Chapter 21 - Chapter 20 – The System’s First Trial

The morning sun spilled over the Riverstone Regional Academy, illuminating the polished stone paths and the rows of cultivation terraces where students practiced their techniques. For most, it was a routine day of training and study. For Lin Wei, it was anything but routine.

He had been practicing in the eastern courtyard, focusing on subtle Qi refinement, when the system suddenly flickered at the edge of his consciousness.

[Emergency Mission Detected.]

[Reward: Unknown.]

[Risk Level: Medium to High.]

Lin Wei's eyes narrowed slightly. Emergency missions were always unexpected. They could be small or deadly, depending entirely on the system's judgment of urgency and his own capabilities. Unlike normal rewards, failure carried consequences—sometimes severe.

"Medium to high," he murmured. "Interesting."

The interface displayed a brief description:

Mission: Retrieve a rare herb from the Whispering Ravine.

Conditions: Must remain undetected by local beasts and rival disciples.

Time Limit: 48 hours.

Penalty for Failure: Energy suppression for 24 hours, unable to use purification or advanced techniques.

Lin Wei didn't flinch. The mission was dangerous but manageable. His first thought, as always, was strategy: observation, patience, and controlled application of Qi.

He prepared quietly, slipping a small satchel with basic supplies and leaving the main academy paths behind. Few noticed his departure; the early morning exercises kept the outer disciples busy. Chen Yu, usually keen to follow, caught only a glimpse of Lin Wei's calm retreat before he vanished into the misty foothills surrounding the academy.

The Whispering Ravine was a known location, dangerous for those unprepared. Its dense trees and shifting shadows made it a favored site for training advanced students—but it was also home to wild Qi-infused beasts and rival disciples sent to test boundaries. Lin Wei moved with care, letting his senses extend like fine threads, noting every shift in energy, every faint movement.

As he approached the ravine's entrance, the system interface activated more fully:

[Hidden Threat Detection: Active.]

[Potential Beast Encounters: 2–5.]

[Environmental Hazards: High.]

Lin Wei adjusted his pace, allowing a subtle stream of purified Qi to circulate outward. Not enough to reveal himself, just enough to sense the surroundings. The ravine was alive with energy, faint whispers of unrefined Qi drifting through the trees, marking the presence of creatures and rival forces alike.

Hours passed as he moved deeper into the forest, careful and deliberate. Small Qi disturbances flickered in the shadows—nothing too threatening, but enough to remind him that caution was necessary. He approached a cluster of rare herbs growing along a rocky outcrop, their leaves shimmering faintly in the early sunlight. These were the Whispering Night Petals, known for their potent purification properties.

Lin Wei knelt, letting the system interface guide his extraction process subtly:

[Purification Optimization: Engaged.]

[Yield Efficiency: 92%.]

Even as he gently separated the petals, a rustle of leaves alerted him to movement. A pair of outer disciples emerged, clearly scouting the area. Their eyes widened as they noticed him.

"Lin Wei!" one of them called, stepping forward aggressively. "What are you doing here? That herb is restricted!"

Lin Wei's expression remained calm. He did not respond verbally. Instead, his Qi flowed subtly, purifying the energy of the herbs while masking his own presence. The petals pulsed faintly, the glow dimming as the disciples' senses failed to detect anything unusual.

The second disciple frowned. "I know I saw movement! He's trying to steal it!"

Lin Wei rose slowly, stepping back. He let the purified Qi ripple outward, a soft hum that only he could sense. The disciples hesitated, unable to pinpoint any disturbance. Their attention wavered, leaving Lin Wei an opening to slip away unnoticed.

Once he had put sufficient distance between himself and the would-be challengers, he exhaled lightly. The system interface displayed a brief message:

[Mission Progress: 45%.]

[Stealth Success: Optimal.]

Satisfied with his cautious approach, Lin Wei continued deeper into the ravine. By midday, he had gathered the remaining herbs without incident. His movements were precise, efficient, and entirely controlled—a perfect example of system-guided operation.

As he prepared to leave, a faint shimmer in the mist caught his eye. A small fox-like shape emerged, almost ghostly in appearance. Its fur was pure white, glimmering faintly, with deep blue eyes that seemed to recognize him. The Celestial Frost Fox Egg pulsed softly in response within his bag. Though it had not yet hatched, the egg's connection to him was becoming more tangible.

The fox watched silently for a moment, then vanished into the undergrowth, leaving a faint trace of energy in its wake. Lin Wei paused, letting the moment settle. The system interface displayed another message:

[Egg Bonding Check: Active.]

[Affinity Increase: Minor.]

He made his way back toward the academy under the protective cover of shadows and mist. Every step was deliberate. The system continued monitoring, alerting him only to subtle environmental hazards—a loose stone here, a faint ripple of energy there. The interface even suggested small optimizations in his route, improving efficiency without risking detection.

By evening, Lin Wei returned to the academy with the Whispering Night Petals intact. He placed them carefully in the herb pavilion, ensuring no one would suspect the care with which they had been harvested. Chen Yu, who had been waiting near the entrance, raised an eyebrow.

"You look… unusually composed today."

Lin Wei allowed a small, faint smile. "Just focused on training."

Lin Wei's thoughts, however, were elsewhere. The system had guided him flawlessly, but it had also hinted at something more: the next stage of growth, the first hints of interface evolution, and the subtle strengthening of the bond with the egg. He knew the next mission could come at any moment, even during normal academy life. And when it did, he would need to be ready.

That night, as he meditated under the moonlight, the system interface displayed one final message for the day:

[Emergency Mission Complete: Success.]

[Reward Pending: To Be Delivered.]

The Celestial Frost Fox Egg pulsed faintly in his bag, a soft, rhythmic thrum in tune with his heartbeat. Though it remained dormant, it was no longer inert. Small, subtle signs of growth whispered of the bond forming silently, preparing for the moment when it would awaken fully.

Lin Wei exhaled, feeling a calm resolve settle over him. The academy, rivals, and unknown threats beyond the walls—none of it mattered so long as he remained precise, patient, and prepared.

The system had tested him today. Tomorrow, it would test him again. And every time, Lin Wei would grow stronger, unseen, and unchallenged… until the time came when no one could ignore the currents he was quietly weaving around himself.
