made it even worse was that these lunatics had no concept of subtlety. They didn't just kidnap people—they made entire villages disappear, drawing attention from the daimyo's mansion and ultimately summoning this tiger from Konoha.
"A bunch of brainless idiots!"
---
The night was pitch black.
Taiichi's main body hovered above Moonview Village. The cold night wind brushed through his hair.
Below, the once-lively village was now deathly silent. Houses cast twisted shadows under the dim moonlight, like giant tombstones.
"As expected…"
Taiichi closed his eyes. His chakra perception spread like an invisible tide, carefully sweeping across every inch of land and every house in the village.
The signs of struggle where villagers had been forcibly taken, the drag marks, the broken doors and windows—all of it had been deliberately destroyed to look chaotic and disorganized.
But to Taiichi's sharp senses, the residual chakra traces left by the perpetrators—though also tampered with—could not be completely hidden. They stood out like fireflies in the dark.
It was a violent, evil chakra, thick with the stench of blood and malice. The kind that left a deep impression.
He slowly descended and carefully examined the remaining traces on the ground, especially in the areas that had been damaged the most, trying to reconstruct what had happened.
At the same time, Taiichi's shadow clones scattered across the other disappearance sites in the Land of Hot Water encountered similar situations.
Every scene had been heavily tampered with. Clues were scarce, and the residual traces of that violent, evil chakra were so faint they were nearly impossible to detect.
The enemy clearly had considerable experience in "cleaning up" after themselves—or they had dedicated "cleaners" who handled the traces.
Time passed in silent searching.
Taiichi's main body repeatedly scanned the area around Moonview Village, expanding the search radius and even probing underground. He found nothing. The enemy seemed to have appeared out of nowhere and vanished just as completely, leaving no clear trail back to their base.
---
The next morning, just as the sky began to lighten.
Taiichi was resting in a grove on the outskirts of Moonview Village when information from one of his dispelled shadow clones flooded into his mind.
New disappearance report!
Location: A mountain trade route roughly a hundred miles southeast of the capital. A merchant caravan transporting hot spring specialties, along with their guards—twelve people in total—had gone missing last night.
Without hesitation, Taiichi formed his chakra wings and shot forward as a streak of blue light, tearing through the morning mist at incredible speed toward the scene.
In just over fifteen minutes, he arrived.
Officials from the Land of Hot Water were already "investigating" the site. Several men in samurai attire and low-level ninja gear were gathered around several overturned carts. A middle-aged man who looked like a squad leader was frowning as he directed his subordinates to take notes.
When they saw Taiichi descend from the sky, everyone was startled. Once they recognized who he was, their attitudes became respectful but visibly tense.
"Lord Taiichi! You're here!" the squad leader hurried over, his face wearing a professional mix of grief and helplessness.
"We came after receiving reports from nearby travelers. From what we can see so far, it's another disappearance case. Same as the previous ones—signs of a fight, goods scattered, but… no bodies or valuable clues found. These damn bandits…"
Taiichi nodded slightly. His gaze was sharp as a hawk as he swept across the scene. The carts were in disarray, goods strewn everywhere. There were clear drag marks and messy footprints on the ground. Several patches of soil looked freshly turned over.
On the surface, it really did look like a bandit ambush—people taken, some goods looted.
"Hard work," Taiichi said flatly.
He walked to the area with the most concentrated traces, crouched down, and touched the ground with two fingers. Chakra rippled outward. His perception instantly pierced through the surface chaos.
Something's wrong.
The direction and force of those drag marks were too deliberate. It was as if they were meant to cover up deeper traces underneath.
The freshly turned soil had slight differences in moisture and color compared to the surrounding ground. This was the result of two separate cleanups at different times.
"Did you clean up the scene?" Taiichi stood up and looked calmly at the squad leader. His tone gave nothing away.
The man clearly froze for a second. A flicker of confusion crossed his face before he instinctively shook his head, only for it to be replaced by deeper helplessness.
"Your insight is sharp, my lord. The scene was already like this when we arrived. It might have rained lightly last night, or the criminals deliberately destroyed the evidence… We're limited in what we can do. We really couldn't find more clues."
He spread his hands, looking completely innocent.
Taiichi couldn't detect anything obviously wrong with the squad leader's reaction—it seemed normal enough. He didn't press further. His gaze casually swept over the man and the subordinates behind him.
Who was it? Was it someone under this squad leader? Or someone else? Someone had tampered with the scene after the incident.
Among these "investigators," there was definitely at least one person with a problem. Anyone with experience could see the suspicious points here, yet none of them had reported anything. Either they were directly involved in tampering with the evidence, or they knew the truth and were afraid of Taiichi discovering it.
"Understood," Taiichi said without exposing anything. He simply nodded as if accepting the explanation. "The scene is indeed heavily damaged. I'll take a closer look myself. You can continue with your recording work."
He stopped paying attention to them and focused more intently on examining the deliberately tampered areas—especially beneath those patches of freshly turned soil—using his chakra perception to carefully scan for any remaining underground traces.
