Chapter 26 - Chapter 26: Kara Has Changed Her Heart

When Lucas Reed saw the message, he immediately straightened up, his expression turning solemn.

His fingers moved rapidly as he replied.

[Alright. Time and place?]

The response came almost instantly.

[You can give me an address. Is it convenient if I come over now?]

Lucas immediately sent his home address.

[That works. Come anytime.]

The moment he sent it, he sprang to his feet in a single motion and was already standing beside the sink.

"You two—go sit on the sofa and watch TV. Now."

"?"

Elaine looked at Lucas in confusion, completely baffled as to what had suddenly gotten into him.

Carrie, however, didn't hesitate at all. She ran straight to the sofa and sat down obediently. Elaine followed and took a seat as well.

About ten minutes later, the doorbell rang.

Carrie jumped off the sofa and trotted over to open the door.

"Hello, big sister. May I ask what you're here for?" Carrie asked sweetly.

"Hello, little one. I'm looking for Lucas Reed. Is he home?"

Kara's gentle voice came from outside.

"You're looking for my brother? He's doing housework right now. Please come in."

Carrie politely opened the door and let Kara inside.

The atmosphere in the living room was unusually quiet.

Lucas and Kara sat side by side on the sofa, yet neither spoke.

Elaine and Carrie tactfully moved to the dining table some distance away, choosing not to interrupt.

But watching the awkward silence stretch on, Elaine finally couldn't help herself.

She coughed lightly.

"Ahem… Carrie, I bought something interesting yesterday. Want to come see it in my room?"

Carrie's eyes lit up.

"Sure!"

The two of them ran upstairs hand in hand. As she climbed the stairs, Elaine gave Lucas an encouraging look.

Unexpectedly, it was Kara who broke the silence first.

"I thought about what you said last time… all night."

She looked at Lucas softly.

"I think you weren't wrong."

"If you hadn't saved me then, I might have been killed by her. And after that, she would have brought disaster to the city I protect, causing countless casualties."

Lucas nodded slightly. It seemed Kara had truly reflected on it.

But then her tone shifted.

"My father once told me that desire is the dark side of life. It always gazes back at you from the abyss."

"If life cannot restrain its desires and sinks into them, then what awaits in the end is self-destruction after being swallowed by the abyss."

"So… I hope that every time you end a life, you'll remember these words."

"I don't want you to be swallowed by the abyss."

"That's all I wanted to say. I wish you well."

With that, Kara stood up and prepared to leave.

But in the next moment, a strong hand firmly grasped her right wrist.

"W-What are you doing?" Kara asked, flustered.

Lucas smiled gently.

"If Clark knew I let his cousin leave like this, I'm pretty sure he'd show up at my door."

"I…"

Kara felt her heartbeat accelerate uncontrollably.

Warmth flowed from his palm—an unfamiliar sensation she couldn't quite describe.

"Besides," Lucas continued calmly,

"at least stay for dinner before you go. That's reasonable, isn't it?"

He tugged lightly, and Kara found herself sitting back down on the sofa.

Her cheeks were already flushed, her heart racing like a startled deer.

"You're not wrong," Lucas said seriously, looking at her.

"Killing can easily cloud the mind and make one lose themselves."

"That's why you should stay by my side and help keep me grounded."

"After all, I did save you once, didn't I?"

"B-But I…"

Kara stammered, unable to finish her sentence.

"What would you like for dinner tonight?"

Lucas deliberately changed the subject to ease her nerves.

Yet his hand never released hers.

He had already made his decision.

Once he chose a path, he would no longer hesitate.

Kara might be kind—so kind she could be called saintly—but every virtue had its counterpart.

A saint meant someone who would never harm you.

If Kara was willing to be the saint, Lucas had no issue being the reaper.

Besides, among all superpowered beings, Kara was exceptionally pure.

Far better than a two-faced dark bat or a morally split patriotic icon.

And there was no need to worry about her becoming a weakness—just eliminate the threats in advance.

A treasure like Supergirl was truly once-in-a-lifetime.

Miss it, and it was gone forever.

Lucas chuckled darkly in his heart, while his face displayed the perfect warm, gentle smile.

"I… I'm fine with anything," Kara said softly.

"Then let's go buy ingredients for tonight's dinner together."

Lucas stood up, still holding Kara's hand, and led her out of the house.

Upstairs, Elaine and Carrie came back down.

"Elaine," Carrie asked curiously,

"Did Kara become my brother's girlfriend?"

"Hmm…" Elaine hesitated.

"Not officially yet—but it's pretty close."

"Do you approve of them being together?" Carrie asked.

"I think they're quite well matched."

Elaine walked to the fridge, took out two apples, and tossed one to Carrie.

"When will they get married and have babies?" Carrie asked innocently.

She opened her mouth and stuffed the entire apple in, chewing loudly.

"Carrie, first of all—girls shouldn't eat so rudely!"

Listening to the crunching sounds, Elaine twitched slightly. She never quite got used to Carrie's eating habits.

"And secondly, marriage requires time for two people to build feelings."

She patted Carrie's head.

"As for having children… that comes after the feelings reach a certain level."

Carrie looked puzzled.

"But a girl in the class next door is pregnant, and she's not married."

"Th-That…"

Elaine coughed awkwardly.

"Carrie, there are always exceptions. That's a special case."

"But I heard there are seven or eight girls like that at the neighboring school," Carrie added.

"Carrie, let's not dwell on this topic. Just remember how things work under normal circumstances, okay?"

Elaine decisively ended the conversation, black lines spreading across her forehead.

"Oh… okay."

Carrie sighed after finishing another apple.

"Mom and Dad were wondering when they could hold a grandchild too."

"..."

Elaine was speechless.

She realized that ever since living with Lucas, all her past experience and knowledge seemed useless.

Yet strangely enough—

She found this life far more interesting than before.
