Immediately after school, Kato rushed home to get ready for his date.
His mother after hearing that he had asked a girl out on a date helped him pick out an outfit and gave him numerous advice on discipline and how to make her happy.
Korra: Make sure you get her flowers on your way to her house.
Kato: Yeah mom. I will.
Korra: And make sure you tell her she looks beautiful. Women like that sort of thing.
Kato: Yeah mom.
Korra: (grabs a comb and begins to comb Kato's blonde hair) Just making sure you look good.
Kato: Alright mom.
Korra: And you know that you must have self control. You know about....
Kato: MOM!
Korra: I was just saying it just in case. Who knows what kids your age are up to.
Kato: I have to go now or I'll be late.
Korra: Alright, I'll let you go (grabs Kato's arm) right after you take the trash to the back.
Kato: (sighs) Right Right.
Kato picked up the trash bag near the kitchen counter and moves towards the backdoor where the huge trash bins sat in his backyard. As Kato turned and reentered the house, two insects followed him in.
One attached itself to his arm, while the other went to his mother, Korra.
As he walked back into the kitchen, the insect bit his hand, but he quickly smacked it off his hand and it fell to the floor, dead.
He immediately then grabbed his phone and was about to make a call.
Kato: Okay mom. I'm heading out now.
Korra: Okay dear. Enjoy yourself....
She suddenly slapped her neck as the insect which had attached itself to her had bitten her.
Korea suddenly began to feel dizzy and her knees buckled as she fell.
Kato: (notices) Mom? What's wrong?! MOM!!!
Kato ran to his mother's side and noticed that her neck had begun to have these black vains coming of the bite mark on her neck.
Korra: (groans in pain)
Kato: Mom? What's wrong?? What's happening to you?!
Korra: (groans in pain)
Kato: Mom!!
Kato picked up his phone and called "911" and told them that his mother had collapsed. After giving them his house address he hung up the phone and turned only to see a figure that he didn't know crouching next to his mother who lay on the floor.
Kato: WHO'S THERE?! WHO ARE Y—
And the next thing he knew, someone hit him on the head from behind him and everything went black.

Gaki: Yeah....YOU AIN'T HUMAN ANYMORE.
Suddenly remembering the events that brought him to his exact moment, Kato still found it hard to believe what he was just told.
Kato: It's a lie. It's all a lie. YOU'RE LYING!!!
Gaki stood up and the gestured to one of the men who brought a knife. Seeing this, Kato began to shake furiously but the chains binding him to the chair didn't make things easier.
Gaki walked close to Kato and grabbed his shirt and used the knife to cut through the shirt, tearing it into two. Then at the same time, another man brought in a big mirror and place it in front of Kato.
And what Kato saw horrified him.
He had a dark like pattern tattoo stretched all over his chest area and moved to his arms and stopped there. Then as he looked closer, he realized that his ears were not pointed compared to the way they usually were.
Gaki: Now do you see it?
Kato: No.....that's not true...you guys are... This is trick. It HAS to be a trick. (pauses) Wait...what about my mother? Did she become a shadow too?
The men hearing tried their best to hold back their laughter except for Gaki who didn't laugh at all.
Gaki: Your mom? No she didn't. She's been put in a coma. I thought that she would be compatible too but I guess this compatibility comes from your dad and not her. Anyway what I'm saying is that she wasn't compatible with shadow energy and SHE'S GOING TO DIE. But that's too bad. She really had a pretty face.
Kato felt the world around him swirl.
Kato: What? Where is she?!
Gaki: We left her behind. Besides, the HFA stormed your house after we left. And-
Gaki stopped once he noticed the flood of tears falling from Kato's eyes.
Kato: My mother is going to die??....
Gaki: (sighs) I told already didn't I? She's lucky she didn't turn into a shadow monster immediately after being bitten.
Kato: But why me?...I WAS LIVING A NORMAL LIFE BEFORE YOU SHOWED UP!!!!! WHY ME????!!!!!!!!!
Gaki punched Kato in the face so hard that it caught everyone else in the room off guard.
Gaki: Sorry to break it to you but the world doesn't work according to your desires. You probably looked at all shadows as monsters all your life and wanted to live a normal life huh? Well now YOU'RE ONE OF US NOW AND THERE'S NOTHING YOU CAN DO ABOUT IT.
Gaki then turned to the other three men there with him.
Gaki: Lock him up. Zero will decide what to do with him later.
The three men moved and carried Kato who is still chained at his hands and feet and they lock him in a room where he wouldn't be able to escape.

Meanwhile back at Kato's house, the HFA had responded to Kato's phone call and when they got to his house, they only met his passed out mother on the kitchen floor.
An ambulance was called and she was taken to the hospital.
The HFA began investigating the house and found Kato's phone with fourteen missed calls from Mira and Takimo who left a message wishing him luck on his date.
Unable to find him after a thorough search around the neighborhood, the next day, the HFA announced Kato Hamura as a missing person.
