Chapter 49 - Chapter 49 — The One Who Sat First

Gu Yan was reviewing records in the outer hall of Cloudwatch Sect when the air shifted.

It was subtle.

Not a pressure, not a fluctuation of spiritual energy—just a faint disturbance, like the sky itself had briefly inhaled.

His hand paused.

Gu Yan lifted his head and looked up.

Two figures were descending from above the mountain.

His eyes narrowed slightly.

Usually, only one person came this way.

Qingshi.

The Dao Warden of Stillwater did not visit often, but when he did, he descended alone, his presence unmistakable. Yet now, beside him, another figure moved through the clouds.

Calmly. Naturally.

Gu Yan stood.

He left the hall without hesitation and stepped onto the stone platform outside.

As the two figures touched down, Gu Yan bowed deeply.

"Dao Warden Qingshi."

Qingshi inclined his head in acknowledgment.

Gu Yan straightened, then turned his gaze to the second person.

An ordinary man.

Plain robes. No sect markings. No clan insignia. No visible token of authority.

Gu Yan sensed his cultivation almost immediately.

Early Foundation Realm.

The aura was clean, restrained—nothing special at first glance.

Gu Yan's thoughts moved quickly.

Perhaps a low-ranked disciple from some hidden faction.

Or someone like his former self—an independent cultivator walking a narrow path.

Yet something felt… wrong.

The man stood there quietly, hands at his sides, expression neutral. But Gu Yan could not read him at all. No intent. No ambition. No curiosity.

It was as if his presence did not disturb the world around him.

That unsettled Gu Yan more than any overwhelming pressure could have.

Qingshi spoke briefly. "Let's go inside."

They moved to a nearby courtyard.

It was simple, open to the sky, with three cushions arranged around a low table.

The ordinary man walked in first.

Without hesitation, he sat down.

Center cushion.

Qingshi stopped.

Gu Yan stopped as well, instinctively remaining a step behind.

For a breath, the courtyard was silent.

Gu Yan's heart skipped.

Qingshi… was standing.

The realization struck like a thunderclap.

Who could sit while the Dao Warden remained on his feet?

Before Gu Yan could process it, the seated man looked up.

"Sit," he said casually.

Qingshi obeyed at once, lowering himself onto the cushion without the slightest hesitation.

Then Qingshi glanced at Gu Yan.

"Sit."

Gu Yan did so mechanically.

His back was straight, his hands folded, but inside his mind was in chaos.

Early Foundation Realm.

No token.

No robe.

Yet he had just commanded the Dao Warden as if it were natural.

Only one conclusion formed, slow and heavy.

Someone extremely close to the Lord of the Immortal Realm.

Qingshi turned to Gu Yan. "Give the report."

Gu Yan steadied himself and spoke.

"Since the Heaven Aid was used, only one cultivator has successfully broken through to Golden Core."

Qingshi's gaze sharpened slightly. "Who?"

"An independent cultivator. Surname Mo."

Gu Yan hesitated, then added, "It was unexpected. He held no sect position, no clan backing."

The seated man responded instead.

"He succeeded because he was freer than the others."

The words were spoken lightly, without emphasis.

Qingshi nodded. "That aligns with the records."

Gu Yan felt his scalp tighten.

Golden Core matters were life-and-death boundaries, discussed with reverence even among elders. Yet this man spoke of it as if commenting on the weather.

Qingshi continued, "I cannot remain here to teach young disciples."

Gu Yan looked up.

"Disciples will be sent to Cloudwatch. You will guide them."

For a moment, Gu Yan forgot to breathe.

Teach?

Recognition surged through him—shock, gratitude, something dangerously close to validation.

After decades of isolation, after watching peers fall one by one, Heaven had not forgotten him.

Then the feeling shifted.

The mountain was empty.

Most were gone—dead, failed, or scattered.

Only he remained.

The man in the center cushion stood.

"I want to roam Stillwater," he said.

Gu Yan reacted instantly. "I know the region well. I can guide you."

Qingshi nodded.

The man smiled faintly. "Then let's go."

And just like that, Gu Yan stepped unknowingly into a path that would reshape his understanding of Heaven itself.
