Chapter 6 - CHAPTER 6 The Pendant and the Promise

The sun had barely started to peek over the horizon when the dormitory halls erupted into another symphony of yawns, rustling bags, and groggy whispers. It was the second day of our school trip, and the sleepy haze hadn't quite left anyone's eyes.

I stumbled out of bed, knocking my sock drawer over in the process. Great start. Somehow, mismatched socks had become the unofficial uniform for the morning, and judging by the piles of footwear scattered across the hall, I wasn't alone in this fashion crime.

As I wandered the hallway, Daiki appeared, eyes half-shut but still managing to grin like a man who'd won a midnight snack jackpot.

"Haruto, my man!" he slurred dramatically, holding a crumpled packet of chips. "If we don't survive today's jungle of doom, just remember… I called dibs on your secret stash."

I laughed, shaking my head. "It's a school trip, not a survival mission. Unless you're planning to wrestle bears."

"Only mentally," he mumbled, stuffing chips in his mouth.

The dining hall was a riot of noise, clattering trays, and endless chatter. Miyako was already in full boss mode, rallying a group of girls to claim the best seats near the windows. I scanned the crowd and felt my heart jump when I spotted Yumiko. She slid into the seat beside me like she owned the place, her grin radiant.

"Sleep, okay? Or did Daiki snore you into a new dimension?" she teased, nudging my arm with a playful smirk.

"More like a motorbike fighting a blender," I said, letting out a dramatic yawn.

Her laughter was like a melody I wanted to hear on repeat.

"And hey," she said, pulling something out of her pocket—a small, neatly wrapped box tied with a red ribbon. "I got this for you."

My brain did that cartoon double-take thing. "For me?"

"Don't get weird," she rolled her eyes. "It's just a pendant I picked up at the gift shop yesterday. I thought it looked like you."

I blinked. "Like me?"

She shrugged; cheeks tinged pink. "Light-hearted, kind, a little awkward—but always trying."

Carefully, I untied the ribbon and opened the box. Inside lay a silver pendant, shaped like a delicate feather. The metal caught the light, shimmering with a subtle glow. It felt like it was meant to be mine.

"It's… really cool," I said, trying to keep my voice steady, though inside I was a mess of excitement and nerves.

"Just promise me you won't lose it," Yumiko said softly.

"I won't," I vowed, fastening it around my neck. The cool metal settled against my skin, already feeling like a part of me.

The morning sped by in a blur of activity. Our group was split into teams for a treasure hunt—an epic race through the forest to solve riddles and collect clues.

Lucky—or maybe fate was on my side—I was paired with Yumiko. From the moment we dashed into the woods, everything felt electric. We sprinted between trees, dodged low-hanging branches, and laughed at each other's clumsy stumbles.

At one point, I tripped on a gnarled root and almost went headfirst into a bush. Yumiko caught me just in time, steadying me with her hands on my shoulders.

"Captain Clumsy, reporting for duty," I joked, rubbing my scraped knee.

"More like a trip-preventer," she teased, her smile bright.

We worked seamlessly together, decoding clues and racing against other teams. Our laughter echoed through the forest, blending with the chirping birds and rustling leaves.

When the hunt ended, we landed second place—close enough to celebrate, but still with room for playful trash talk.

Back at the resort, the evening descended into a cozy campfire gathering. Flames crackled and popped, casting flickering shadows. Someone pulled out a guitar, filling the night air with soft melodies. Others told ghost stories, while a brave soul attempted beatboxing—with mixed results.

Amidst the lively chaos, Yumiko tapped my shoulder.

"Wanna take a walk?" she asked quietly.

I nodded, heart skipping a beat.

We slipped away from the noisy crowd and wandered under a sky blanketed with stars. The cool night air wrapped around us like a gentle hug.

"It's peaceful out here," Yumiko murmured.

"Yeah," I agreed. "Like the whole world just paused."

She looked up, her eyes shimmering with starlight. "I'm glad I moved here."

"Really?" I asked.

She nodded, a shy smile playing on her lips. "When my dad got transferred, I thought I'd be alone forever—always the new kid. But now… it feels like I've finally found where I belong."

Her words struck a chord deep inside me. I smiled, feeling the warmth of the pendant against my chest.

"I'm glad I met you," I whispered.

Yumiko's smile grew, her hand brushing lightly against mine. The moment stretched, filled with unspoken feelings and soft promises.

We stood there, side by side, letting the silence speak for us.

Later, as I lay in bed, the pendant resting against my skin, I thought about the day—about friendship, trust, and the beginnings of something more.

I closed my eyes, a small smile tugging at my lips.

So am I, Yumiko.

So am I.
