Chapter 4 - CHAPTER FOUR: LATE TEXTS AND QUIET THOUGHTS

BUKKY POV

Today seemed to go in haste — that kind of day where the world keeps moving fast, but you feel like you're standing still.

I heard my cousin, who's four years younger than me, is getting married in three months. I'm happy for him, really. He's of age, he's stable, he's got the money, family support, and even his own house. He's ready.

The drive back home was slow. I stopped by the mall beside Total Filling Station to get some cosmetics and perfume. When I parked my car, I could hear people laughing — the kind of laughter that makes you wish you were part of the joke.

I locked the car and walked gently into the house. From the living room, I could

already hear my parents talking and laughing together.

Thank God they've resolved their issue, I thought.

"Good evening, Mum. Evening, Dad," I greeted, already heading upstairs, not waiting for their replies.

"My baby, you're back!" Mum squealed.

"Welcome," Dad added, smiling.

"Yeah, thanks," I said softly and disappeared up the stairs as they continued their God-knows-what conversation.

I dropped my keys and handbag on the dresser and went straight to the restroom.

Dinner wasn't as lively as usual. My parents chatted quietly with each other, Toke was glued to her phone, and I just sat there eating in silence.

After night prayers, I stayed up in my room, pretending to work on my PC — but honestly, I was just waiting.

Waiting for him.

The clock ticked past ten. My phone screen glowed faintly beside the laptop. I finally gave in and texted:

"Hey, how was your day?"

Three minutes later, my phone buzzed.

Akanni: "I'm good, you? I'm driving. Will text when I'm home."

A small smile crept to my face.

Me: "Sure. Good too. Waiting up then."

I paused, staring at the screen, watching the "online" disappear beside his name.

The room was silent . I leaned back, hugging my pillow, trying not to think too much. I told myself I wasn't expecting anything. I told myself I'd sleep soon.

But deep down, I knew I was lying, because sometimes, it's not the text you're waiting for. It's the person behind it.

By now I leaned back in my chair, yawning. My eyes felt heavy, but my mind refused to shut down. I checked the clock again. 10:43 p.m, Still nothing.

Maybe he'd forgotten. Or maybe he was just too tired to text. I told myself it didn't matter, but my heart said otherwise.

I sighed and dropped my phone on the bed, then lay back, scrolling through TikTok to distract myself. Just then, my phone buzzed.

Akanni: "Home now. Just saw your text again. You still awake?"

I smiled before I could stop myself.

Me: "Yeah. Can't sleep."

A few seconds later, his typing bubble appeared.

Akanni: "That makes two of us. Long day, lots of noise. Needed some quiet."

Me: "I get that. I had one of those days too."

Akanni: "You still up?" he asked after some minutes

Me: "Yeah. Just thinking."

Akanni: "About?"

I hesitated. Then typed —

Me: "Life, work, everything… and maybe the strange radio guy my sister embarrassed me with."

He sent a laughing emoji.

Akanni: "😂 You mean me?"

Me: "Exactly you." Akanni: "Then I guess I should apologize for invading your birthday."

Me: "No, it was… actually nice, 😂 " I said, smiling. "It's just that I finally got the chance to chat with Mr. Hottest of Fresh FM."

Akanni: "You must be kidding me."

Me: "No, I actually mean it."

Akanni: "Oh, okay—so you wanna talk about yourself?"

Me: I hesitated before replying. "Sure. What did you want to know about the lady?" I asked sarcastically.

Akanni: "Everything. Your name, business, and more… you know."

Me: "Okay. You already know my name—Bukky," I sent.

Akanni: "Yeah, go on."

Me: "Bukky. Heading one of my father's companies as the CEO, Lucas Company. I love to dance a lot, fair in complexion, 5.7 tall, slender, and single at 27—you know that already." I hit send and waited for his response.

Akanni: "Wow, boss lady. That's great, 😂😂 " he replied.

Me: I sent a laughing emoji. "😂 Wow, why boss lady?" I asked.

Akanni: "I actually love that, y'know—the vibes," he replied.

Me: "Oh? Your turn—the introduction."

Akanni: "Yeah, sure, I'll do that. Akanni—name, yeah. Studio manager at Fresh FM. Play baseball, love to research. Would turn 29, December. Also single, for reasons."

Me: "Oh, that's nice," I sent. "Nice meeting you."

Akanni: "Yeah, you too."

We chatted until two minutes to midnight, then retired to bed.
