Chapter 37: David's Past Is Terrifying

After administering the new treatment, the infants' fevers gradually subsided, and the rashes slowly faded.

After observing for approximately two hours, David successfully received the life extension notification.

This meant eight babies had been saved.

[Rescue successful. Lifespan extended by eight days. Current lifespan: 14 days, 20 hours.]

Suddenly acquiring this much life energy, David felt his steps become lighter, his entire body filled with indescribable euphoria.

This was the first time since arriving in this world that he'd felt genuine distance from the looming specter of death.

Perhaps his nerves could finally relax slightly.

Nearly everyone noticed David's obvious happiness.

However, they assumed David was elated from successfully saving the infants, not realizing his joy was entirely self-serving.

"Successful, right?"

House's question pulled David's floating thoughts back to reality.

"Yes, successful."

House nodded:

"Alright, leave the rest to the nurses. Let's grab dinner.

Chase, you still have room in your car, right?"

"Of course, at your service."

Soon, a upscale bistro welcomed the five casually dressed physicians.

After resolving this sudden viral outbreak, everyone felt considerably more relaxed, chatting and laughing along the way.

However, House and Foreman kept intentionally or unintentionally steering the conversation toward David.

They were indirectly probing into David's background.

For House, if he wanted a fourth fellow, he had to confirm David's clinical competence and past experience.

His clinical abilities had been verified over recent days and were no longer questionable.

But regarding his background, House only knew David claimed to have worked as a field medic overseas.

Honestly, he didn't quite believe it. David's gaunt, sickly appearance didn't remotely resemble a hardened combat medic who'd seen war.

He had to discover what David was concealing!

As for Foreman, he wanted to extract some dirt on David during this dinner.

So David would get discouraged and leave eventually.

Therefore, the five-person conversation consistently circled back to David's past.

After sipping his coffee, House deliberately prompted:

"David, you mentioned being a combat medic previously. Did you encounter any particularly challenging cases there?

You know, I'm always fascinated by complex pathologies."

As soon as these words left his mouth, the private dining room fell silent.

Except for House, the other three hadn't known about this experience.

Cameron was first to express skepticism:

"That's impossible, right? He's so young—how could he have seen combat?"

Then Chase, processing this, also chimed in:

"House, are you serious? With David's build, I doubt he could run a 5K without collapsing."

As for Foreman, he openly scoffed.

Then he abruptly stood, walked to an open floor area, pointed at his eyes with his index and middle fingers in a 'watch this' gesture toward David.

Then he started one-armed push-ups.

After completing thirty, Foreman rose without breaking a sweat and said:

"If David can replicate what I just demonstrated, I'll believe he has combat medic experience.

Otherwise, this background is likely fabricated."

David chuckled, also stood, and walked to the empty space.

Seeing David actually preparing to attempt it, Foreman sneered:

"Kid, don't force yourself if you can't manage it.

Otherwise, I'm concerned we'll be rushing you to the ER before we even eat."

David didn't respond, simply silently enhanced his physical capabilities.

Then, supporting himself on two fingers of one hand, he effortlessly began push-ups.

Two fingers?!

Everyone witnessing this scene couldn't help their jaws dropping.

Anyone who's attempted push-ups understands the difficulty of one-armed variations.

And finger push-ups? Even more challenging than one-armed!

Not to mention David was using only two fingers on one hand!

Was this humanly possible?

Just as everyone sat speechless with shock, David had already completed thirty finger push-ups, and judging by his appearance—not flushed or winded—this was merely a warm-up.

Only then did David address Foreman:

"How's that? Satisfactory? Convinced now?"

These three consecutive questions directly silenced Foreman.

Who would've anticipated that the gaunt, sickly-looking David could perform push-ups to this degree?

You couldn't blame him for being blind—David was simply too deceptive.

This time, not only Foreman believed, but even House, who'd been skeptical, was convinced.

Chase quickly gulped his wine to steady himself—those two-finger push-ups were absolutely terrifying.

Even though David's body weight was minimal, executing this already demonstrated his physical conditioning wasn't as weak as it appeared.

Cameron, seated in her chair, looked at the strength David had just displayed, her eyes filled with fascination.

Then David, having returned to his seat, used film memories to fabricate the brutality of combat without hesitation.

"Honestly, there weren't really complex pathologies in combat zones.

Because there was one critical factor—time.

During quiet periods, soldiers with serious conditions were medevaced to rear hospitals.

During active combat, unfortunately, there were no resources or time for complicated cases—you just had to tough it out.

So the work I performed most frequently was managing GSWs, which is the skill I'm currently most proficient in.

Which is why I occasionally take private contracts to handle these cases.

After all, before my intern salary arrives, I still need to survive."

David smoothly redirected the conversation to the present.

After all, he had no genuine past here, and the larger the fabrication, the more potential inconsistencies.

He needed to redirect their attention elsewhere.

Indeed, after David mentioned taking private contracts, everyone's eyes toward him became curious.

Gunshot wounds! Actual GSWs!

People who receive gunshot wounds and don't report them could only be individuals operating outside the law.

Could David actually be connected to these dangerous elements?

Then David's background was genuinely terrifying.

First combat zones, then involvement with criminal organizations.

House, processing this, suddenly felt a headache developing.

He certainly didn't want his fellow assassinated in some filthy alley someday.

Perhaps his idea of recruiting David as a fellow was misguided?

Foreman, sitting beside him, didn't believe David had the nerve to deal with those people.

Foreman, who'd grown up in rough neighborhoods, had witnessed what gang members did.

This simply wasn't something civilians could handle—these were people who'd shoot you without hesitation.

Foreman frowned:

"Alright, enough. Your fabrication is too amateur.

I haven't seen any scars on you. How could you deal with those people without getting injured?

Moreover, if you genuinely do business with them, the cops aren't to be trifled with—they'll find you eventually!"

The moment Foreman finished speaking, his eyes suddenly widened.

Because two detectives had just entered the restaurant.

After scanning the room, they walked directly toward David's table.

Then, under everyone's shocked gaze, after displaying their badges, they said to David:

"Dr. Wells, there are some matters requiring your assistance with our investigation. Please come with us."
