Chapter 1 - The short story

Me and my buddy James were lying on the grass next to the oak next to our field of crops. It was the middle of June, and he was back in his parents' home from university.

I don't think I can ever forget his expressions at that moment. He would keep staring at the sky and trees and seem like he was in a completely blissful peace. The peace when you can feel when you know everything is sorted out. He would keep smiling a little. I wasn't feeling alright looking at his state somehow and wanted to break the silence.

"When is the new semester?" I asked.

He looked at me with a happy smile and said: "I don't know" and got back to looking at the sky.

I knew from the start that his smartass would not like a simple conversation. So I tried to get more interesting for him.

"Do you know how we can learn many things from nature? Like leaves stop holding on when it's too hard."

"That's true. But who knows? Some people like learning misleading and strange things from even a good example," he said.

"Like what?"

He didn't answer my question and talked after a minute: "Do you know what blue whales do when they realize it's the end?"

"No"

He sighed though still smiling, but I clearly saw those empty and disappointed eyes at the same time. "Gotta go man" he said and leaved.

It's been three months. I came back to tell him what I learned about old blue whales. But he can't hear me anymore. My voice is too small to reach deep under the ground where he is now. His dad came here after some time. After bit of talking he said:

"Only one year and he would get that diploma which my money wasted on."

I said nothing and waited for him to leave so I could clear up the overgrown grass around his grave.
