Chapter 40 - Final Evaluation

The Academy courtyard was busier than usual that morning. The sky remained overcast, high clouds filtering the light and bathing the place in soft tones of gray and beige. The air was cool, with a gentle breeze that made the Academy's banners ripple slowly.

Ren arrived alongside the other students, blending into the almost automatic flow of footsteps and voices. Their clothes were simple but clean; freshly adjusted headbands gave away the importance of the day. His body felt awake, naturally warmed—there was no excessive tension. Constant training had made that feeling familiar.

"So it's today…" Gaku Inuzuka muttered, cracking his neck as he walked. "Finally."

"For you it looks like a festival," commented a boy from the Nara clan, yawning. "For me, it's just more work."

Masaru Uchiha walked a few steps ahead, silent, his expression closed. When he noticed Ren approaching, he shot him a quick, appraising glance.

"You're not going to say anything?" Gaku prodded. "After a whole year training like a madman?"

Ren shrugged.

"It's just an exam."

"He says that like it isn't the exam," another girl grumbled, adjusting her tied-back hair.

The instructors began organizing the class on the testing field. No long speeches. No grand explanations. Just simple, direct orders.

The first trial was the run.

At the signal, the group surged forward. At first, everyone kept a similar pace, driven by adrenaline. As the minutes passed, differences began to show. Breathing grew heavier. Footfalls lost their rhythm.

"Hey, Inuzuka, you're gonna die out there!" someone shouted with a laugh when Gaku started pushing too hard.

"Shut up and run!" he shot back, panting.

Ren held the same pace from the start. Steady breathing, aligned posture, an empty mind. When some began to slow down, he simply kept going. One by one, they fell behind.

"He's still running?" the Nara murmured, seated on the ground after giving up.

"Since when can he last that long?" whispered the girl beside him.

When the test ended, Ren was still standing—sweaty, but firm. The instructor only made a silent note.

Then came the throwing test.

The students lined up before the targets. Some breathed too deeply. Others adjusted their stance again and again.

"Center of the target, that's it," Gaku said, trying to sound confident. "Easy."

The sound of shuriken cutting through the air echoed across the field. Some hit. Others missed by inches.

When it was Ren's turn, he threw with ease. At the final instant, an almost imperceptible current of wind followed the metal.

"Dead center…" someone whispered.

"Again?!" Masaru complained, teeth clenched as he watched the second throw.

Ren didn't react. He simply collected the weapons when the test ended.

Combat was last.

The matches happened in sequence—some quick and technical, others chaotic. When Ren stepped into the circle, the silence was brief, but noticeable.

"Good luck," his opponent said, trying to sound confident.

The fight ended quickly.

"Already?" someone asked, surprised.

Ren stepped away, feeling only the warmth of a body in motion—nothing more.

When all the tests were over, the students were gathered again. Murmurs spread, comparisons surfaced, nervous laughter too.

"He passed way too easily," Gaku commented, arms crossed. "Annoying."

"That's called training," the Nara replied with a sigh. "A lot of training."

Without a formal announcement, the results were recorded. Ren's position was clear to everyone, even without being spoken aloud.

In the silence that followed, the system interface appeared naturally, as it always did.

Ren simply took a deep breath.

Around him, his classmates continued to argue, complain, laugh, or try to understand what had happened.

He just observed.

The exam was over.

And a new starting point opened ahead.

The air on the field seemed heavier as the trials progressed. The sound of sandals scraping against dry ground mixed with uneven breathing, while others tried to hide their fatigue behind overly straight posture. Murmurs came in short waves—quick comments cut off the moment an instructor cast a sharper look.

During the pauses, silent glances were exchanged. Some carried obvious frustration; others held back surprise upon realizing that steady effort had surpassed raw talent that day. One student wiped sweat from his brow with his sleeve, laughing awkwardly after missing another throw, drawing low comments from his peers. Nearby, someone whispered hurried encouragement, answered with a brief nod.

The instructors spoke little. They wrote. They watched adjustments in posture, recovery rhythm, the way each child handled mistakes. Ren stayed centered, feeling his body respond as expected. There was no euphoria—only the quiet confirmation that the work done throughout the year supported every movement. His confidence came from there, discreet, with no need to prove anything to anyone.
