Kael's eyes were locked on me, storm-gray and burning. He'd seen me read his mind. Felt it. The bond flared hot between us, no longer muted by the amulet—his anger crashing into me like a wave.

"You read my mind," he said. Voice low. Furious. "After I warned you. Several times."

I shook my head frantically, tears blurred my vision "You don't believe me. You think I poisoned him. You think I'm capable of—of killing him."

He took one step forward. The wolves tensed, but he raised a hand. Stopped them.

"If you think for a second that I believe you're capable of such—" His voice broke—just a fraction. He grabbed my hands—gentle, despite the rage in his eyes—turned my palms up again. Saw the green stains. His thumbs brushed over them, almost like he was trying to wipe them away. "Riley. Look at me.Then you do not know me at all"

I did. Tears streaming now—hot, angry, ashamed. "I didn't do it. I swear. I didn't—"
