Chapter 26 - CH26- Evolvers

The transition from the isolation container to the heart of the Elite Training Program (ETP) facility was a descent into a world that felt decades ahead of the one Drake had left behind.

The facility, buried deep within the limestone bedrock of a ridge.

This wasn't just a military base; it was a laboratory for the future of the human species.

Drake was ushered into a sterile, high-tech briefing room along with five others. They were a disparate group—a former Olympic sprinter whose eyes shifted colors like oil on water, a silent woman with skin that seemed as dense as polished obsidian, and three others who carried themselves with the predatory stillness of apex hunters.

At the front of the room stood a man who didn't wear a traditional uniform, but rather a pressurized tactical suit that hissed softly with every breath. Behind him, a massive holographic display flickered to life, showing a rotating double helix of human DNA being bombarded by shimmering violet particles.

"Welcome to the spearhead," the man said. His voice was a calm, resonant baritone. "I am Colonel Halloway. You are here because your bodies didn't just survive the X-Energy saturation; they embraced it. But before we teach you how to fight, you need to understand the new taxonomy of the world you are about to inherit."

The New Taxonomy: Biological Classifications.

Halloway tapped a glass tablet, and the hologram shifted to show four distinct human silhouettes, each glowing with varying intensities of violet light.

"We have developed a standardized metric to measure X-Energy density within a biological host," Halloway explained.

"We use the X-Saturant Index (XSI). Your placement on this scale determines not just your power, but your very humanity."

* Enhanced Humans (< 5% XSI): "These are the baseline success stories," Halloway said.

"A human with enhanced attributes—strength, speed, or cognitive processing roughly double the human peak. They are the backbone of our new infantry. They have 5% or less of X-Energy integrated into their cellular structure.

They look human, they act human, but they are 'better.'"

* Evolved Humans (6-20% XSI): "This is the 'Danger Zone.' These individuals have undergone significant DNA restructuring.

Their bodies store between 6% and 20% X-Energy. While they possess massive power, their evolution is barely stable. Physical mutations are common—hardened skin, altered limb proportions—and the psychological strain is immense." He said as he looked around the room.

* Regressives (> 6% XSI, Unstable): The hologram shifted to a distorted, monstrous shape.

"When the mind breaks during the transition, the body follows. A Regressive is a human with an unstable evolution holding 6% or more X-Energy. They lose all higher cognitive function. They are no longer people; they are wild animals with the power to level buildings. They are to be neutralized on sight."

* Evolvers (6-20% XSI, Stable): Halloway looked at Drake and a couple others. "This is you. Evolvers are the elite. You possess the 6-20\% density, but your psyche has remained intact. Because of this stability, you have developed a 'Unique Ability'—a specialized biological function like Drake's adaptive healing."

Halloway paused, the hologram turning a deep, fiery red. "We have one individual in our records who surpassed the 20% mark. When he hit that threshold, he didn't just grow stronger; he underwent a second, total biological restructuring. We call it Elite Evolver. We need more data, but we suspect that 20% is the glass ceiling. Shatter it, and you become something... else."

The Colonel gestured toward a device on the table—a sleek, handheld scanner. "Each person X-Energy capacity is not equal. Your body is a vessel, and some vessels are larger and more durable than others."

He explained the ETP Ranking System, which evaluated candidates based on two metrics: Absorption Rate and Storage Capacity.

* Rank F: Poor absorption and low storage limits. These individuals often burn out faster and weaker.

* Rank D through B: The average range for military-grade Evolved.

* Rank A: Exceptional absorption and alot storage potential. These are the candidates who can sustain prolonged combat and easily reach the 20% threshold.

"There are two ways to progress," Halloway continued, his amber eyes locking onto Drake's. "The first is natural: your body passively absorbs the X-Energy in the atmosphere. It is slow and steady.

The second is The Harvest. When an Evolved life form dies, its stored X-Energy is released in a concentrated burst. If you are the one who ended that life, your body acts as a vacuum. The energy is automatically transferred to you."

A murmur went through the room. The woman with obsidian skin narrowed her eyes. "A killing spree?"

"No," Halloway countered. "The body must digest the energy. If you take in more than your rank allows you to process, you will undergo a Spontaneous Regressive Event.

You will melt from the inside out or turn into a monster. A Rank F can takes days to digest a single harvest; a Rank A can process multiple kills in hours.

Your training will involve learning to control the 'direction' of your evolution—telling your body whether to prioritize strength, speed, or your unique ability."

Halloway's tone shifted from clinical to grim. "You aren't just being trained to look good in a uniform. The world will eventually go dark. We are losing the battle for the wilderness. Your mission will be three-fold:

First, you will patrol the Safe Zones, protecting the unevolved from Regressive threats.

Second, you will push deep into the 'Red Zones' to cull dangerous evolved animals like the ones that thrive to well. And finally..."

The hologram changed again, showing a nothing.

"...you will prepare for the aliens who delivered this 'gift'. I highly doubt they did this out of the goodness of their hearts. They may be terraforming our world, and we believe they are coming to harvest the results. We intend to be the ones standing at the door when they arrive."

...

While Drake was being briefed on the mechanics of his new existence, another conversation was happening eles where.

In the quiet of the night, Zahra sat in the back of a rusted-out van, her hand gripping a burner phone. Outside, the Florida swamp hummed with the sound of a thousand evolved insects.

She dialed Malisa's number.

"Hello?" Malisa's voice came through, a low, resonant hum that made Zahra's own chest vibrate.

"Mal, it's Zahra. I'm moving. I had to leave the city—the looters are gone, but the things that replaced them... you wouldn't believe it."

"I would," Malisa replied softly. "We had a visitor in the backyard. Midnight didn't make the transition well."

Zahra went silent for a moment, the weight of the words hitting her. "I'm sorry, Mal.

It's fine. Drake called. He's in the Elite program. He told us to head to the Orlando Safe Zone. It's the most fortified sector in the Southeast."

"We're preparing the car now," Malisa said. "Daymon's healing, and Ryan... Ryan's just being Ryan."

"I'm seeing things on the road—plants that move when you aren't looking, birds that can throw lightning. The near future isn't going to be about politics or money anymore. It's going to be about who can digest the most X-Energy without losing their mind."

"Drake thinks we're just waiting for things to get back to normal," Malisa whispered.

"He has no idea what we've seen. He still thinks he's the only one who had to fight."

"Let him think that for now," Zahra urged. "He needs that focus to get through the training. If he's going to be an 'Elite,' he needs to believe he's fighting for a family that's still soft and human. But we know better. I'llmeet you at the North Gate of the Orlando Zone in three days. If you see a white van with a cracked windshield, that's me."

"Be careful, Zahra. The 'Regressives' aren't just in the cities."

"I know," Zahra said."Mal. I'll see you in Orlando."
