Chapter 13 - closed campus 1

The school gates were silent, locked tight with chains that swayed lightly in the cold wind. Dust floated lazily around the metal, catching the sunlight in streaks, as if the building itself were holding its breath. Inside, the corridors were eerily empty, echoing with memories that didn't belong to the present. Every step they took felt amplified. The air wasn't just still it was watching.

Haeun led the group to the far end of the campus, near a forgotten maintenance door. Yellow caution tape flapped gently, coated in layers of dust. A faint vibration hummed through the floor beneath them, subtle but insistent, a pulse of energy almost alive.

"This is it," Haeun said, her voice calm, though her eyes glimmered with determination. She reached for the tape, pulling it aside.

Riven stopped immediately, his body rigid. Chest rising and falling, controlled, eyes sharp and piercing. "Stop," he said, his tone low, almost a growl.

Haeun froze. "What's the problem?"

Riven's hand shot out, grabbing her wrist. "This isn't a joke. You're not going down there alone, and I'm certainly not letting you force anyone."

Haeun's jaw tightened. "Force? I'm not forcing. I'm trying to move us forward. You're hesitating—fine—but this needs to be done."

"I don't trust you," Riven said flatly, letting his glare do the rest of the talking.

Cat flicked her tail, perched on a nearby railing, watching the tension escalate. "Ohh, this is going to be fun. Riven finally has someone to glare at… properly."

Jeong remained quiet, notebook tucked under his arm. Observation. Patience. He knew better than to intervene too early.

Haeun's voice sharpened. "You think I'm hiding something?"

Riven's eyes never left the basement door. "Either you're hiding something, or you have no clue what you're doing. Either way, I don't like it."

The floor trembled lightly, dust lifting as if the basement itself was breathing. Shadows twisted at the edges of their vision.

"I'll go down," Haeun said firmly, taking a step forward.

Riven's hand tightened around hers. "Not happening. Not alone. Not yet."

"You're scared," she said, voice low, almost teasing.

Riven's jaw tightened. "Not fear. Caution. Big difference. And you're pushing too hard."

Haeun exhaled slowly, anger mixing with determination. "Then step aside. Watch if you must, but I'm going down. Now."

Riven's fists clenched. "Force isn't the way. And if you try, I won't hold back. Understand?"

Jeong finally intervened, calm and steady. "We move together. No one goes first, no one stays behind. Everyone observes, everyone reacts."

Cat yawned, dramatically, tail flicking. "Unit cohesion! How romantic."

The vibration underfoot grew stronger. Faint, almost imperceptible at first, it became more insistent, pulsing with a strange life. Riven's eyes narrowed, tracking every shadow, every subtle movement. The aura was alive, sentient, aware of them.

"You feel that?" Haeun whispered, staring at the door. "It's… like it knows we're here."

Riven's glare didn't soften. "It is aware. Every instinct in me says we shouldn't touch a thing. It reacts. If you push it… it'll push back."

Haeun's expression hardened. "Then we face it. That's how we get answers."

Riven's teeth clenched. "Not on my terms."

A vibration ran through the floor again, faint whispers echoing like half-remembered memories brushing against their minds. Riven's fists flexed. The hairs on his neck stood up.

"You're reckless," he muttered. "And you have no idea what's waiting below."

"I don't care," Haeun replied sharply. "I'm done waiting around while you play the hero. We need answers. Now."

The aura pulsed stronger. The shadows stretching across the corridor seemed to twist, reaching toward them, testing them.

Jeong opened his notebook briefly, pen hovering. "We can't ignore this. It's reacting to emotions, tension, presence. Don't act without observing first."

Riven's eyes locked on Haeun. "Observe all you want. Don't force it. Don't think this is a challenge you can muscle through. You push… it burns. You force… it retaliates."

Haeun's jaw tightened. "Then tell me what we should do. Or step aside."

Riven exhaled slowly, his gaze softening just enough for a flicker of acknowledgment. "…Fine. You'll go first. But I'll be watching. One wrong move and"

"you'll stop me," Haeun finished for him, voice steady.

Cat flicked her ears, tail twitching. "I'm gonna enjoy the drama."

Jeong stepped forward, carefully, noting the shadows, the vibrations, the subtle energy that flowed beneath the floorboards. "The basement isn't just a basement," he said quietly. "This energy… it's residual but active. Someone tried to seal it, but the seal failed—or is failing now."

Haeun's eyes widened slightly. "Seal? That explains why the school was shut down so abruptly. Why transfers… why Minho's sudden disappearance abroad."

Riven's eyes narrowed. "…So this is connected. School, missing students, Minho. All of it."

Jeong nodded. "And it's not just residual. It's sentient. Waiting. Testing whoever comes near."

Haeun stepped closer to the tape, ignoring Riven's warning glare. "We need to know what's beneath. If the school shut down for this… someone doesn't want the truth out."

Riven's chest rose sharply. Anger, frustration, caution, all mixed. "…I don't trust you to go down there. I won't."

Haeun stepped forward anyway, ignoring his hand. "Then help me. Or step aside."

Riven's fists clenched. "…I won't stop you."

The aura pulsed violently. Dust rose in the stale air. Shadows quivered, stretching along cracked walls, reaching like fingers.

Jeong finally spoke, calm but firm. "Stop. Observe. This is the threshold. One step beyond, and the seal activates. It's the only thing keeping this place stable."

Haeun hesitated, noticing the faint sigils glowing along the basement doorframe. "…Seal?"

Riven's voice dropped, deliberate. "This seal. If you cross it, we lose control. The energy… it's too unstable. Any disturbance and "

Cat's tail flicked lazily. "Ohhh… dramatic much? I like the tension."

The three of them paused. The air thrummed, the shadows paused, as if waiting for a decision. Haeun's eyes narrowed. "I… I'll wait. But I won't leave without answers. Someone was hiding this. Someone controlled the truth."

Riven's glare softened slightly, just enough that Haeun could see the faint respect hidden beneath his anger. "…Fine. But this seal? It's the only thing holding this place together. Touch it wrong, and it could collapse everything."

Jeong's pen hovered over the notebook. "We document everything. We don't act without thinking."

Haeun nodded slowly. Her voice soft but resolute: "Then let's just… prepare. And when the time comes, we step forward together."

The shadows stretched, pulsing in anticipation. The seal on the door glowed faintly, warning, restraining, holding back something ancient and powerful.

And somewhere deep beneath the school, the energy whispered, watching, calculating. Waiting for the moment the seal would be challenged.

This was the calm before the storm.

And when the storm came

Riven, Haeun, Jeong… none of them would walk away unchanged.
