Aira refused to leave them.

She stitched Riven's ribs with a steady hand that didn't match how hard she was trembling.

"I was a dungeon scout," she said. "Until they decided I was worth more as bait."

Riven coughed. "You should've run."

She met his eyes. "I'm tired of running."

Kael watched her in silence.

She had fire in her hands. Literal fire. It flickered when she breathed too hard.

A broken power. A broken girl.

His kind of people.

Later, when Riven slept, Aira sat beside Kael.

"You killed him for me," she said.

Kael shook his head. "I killed him because I was told to."

Aira studied him. "That's worse."

Kael almost smiled.
