Chapter 8 - the lessons

The next day, I met Ezra at the back of the library to start his training. I snuck up behind him and jumped on him. He yelled and tried to throw me off, and I just started cackling. I get down and help him keep his balance.

"Are you good? That was hilarious, you should watch your back and be more prepared." he looked at me with a weird look and shook his head.

"I'm ok, and I'll keep that in mind. Where do we start, and where are we gonna do this?" he stumbles a little, reaching for a chair. I looked at him, concerned, and rushed to his side.

"Are you sure you're ok? You don't look good enough to start training; it can be dangerous. We would have to go to the field, but if you're not feeling well, then we should do this another day." He gently pushes away my help and stands up.

"The altitude is just messing with my body; it's a lot harder to breathe down here, so it's harder on my light body, but I'm fine, it's no big deal."

I rolled my eyes at him. "I guess it doesn't matter where the guy is from; they are almost all alike. But whatever, if you wanna stress your body out, then I can't stop you. Let's start with the basics."

He nodded as I led him to the training field. It's not that long of a walk from the library, but Ezra is looking worse by the minute, and I'm starting to worry. On the walk, he kept tripping over his wings, and every time he did, I picked him up and helped him steady himself. As we walked, Ezra kept asking me questions that had no real meaning to me, probably to keep the attention away from him tripping, but when he asked what type of demon I am, I stopped for a second.

"Why do you want to know? I'm not going to give you information that you can use against me, and at the moment, it is unimportant."

We arrive at the field, and I take off into the air, stretching my wings as far as they go. I can hear Ezra flying after me, but I don't mind; that question is not on the market right now, and he can deal with it. The worst part of his asking is that I don't quite know the answer. My friends and I all have our theories, but we aren't sure. Once I get my memories back, I'll know. I can feel it.

"Why don't we start with flying combat? It'll be easier on your lungs anyway, and you can strengthen your flying abilities in this climate." I looked at him, struggling to catch up, rolling my eyes.

"ok, but why won't you answer my question? I won't use it against you; I don't even know how I would. And I won't judge if that's what you're worried about; you can't change who you are. I just wanna know more about you because I like you." he had nodded and smiled shyly.

My wings stuttered for a moment to a full stop, and I started to plummet to the ground, yelping, putting more power into keeping myself up.

There was a lot to unpack in that little speech, and I don't know what to say except, "I... Well- um.."

I tripped over my words, feeling like a fool. It's not like he confessed his love for me; I need to get a grip. I took a deep breath and just ripped the band-aid off.

"I'm not worried about anything, and you don't need to know anything about me because I am of no importance to you, and you won't be here very long, and I don't wanna risk this turning into something that could get us both killed. My goddess is on my side, and I need to keep it that way. I'll teach you to fight, but we are not friends, and we can't hang out."

He nodded reluctantly, flinching slightly at my tone and words. I hate that I had to talk to him like that, but this is becoming something scary, and it needs to stop. He can't like me, and I can't be falling for him. It's pathetic. For the next few hours, I show him multiple different attacks that some of us often use and some only I am partial to. I could tell after a while that his wings were getting weaker from the strenuous use, and I stopped.

"We are done for today. We can work more on this tomorrow. For now, I need to talk to my friends." I flew away in a rush, not waiting for him to answer.

"We need to get those ingredients now. I can't wait any longer. I need to know who I am, and I need to get Ezra out of here. It's not safe." The door slowly banged against the wall, and I whipped my head to the sound. Fuck. Ezra, he can't know anything!

"Um.. hey," I said tightly.

"Whatcha guys working on?
