Chapter 4 - Chapter1: The Day He Saw Her

Pearl was still in school the day he noticed her. The Lagos sun hung low, bathing the campus courtyard in golden warmth. Students hustled to their next classes, laughter and chatter weaving through the air, but Pearl felt invisible—just another face in a crowd, books clutched to her chest, mind already racing ahead to assignments and lectures. She moved with quiet purpose, unaware that eyes were tracking her every step.

He had come to visit a friend, nothing planned, nothing intentional—but the moment he saw her, he could not look away. There was a gravity to her presence that pulled at him, a gentle yet firm certainty in the way she carried herself. Her hair glinted softly under the sun; her gaze, though focused elsewhere, carried a calm strength that made him stop in his tracks.

Later, he would tell her it was love at first sight. That when his eyes landed on her, he knew she was his forever. Pearl had smiled at the confession, charmed by the intensity and conviction in his voice. In a city as chaotic and bustling as Lagos, being chosen, being noticed, felt like a rare gift.

But being seen is not always being cherished, Pearl did not yet know that. Not every glance carries loyalty. Not every promise carries meaning.

He approached her carefully, with a warm, confident smile, the kind that seemed natural yet deliberate. "Hi," he said, voice steady and deep, carrying a weight that made the air between them feel heavier, more intimate. "I saw you from across the courtyard. I just had to meet you."

Pearl blinked, unsure what to say. She felt a flutter of curiosity mixed with wariness. The world seemed to quiet around them. Students passed, voices blended into a distant hum, but for a heartbeat, it was only them.

She answered softly, "Hello… nice to meet you."

From that day, he could not let go. Within hours, he had asked mutual friends for her number, casually weaving it into conversation as if it were the most natural thing in the world. "I'd really like to see her again," he told them, voice easy, confident, and full of certainty. Pearl had no idea her name was already traveling across the lips of friends before she had even spoken to him again.

She noticed him a few days later in class, across the lecture hall, watching her, smiling politely as if he had known her for years. It was unsettling and exciting all at once. She wondered at the boldness, at the certainty that someone could decide you belonged in their life before you even knew them.

Pearl paused that evening on her way back from class, thinking of him. The strange flutter in her chest told her something she didn't yet have words for. She had always been cautious, careful with her heart, but the intensity of his gaze and the confidence in his approach stirred something she could not ignore.

Little did she know, this was the beginning—not just of a romance, but of a journey that would test her faith, her patience, and ultimately, her strength. That single glance, that brief introduction, was the start of a story that would weave itself into every corner of her life, shaping her in ways she could never have imagined.
