Chapter 11 - chapter 10

Morning arrived quietly at Jae-min's house, but the air between them was anything but calm.

Yoon Ara moved through the dining area with measured steps, careful not to make unnecessary noise. She set the breakfast tray on the table, just as the housekeeper had instructed, then stood aside with her head lowered. Across the table, Jae-min sat scrolling through his phone, his expression unreadable.

The silence pressed down on her chest.

"Sit," he said suddenly.

Ara hesitated before taking the chair opposite him. She folded her hands in her lap, her posture straight, her voice gentle. "Is there something you need?"

He looked up at that, his gaze sharp. "At the office, don't go where you don't belong."

Ara's brows knit together. "I'm sorry… I don't understand."

"The balcony," he said coldly. "You seem to like it there."

Her breath caught.

So Yura had spoken after all.

"I was only there because—"

"Because you felt comfortable?" he interrupted. His tone was flat, but something dark flickered in his eyes.

Ara's face paled. "That's not true."

Jae-min leaned back in his chair, studying her like a stranger. "You should remember your position. This marriage is a contract, not an invitation to cross boundaries."

Each word landed like a quiet blow.

"Yes," Ara whispered. "I understand."

She stood up quickly, afraid her voice would betray her if she stayed any longer. Jae-min watched her retreating figure, irritation curling tightly in his chest. He didn't like the way guilt brushed against his anger. He especially didn't like how Yura's words kept replaying in his mind.

You and Jae-min were together on the balcony.

At the office later that day, the distance between them only grew. Jae-min avoided Ara entirely, delegating tasks through others, his tone curt whenever their paths crossed.

Ara worked silently, her focus unwavering, though her heart felt heavier with each passing hour.

Near evening, she stepped out onto the balcony again—only for air, only to breathe.

She didn't expect to find Jae-min there.

He stood near the railing, jacket loosened, his gaze fixed on the city below. When he turned and saw her, his expression hardened.

"I told you not to come here."

Ara clenched her hands. "I wasn't following you. I just—needed some air."

"Or were you hoping someone would see us again?" he asked coolly.

Her eyes widened. "Why would you say that?"

He stepped closer, his presence overwhelming. "Because people talk. And I don't tolerate misunderstandings."

Ara looked up at him, hurt shining plainly in her eyes. "Then don't believe them."

For a split second, something wavered in his gaze.

Before he could respond, a familiar voice broke the tension.

"Jae-min?"

Yura stood at the balcony entrance, smiling softly as her eyes flicked between them.

Ara stepped back instinctively.

And just like that, the fragile moment shattered—leaving all three of them standing on opposite sides of a truth no one was willing to say aloud.
