Chapter 8 - The First Synchronization

The silence after the aristocratic gala was not the kind that soothed the nerves, but a long pause filled with echoes. Alessandro and Elena returned to the guest wing of the palace with steps slower than usual, as if the night air still carried remnants of the dance music and emotions that had yet to settle. Neither of them spoke, yet their minds shared the same new awareness. What had happened in the grand hall had not ended there.

Elena sat on the edge of the bed, removing her gloves with deliberate care. The tightness in her chest had faded, but traces of the feeling remained, like the imprint of pressure that refused to vanish completely. Alessandro stood near the window, gazing into the darkness outside, his jaw set in the familiar way he used when holding back an emotional storm. They remained silent long enough for the quiet to feel almost courteous.

"Do you feel it too," Elena asked at last, her voice soft but steady.

Alessandro nodded without turning. "Yes," he replied shortly. "And I do not like it."

Elena smiled faintly. "That is a relief. For a moment I was afraid I was the only one feeling strange."

Her comment made Alessandro glance at her before letting out a quiet huff. "I am the heir of Ravenna," he said. "Feeling strange should be a rare occurrence."

"What a shame, Lord Ravenna," Elena replied lightly. "Our curse clearly never studied Northern etiquette."

---

They had barely begun to process that exchange when the air in the room shifted. The small lamps along the wall flickered, and the shadows in the corners stretched in ways that defied reason. Alessandro went on alert at once, his hand moving to the hilt of his sword before thought could catch up. Elena rose to her feet, her expression sharpening from ease to focus in a single breath.

"This is not a normal effect of the curse," Elena murmured.

Alessandro nodded. "Shadow creatures," he said quietly. "I can feel them."

As if answering his words, the temperature plunged. The shadows on the floor began to writhe, as though something living was awakening after a long sleep.

The attack came with little warning. From the walls, from the floor, from corners that should not have held such depth, the shadows gathered into figures that were not entirely solid. Their eyes gleamed pale, and the sounds they made resembled many whispers colliding at once.

"Well," Elena drew in a deep breath, "this is clearly not the right moment for emotional reflection."

"For once," Alessandro replied, "I agree."

---

Without a signal, without a command, they moved.

Alessandro stepped forward, his sword flashing coldly, while Elena instinctively took the perfect position at his side. Not behind him, not ahead of him, but exactly where she needed to be. There was no discussion, no spoken strategy, yet their bodies seemed to know precisely what to do.

The first creature lunged from the left. Before Alessandro could even think, Elena raised her hand, golden light splitting the darkness. At the same moment, Alessandro turned, his blade cutting through the shadow already weakened by her magic. The movement was so seamless it felt impossible that this was their first time fighting together.

In Alessandro's mind, there was an unexpected calm. No doubt, no urge to control every variable. He knew Elena would be in the right place at the right second. Elena felt the same certainty. Every step Alessandro took felt predictable, not through habit, but through a synchronization born of something deeper.

"To the right," Elena whispered, even before she realized she had spoken.

Alessandro was already moving right.

"Jump," Alessandro said almost simultaneously.

Elena had already jumped.

To an outside observer, it would have looked like a lethal dance. Light and shadow clashed, magic and steel intertwined, and two nobles once bound by rigid etiquette now moved with almost wild freedom. One by one, the shadow creatures fell apart, dissolving like smoke deprived of its source.

---

Even in the midst of an intense battle, comedy found its way in. One creature tried to strike from behind Elena, and Alessandro reacted on instinct, shoving her aside with more force than necessary. Elena stumbled, nearly losing her balance.

"Alessandro," she snapped. "I would like to remain upright after this."

"Sorry," he answered quickly, then added, "you were too close to danger."

Elena steadied herself and grinned. "We are bound by a ten meter curse, remember. Too close has become a lifestyle."

Alessandro almost smiled. Almost. He cut down another creature as the thought crossed his mind. Even in chaos, they still found room to tease each other, and strangely enough, it only made their movements more fluid. Each light remark loosened the tension, allowing their bodies to move with greater ease.

The final attack came with greater force. The shadow swelled, devouring the surrounding light. Without exchanging a word, Alessandro and Elena stood side by side. He raised his sword, she lifted her hand, and in the same instant they struck. Elena's light wrapped around Alessandro's blade, creating a brilliance that pierced the darkness with deadly precision.

The creature screamed before shattering completely, its form scattering and vanishing, leaving the room in sudden silence.

---

The silence after the battle was different from the one before. There was no echo of threat, no pressing tension. Only their heavy breathing and the awareness of what had just occurred. Alessandro lowered his sword slowly. Elena let her hand fall. They stood there, looking at each other without speaking.

There was something intimate in that quiet, something that made Elena's heart beat a little faster. She did not feel afraid or confused. She felt understood. Alessandro felt the same, though he would deny it if forced to put it into words.

"That was," Elena began, then stopped. "We were not a mess," she finished.

Alessandro nodded. "For the first time," he said softly, "I did not feel alone in a fight."

Elena smiled, gentler than usual. "Neither did I."

They fell silent again, and this time the quiet did not feel awkward. It felt like a safe space they had built together without realizing it.

Footsteps sounded in the distance. Giuliano and Chiara arrived late, their faces filled with shock as they took in the remnants of the battle.

"What did I miss," Giuliano asked.

Chiara studied the two of them, then smiled broadly. "Something important," she said with satisfaction.

Alessandro and Elena exchanged a glance, then exhaled almost in unison.

That first synchronization had not only been about combat. It was proof that their curse had changed into something else. Something stronger, more dangerous, and far closer to the heart.
