Chapter 18 - A Promise Under the Stars

That night, Ravenna felt different. A gentle breeze swept through the palace grounds, carrying the scent of nocturnal flowers that bloomed quietly, while lanterns flickered like falling stars drawing near. Alessandro stood on the terrace, his black cloak fluttering in the wind, adding to the aura of authority he usually maintained—yet tonight, his heart was far more vulnerable. Elena emerged from the shadows, her steps light, her white gown reflecting the moonlight as if the entire world wanted to spotlight her.

"Have you been waiting long?" Elena asked softly, yet Alessandro could sense the mix of nervousness and resolve in her mind through their telepathy.

"Not long… at least by the standards… eh, the standards I set myself," Alessandro replied, taking a deep breath, trying to hide his unease. Their telepathy worked both ways: Elena felt the rhythm of his heartbeat, and Alessandro felt the calming warmth that radiated from her. 'Why does this feeling always make me lose my composure?' he thought, slightly frustrated.

---

He looked at Elena with eyes that were usually cold and commanding, but tonight they were different—soft, sincere, and slightly trembling. "Elena… there is something I want to say. Actually, this isn't for everyone, not for protocol, not for politics or aristocracy… it's just for you," Alessandro said, his voice low but clear to Elena.

Elena smiled, feeling warmth mixed with a touch of awkwardness. "You sound so serious… it makes me a little scared."

Alessandro swallowed, a faint blush brushing his face in the lantern light. "I… I can't pretend anymore. Our telepathy, the curse we endured… it all points to one thing. I don't want to live without you by my side."

Elena looked at him, her eyes shining. She could feel every tremor of his emotions, yet this time it was not the usual tension or lingering worry—it was pure courage.

---

Alessandro pulled a small box from the pocket of his cloak. The box was simple, dark wood with delicate carvings, no jewels or gold, only the understated mark of Northern authority: sincerity. He knelt beneath the moonlight, letting the long shadow veil his face, and gazed at Elena fully—without his usual cold mask, without the strain of protocol.

"Elena Rosalinda della Fiorenza," he said, his voice trembling slightly. "I choose you, not for your status, not for your beauty or intelligence—though all of that amazes me. I choose you because you are the light at my side, the shadow that completes me… and I want to spend the rest of my life with you by my side."

Elena paused, staring at Alessandro standing tall under the moonlight. She felt their telepathy align perfectly—the rhythm of her heart, the beat of his pulse, and the faint smile spreading across his lips. 'There is nothing to question. I want to be with him,' Elena thought firmly.

---

Alessandro opened the box slowly, revealing a simple ring—white gold with a single small stone that reflected the moonlight as if dancing on its surface. He held his breath, waiting. The world could have been silent, the stars watching, yet for Alessandro, time had stopped.

"Will you be a part of my life, in light and shadow, in laughter and in tears, through all the possibilities to come?" he asked, his voice hoarse but resolute.

Elena lowered her head for a moment, smiling softly. "I… yes," she said, her voice steadier than Alessandro had anticipated. Their telepathy conveyed her joy: Alessandro felt warmth flooding his heart, Elena felt the serenity that made her want to cry happy tears.

---

Alessandro smiled, rising slowly, brushing Elena's hair gently—a gesture rare for him, but now felt natural. "I will make this promise more than just words. I will protect you, support you, and… make you laugh every day."

Elena giggled, her voice ringing through the quiet night. "Are you serious? Because I hope you can laugh too. Sometimes I think you're too cold to laugh."

Alessandro looked at her, a faint blush coloring his cheeks. "I… I will learn. For you, I will learn." He tilted the ring box slightly, spinning it with his hand, gazing at Elena with unwavering determination. "But don't expect me to lose all of my authority. That is my right, even in love."

Elena laughed again, holding Alessandro's hand, and embraced him gently. "I don't want you to lose your authority. I just want you to stay yourself, and stay with me."

---

They stood beneath the twinkling stars, their telepathy a silent bridge uniting every feeling. The night breeze carried the scent of flowers, the rustle of leaves, and far above, the moon seemed to watch them as a witness. Alessandro bowed, touching Elena's hand that held his firmly.

"You know," he whispered, voice only for her, "this is the first time I feel… complete. Without hiding anything."

Elena smiled, her eyes gentle and luminous. "Me too. I feel… peace, and happiness. Even with all this strange telepathy, we are in perfect harmony. I feel like we are truly one."

Alessandro squeezed her hand, a faint smile forming on his usually cold face. "One soul, two wills… now, one promise."

---

In the distance, the city of Ravenna lay calm. No festive music, no sparkling lights—just night, stars, and two people who had found the courage to bind their hearts with a sincere promise. Chiara, watching from afar, clapped softly, a wide smile on her face. "Ah, finally! Not just political drama, but real love drama!"

Giuliano, emerging from behind a tree, chuckled while shaking his head. "I have to admit, I didn't expect Alessandro to look so… romantic. It's funny and touching at the same time."

Alessandro, noticing them, glanced toward his two friends with a mixed expression—angry, amused, yet relieved. "Stop commenting. This is a serious moment," he said, though his cheeks were slightly red. Elena giggled beside him, patting his back gently. "Serious moment but… still funny if you watch it from the outside."

---

After a while, they sat on the terrace steps, gazing at the endless sky. Elena leaned on Alessandro's shoulder, and he let himself feel warm, safe, and… slightly awkward, yet happy. "You know, I don't need a palace, a party, or a title to feel complete," he whispered.

Elena nodded, her soft voice almost merging with the rustle of the wind. "Me neither. I just want you by my side. That is enough."

Alessandro smiled, looking at the simple ring now circling Elena's finger. "Simple, yet sincere," he murmured, "like us."

Elena smiled, and for the first time since the curse appeared, they truly felt free—not from distance or from the curse, but from the fear of acknowledging their love. The telepathy that once felt binding now felt perfectly harmonious, like a beautiful symphony of light and shadow.

---

They spent the night talking lightly, joking, and gazing at the stars. Alessandro occasionally made dramatic comments about the shadows on the terrace, Elena laughed at his theatrical tone, and Giuliano, stalking from afar, chuckled along.

"Your shadow looks too long, Lord Alessandro," Elena teased, her eyes twinkling.

Alessandro turned, slightly embarrassed, but quickly replied with a serious tone that failed to intimidate. "The shadow… is a symbol of Northern power! You should respect it!"

Elena laughed loudly, and through their telepathy, Alessandro felt that laughter pierce through his entire heart. He murmured softly, 'I don't care. I will face shadows, light, and all of this… with you.'

---

As dawn began to appear on the eastern horizon, the first light touched their cloak and gown. Elena gripped Alessandro's hand tightly. "We made a promise, in light and shadow, and tonight we are truly united," she said.

Alessandro looked at her, a soft smile forming on his face. "And no politics, protocol, or curse can change that," he whispered. Their telepathy echoed in harmony: warmth, courage, and undeniable love.

That night ended with them sitting on the terrace, hands entwined, staring at a world now full of possibilities. Ravenna, the stars, and the night breeze bore silent witness to their simple yet sincere promise—a promise that bound them in a love forever in sync, beneath light and shadow.
