New Bonds and First Sparks
Audrey woke to the soft golden light streaming through her lace curtains. For the first time in weeks, she felt a sense of calm wash over her. Breakfast smelled of warm bread and eggs, and Mrs. Edith bustled quietly in the kitchen.
"Good morning, dear," Mrs. Edith said, placing a small plate of toast in front of Audrey. "You've been up to Rosewood's charm too early these days. Take it slow, enjoy the town. One step at a time."
Audrey smiled, taking a bite. One step at a time, she thought, reflecting on her walk yesterday and her strange encounter with Alex. There was something comforting about him—steady, kind, and… a little teasing. She quickly shook the thought away. It was too soon.
Later that morning, Audrey met Alex outside the small café where he had promised to show her the hidden corners of Rosewood.
"Are you ready for today's adventure?" Alex asked, a playful grin on his face.
Audrey chuckled. "As long as it doesn't involve more rogue cats following me."
Alex laughed. "No guarantees. But let's try."
They wandered down quiet streets lined with cobblestones, stopping at a bookstore filled with old novels, and later at a small park with a fountain where children laughed and played. Audrey felt light—like a weight she didn't realize she'd been carrying had lifted.
At the park, a small stray dog wandered into the fountain, shaking itself and splashing water everywhere. Audrey gasped and laughed at the sight. "Oh no! Look at him!"
Alex stepped closer, holding his jacket out to protect her from the stray's splashes. "You okay?" he asked, teasing. "You look like you've never seen a dog before."
Audrey shook her head, laughing harder. "I didn't expect him to take a swim right here!"
The small moment of chaos brought them closer. Alex's eyes lingered on hers a second longer than usual. Audrey felt a flutter in her chest. Why does it feel like he sees me… really sees me?
As they walked back, Alex nudged her shoulder lightly. "You've been avoiding the real challenge all day—admitting you secretly like hanging out with me."
Audrey rolled her eyes but couldn't hide the smile. "I am not admitting anything. You're impossible."
"Hmm," Alex said, pretending to ponder. "Impossible? Or irresistible?"
Audrey laughed, shaking her head. Her heart raced slightly, and she couldn't help but notice how easy it was to be around him. Safe. Warm. Alive.
Walking home under the glow of the streetlights, Audrey thought about her life in Ashford—the betrayal, the heartbreak, the emptiness. Rosewood felt completely different. Here, she was safe. Here, she could breathe.
And Alex… he was more than a friend. She wasn't ready to admit it yet, but the thought made her chest tighten in a good way. Maybe, just maybe, she could let someone in again.
Meanwhile, back in Ashford, Alison and Brian's hollow relationship continued to crumble.
"I can't believe you thought I cared!" Alison shouted one evening, tossing her phone across the room.
Brian's face twisted with anger. "You mean all of this… our so-called 'relationship'… it was just to hurt Audrey?"
Alison shrugged, indifferent. "Exactly. She needed to feel some pain. I didn't love you, Brian. Not really."
Brian sank into the couch, a bitter realization settling over him: using Audrey as a stepping stone had brought him nothing but emptiness.
Then a dangerous thought crossed his mind. Audrey left Ashford, thinking she was safe… but she isn't. I'm going to find her. I'll show her she can't escape me.
A dark determination filled Brian's eyes, hinting at the trouble he was abo
ut to bring to Rosewood.
