The operating room was quiet except for the low hum of machines.
"What is your name?"
Dax looked straight into her eyes. They were beautiful—deep, golden-flecked, almost exactly like Micah's—but dulled by pain and exhaustion. Unshed tears shimmered under the weak glow coming from her own body.
"Nadia." Her voice came out ghastly, barely a whisper. Tears started rolling down her burnt cheeks, cutting clean lines through the cracked, blackened skin.
"Good girl. Don't cry. I will fix you." His voice stayed soft and steady, almost tender.
Before I give you my blood, you will go through a brief genetic modification so this will never happen again.
Dax paused, letting the words hang in the silence of the room.
"I'm not after your body or soul. I just ask that after you're fixed, you allow me to observe your changes."
He gave her a small, calm smile—reassuring.
