Chapter 35 - Chapter 35: Night Fifteen - Partnership

Glass everywhere.

Damien covers me. Protecting my body with his.

"Stay down!" He's pulling me under the examination table. Dr. Walsh is already calling 911.

More glass breaking. Something metal hitting the floor.

Not a grenade. A smoke bomb. Just like Montana.

The smell hits me first. Acrid. Chemical. The kind of smell that gets into your lungs and stays there. I press my face against Damien's chest and try to breathe through the fabric of his shirt. Try to keep my breathing shallow. Try to remember what the midwife told me about staying calm. About keeping my heart rate down.

So much for that.

"We need to move," Damien says. "Now. Before they come in."

But we're trapped. The office is on the third floor. One exit. And smoke filling the room.

"The window," Dr. Walsh says. "Fire escape. Go!"

We run. Damien pulling me. Dr. Walsh behind us. Out onto the fire escape. Cold November air. Smoke billowing.
