Chapter 25 - CHAPTER 25 – THE BLACKOUT

"Search everyone!" the head of security bellowed, his voice amplified by the PA system. "Men to the left, women to the right. No exceptions!"

The VIP room was a cage. The heavy oak doors were magnetically sealed.

Daniel stood in front of Elena, his body a human shield. His hand hovered near his waistband.

I can take the first three, he calculated. But the crossfire will hit her.

Elena pressed her back against his chest. She could feel his heart rate. It wasn't racing from fear; it was the slow, heavy thud of a predator preparing to lunge.

He's going to draw, Elena realized. He's going to start a firefight to protect me. And he'll get us both killed.

She needed a distraction. A big one.

She slipped her hand into her clutch. She didn't pull out the data drive.

She pulled out a small, spherical device. An EMP scrambler.

It was designed to kill digital locks, but if she overloaded it...

"Daniel," Elena whispered, her voice trembling with fake panic. "I'm scared."

"I know," Daniel said, his eyes scanning the guards. "Stay behind me. When I move, you run."

"Okay," Elena said.

She dropped the sphere.

She kicked it under a nearby roulette table.

Three.

Two.

One.

ZZZ-CRACK.

The sphere detonated with a burst of electromagnetic distortion.

It didn't just kill the locks. It blew the breaker box on the north wall.

Sparks showered down like fireworks.

And then—

Darkness.

Total, absolute black.

The music died. The lights died.

For a second, there was silence.

Then, the screaming started.

DANIEL'S POV

The moment the lights went out, Daniel moved.

He didn't run. He shifted.

He reached back to grab Elena.

"El—"

His hand grasped empty air.

The crowd surged. Panic was a physical wave, pushing and shoving bodies in the dark.

"Elena!" Daniel shouted.

Someone crashed into him—a large man, smelling of fear and sweat.

Daniel shoved him aside with effortless force.

"Elena!"

A muzzle flash lit up the room for a millisecond.

BANG.

A guard fired a warning shot into the ceiling.

In the strobe-light flash, Daniel saw a guard raising a rifle. He wasn't aiming at the ceiling. He was aiming at the crowd, near the exit.

Near where Elena should be.

The Ghost took over.

Daniel drew his pistol. A suppressed P30L.

He didn't need night vision. He had the muzzle flash burned into his retina.

He aimed into the dark.

Thwip.

A grunt. The sound of a rifle clattering to the floor.

Target down.

Daniel moved through the chaos. He was a shark swimming through a school of panicked tuna.

Another guard loomed in front of him, flashlight beam sweeping wildly.

The beam landed on a woman in a gold dress.

Elena.

The guard raised his weapon. "You! Stop!"

Daniel didn't hesitate. He lunged out of the shadows.

He grabbed the guard's wrist, snapping it upward. Crack.

He drove his elbow into the guard's throat.

The man collapsed without a sound.

Daniel stepped over the body, scanning for his wife.

But when he looked back... the woman in the gold dress was gone.

ELENA'S POV

Elena wasn't running aimlessly.

She was hunting.

When the crowd surged, she had purposely let go of Daniel. She knew he could handle himself in a brawl.

She needed to clear the exit.

She kicked off her high heels. She moved barefoot across the plush carpet, silent as smoke.

The EMP had killed the magnetic locks, but the physical bolts were still engaged on the service exit.

A guard was guarding the door. He was wearing night-vision goggles.

He saw her coming.

He raised his baton.

Elena didn't slow down.

She slid on her knees, the silk of her dress gliding over the floor.

She ducked under his swing.

She drove her silver fruit knife (which she had "accidentally" kept from dinner) into the gap of his tactical vest.

Femoral artery.

The guard dropped.

Elena stood up. She ripped the knife free and wiped it on the guard's uniform.

She looked back into the chaos.

She saw a silhouette moving through the crowd.

Broad shoulders. Lethal precision.

It was Daniel.

She watched him engage a guard.

He moved... fast. Too fast for a Logistics Manager.

Adrenaline, she told herself. Hysterical strength. He's terrified for me.

Then she saw it.

A second guard, hidden in the alcove, aiming a taser at Daniel's back.

Elena reacted instantly.

She grabbed a champagne bottle from a passing waiter's tray.

She hurled it.

It flew twenty feet through the dark.

SMASH.

It connected with the guard's head. He crumbled.

Daniel spun around at the noise.

Elena ducked behind a pillar.

Close call.

She unlocked the service door.

"Exit clear!" she shouted, disguising her voice with a fake sob. "The door is open!"

THE REUNION

The crowd poured out into the alleyway, coughing and screaming.

Rain was falling hard now, washing away the glamour of the casino.

Daniel burst through the door, his gun re-holstered, his tuxedo jacket torn.

His eyes were wild.

"Elena!"

Elena was leaning against a dumpster, shivering. She was holding her shoes in her hand. Her feet were muddy.

She looked small. Fragile.

"Daniel!" she cried out.

He ran to her. He slammed into her, wrapping his arms around her so tight it hurt her bruised shoulder.

"I thought I lost you," he breathed into her hair. "I thought..."

"It was dark," Elena wept, burying her face in his chest to hide the cold calculation in her eyes. "I got pushed. I lost my shoes."

Daniel pulled back. He checked her for injuries.

He saw blood on her dress.

"You're bleeding."

Elena looked down. It was the guard's blood.

"I... someone fell on me," she lied. "I think they were hurt."

Daniel looked at her feet. Muddy. Bare.

He looked at the chaos behind them. Police sirens were wailing in the distance.

"We need to go," Daniel said. "Now."

He picked her up.

Bridal style.

He carried her through the rain toward the valet lot.

Elena rested her head on his shoulder.

She felt the hard outline of his gun under his jacket.

He felt the hard outline of the data drive in her clutch.

"You're safe," Daniel whispered. "I've got you."

"I know," Elena murmured.

I saved your life twice in there, darling, she thought.

And you saved mine once.

We make a good team. It's a shame I have to lie to you.

Daniel reached the car. He kicked the door open.

"Get in," he ordered. "I'm driving."

He threw the car into gear.

The tires shrieked against the wet pavement.

They sped away into the night, leaving the burning casino behind them.