It was fortunate he had arrived early. If he had been any later, even these faint traces would have naturally dissipated into the environment.
Taiichi stood up. In his mind, he traced the direction the marks pointed toward—the northeastern mountain region. The terrain there was complex, filled with hot spring caves. It would make an excellent hiding place.
He memorized the information but didn't share it with the squad leader. The officials were no longer trustworthy in his eyes.
---
At the same time, in a remote corner of the Land of Hot Water, deep within an underground cavern, lay the main base of the Jashin cult.
Flickering candlelight cast distorted, grotesque shadows of the Jashin reliefs carved into the walls, as if demons were dancing wildly. The air was thick with the heavy stench of blood, medicinal herbs, and an indescribable rot.
The altar was covered in layer upon layer of dried, dark-red bloodstains, each one telling the story of lives that had been extinguished.
The Jashin cult's leader, "Blood Raven," sat cross-legged on a throne carved from a massive boulder, listening to the black-clad subordinate sent by the Second Prince deliver his orders.
He wore a crimson robe, and a wooden mask carved with crow patterns covered his face, revealing only a pair of eyes that glowed with fanatical, cruel red light in the darkness.
"Stop all activities? Lie low?" Blood Raven's voice was hoarse and unpleasant, like sandpaper grinding against bone, thick with mockery. "Heh. Our noble Second Prince—has he been scared out of his wits by that Konoha brat?"
The black-clad man's heart tightened. He forced himself to speak. "Blood Raven, mind your words. The Second Prince gave strict orders. The Konoha shinobi who arrived this time is no ordinary person. He is the White Reaper, Matsushita Taiichi. His strength is unfathomable. For the sake of the greater plan, please—"
"Greater plan?" Blood Raven suddenly cut him off, his voice rising sharply with madness. "What do you know about the greater plan?! The descent of my Lord is the only true greater plan! Sacrifices! We need more sacrifices to commune with the supreme and great Jashin and receive true immortal power!"
He suddenly stood up. His crimson robe billowed without wind. A cold, violent aura instantly filled the entire hall, making the black-clad man feel like he had fallen into an ice cave. Breathing became difficult.
"Those defective products—those failed immortals—are nothing more than flawed rejects because mortal flesh cannot withstand divine grace! But as long as we continue offering sacrifices, as long as we commune with more of my Lord's power, true immortal warriors will eventually be born.
That will be a great power capable of overturning this rotten world!"
He looked down at the black-clad man from above. His eyes behind the mask flashed with extreme contempt for the Second Prince's orders. "Go back and tell the Second Prince that I have received his warning. For the sake of our 'cooperation,' we will temporarily… lie low.
However, the progress of the experiment depends on the quantity and quality of the sacrifices! The will of my Lord is not something a mere mortal can rush! Tell him to handle his own affairs properly. The money and cover—neither can be reduced!"
The black-clad man felt the inhuman, terrifying aura radiating from Blood Raven and didn't dare say another word. He could only lower his head and reply, "Understood… I will pass on your words."
He was secretly cursing inside. The Second Prince and this mad cult leader were both equally difficult to serve.
Blood Raven snorted coldly and waved his hand as if swatting away a fly. The black-clad man fled as if granted amnesty and quickly disappeared into the shadows.
Once he was gone, a cultist wearing a gray robe with strange symbols tattooed on his face cautiously stepped forward. "Cult Leader, we're running low on sacrifices. Do we really have to stop capturing people?"
Slap!
A resounding slap struck the gray-robed cultist across the face, sending him stumbling. Half his face instantly swelled red.
"Idiot!" Blood Raven's voice was filled with fury. "The White Reaper from Konoha is already right under our noses and you're still asking what to do?! Of course we lie low for now! Call back all those clumsy fools outside!
For the next few days, if anyone dares to go out and capture people on their own and ruin my plans, I'll sacrifice them alive to my Lord as a snack!"
The gray-robed cultist covered his face, nodding frantically in terror. "Yes! Yes! Cult Leader is wise! This subordinate will handle it immediately!"
Blood Raven watched his subordinate scramble out to deliver the orders, his face twisting beneath the mask.
Of course he knew how terrifying the White Reaper was. He was Konoha's most dazzling rising star in recent years, with an impressive record. Blood Raven wasn't stupid enough to lose his head at a critical moment like this.
But he believed even more strongly in Jashin's power! As long as he was given time, as long as he offered enough sacrifices—he would obtain power that transcended the mortal realm!
When that time came, Konoha, the White Reaper—everything would tremble beneath Jashin's feet!
As for that self-important fool, the Second Prince, he was nothing more than a stepping stone to be used and discarded.
Once Blood Raven obtained that power, the first person he would settle accounts with would be this so-called "partner" who dared to order him around like a servant!
"White Reaper… hmph. I'll let you live a few more days. When my Lord descends, your soul will be the sweetest sacrifice offered to Jashin!"
Blood Raven stared at the twisted Jashin statue on the altar, his eyes burning with mad, greedy flames.
