Chapter 30
"No worries, leave Kushina to me."
Mikoto clenched her small fists, determination shining on her face.
Ding-ding-ding-ding!
The class bell rang. Mikoto turned back around, waiting for the teacher.
The classroom's noise gradually died down—until Teacher Yamano arrived.
"Good, everyone did well today. No one was late. That deserves praise."
As soon as he entered, Yamano scanned the room. Seeing no empty seats, he gave a satisfied nod.
Then he glanced toward the hallway, saw another teacher standing outside, quickly turned back to the class, and gave an instruction before stepping out.
"Alright, today's a bit special. Self-study for a few minutes. A new student will be joining us soon. Remember—no messing around and embarrassing our class."
The moment Yamano left, the room exploded into chatter. Everyone began wildly guessing about the incoming transfer student.
Aside from Ling Yu and Mikoto—who already knew the truth and stayed calm—almost the entire class joined the speculation.
Some even started arguing over whether the new student would be a boy or a girl, nearly coming to blows.
"I really hope the new student is a boy! Wonder if he'll be as handsome as Ling Yu-kun!"
"No way! There's no way anyone could be more handsome than Ling Yu-kun."
"Yeah… Ling Yu-kun really is the most handsome guy I've ever seen. I wish I could be his girlfriend!"
"You're so bold! But Ling Yu-kun is mine—I'm not giving him up!"
These were the fangirls' dreamy discussions. While talking, they sneaked glances at Ling Yu.
With his superhuman hearing, Ling Yu caught every word. Hearing how precocious these girls were, he couldn't help but sigh inwardly at how early Konoha kids matured.
"I'm betting a week's pocket money that the new student is a girl."
A boy stood up confidently.
"Playing that big? Then I'm betting a week's pocket money the new student is a boy!"
"I bet boy too!"
"Me too!"
"…"
The boys' side was more straightforward. Most of them bet on boy—after all, at their age, they didn't understand romance yet and just wanted more guy friends to play with.
"How about it, Ling Yu? Wanna bet? If you win, you won't have to worry about snacks for the whole month."
Choji Akimichi slid over to Ling Yu's side and whispered.
Choji was extremely sensitive to anything food-related, so he took this bet seriously. Winning more pocket money meant more snacks.
Inoichi Yamanaka and Shikaku Nara had zero interest—they just stayed slumped on their desks, sleeping.
"Not interested."
Ling Yu curled his lip. He had no excitement for a bet with a known outcome—besides, he wasn't short on pocket money. The total amount they were betting didn't even match his daily allowance.
"By the way, which side did you bet on?"
Turning to Choji, Ling Yu asked about his good friend. He figured he should at least give him a hint.
"I haven't bet yet. I just thought of something fun and ran straight to you first."
"Since you haven't bet, I suggest you go with girl. That gives you better odds of winning."
Hearing Choji hadn't bet yet, Ling Yu felt he couldn't just let him walk into a trap.
"Huh? Really? What if I lose?"
"You still don't trust me? If you lose, I'll cover your pocket money."
"R-really? Then… alright. If I win, I'll treat you to barbecue!"
With that, Choji hurried off to place his bet—on girl—one of only two people (besides the boy who started the bet) who chose that option.
If he won, with 20:2 odds, Choji would make a killing.
"Alright, everyone's bets are in. When the new student arrives, we'll settle up."
After collecting and organizing all the pocket money, the boy who started the bet smiled at everyone—his eyes flashing with hidden smugness.
This whole bet had been his scheme. On his way to school, he'd overheard Yamano-sensei talking with another teacher and caught the new student's gender.
The moment Yamano announced a transfer student, he'd thought of the betting idea and set the trap. So far, the plan was perfect.
Though one person had bet the same as him, he didn't pay it much attention—assuming it was just dumb luck.
Ling Yu naturally caught that fleeting smug look. After observing the boy carefully, he noticed there wasn't the slightest hint of nervousness about losing—instead, he looked completely confident.
Ling Yu realized the boy already knew the answer. But he had no intention of exposing it. This wasn't his problem—they'd brought it on themselves. Let it serve as a lesson.
With that thought, Ling Yu lost interest and lay his head on the desk, waiting for Kushina's arrival.
Half an hour passed. Just as everyone grew impatient, Yamano-sensei finally returned.
Seeing no transfer student behind him, everyone's eyes immediately turned toward the door, eager for the reveal.
"Alright, sit properly! What are you all staring at the door for? Don't feel like class today?"
Seeing their behavior, Yamano's forehead veins bulged. He slammed the desk and shouted.
"Two new transfer students will be joining us today. Behave yourselves—no noise. And I don't want to hear about anyone bullying the new students."
After a final warning glare, Yamano stepped aside and called toward the hallway:
"Come in. This will be your classroom from now on."
The moment he spoke, everyone who'd placed bets stretched their necks toward the door, praying the newcomer matched their wager.
Click
The door opened. Two red-haired figures appeared in view.
"Ahhh! Why are they girls?!"
"My pocket money!"
"Damn it, I lost!"
The instant they saw the two girls, the bettors groaned in despair. The classroom instantly erupted into chaos.
Kushina and the other girl were startled by the reaction. They stood frozen at the doorway, nervous and unmoving.
BAM!
"Shut up! What are you all yelling about?!"
Yamano's forehead veins throbbed. He slammed the desk again and roared at the class.
"Did you not hear a word I said? Fine—everyone who shouted just now, copy the Student Code of Conduct ten times!"
"And tomorrow, your parents are coming to school. I'll be having a personal talk with each of them about your behavior."
It was clear—Yamano-sensei was furious.
