Chapter 10 - at the restaurant

I pouted in displeasure. Sometimes, he really could be harsh with his words.

Did he not care about the women he had slept with before?

But I could only murmur this in my heart. I didn't dare speak honestly. I knew he was in a bad mood and that I'd be in trouble if I annoyed him. I had to keep quiet.

After a long moment, I finally decided to take the 12-hour emergency pills. As I opened the package, Nathan handed me a fresh bottle of water.

At least he knew I needed water.

I took the bottle and swallowed the pills without hesitation.

Nathan watched me, frowning, without saying a word. I couldn't tell what he was thinking from those deep eyes.

Me: "I've paid my debt. I think from now on, we'll be strangers. Don't ever bother me again."

After a short pause, I tidied up my outfit a little and spoke seriously, looking Nathan straight in the eyes.

He frowned and stared silently at me. I had no idea what was going through his mind. His expression was always sly, giving me the impression he was a dangerous man—you could never predict what he was thinking.

Me: "I'm leaving."

Not wanting to stay with Nathan any longer, I opened the car door and got out.

Nathan was silent, not uttering a word as he watched me go. He started the car abruptly and left me in the dust.

I pouted, feeling a little angry. This man was really rude.

After a while, I took a taxi back to Liliana's. It was only on the way that I realized Nathan had left his suit jacket on me.

I stayed at Liliana's house for the next few days. She had been very busy with work lately, and I was waiting for the results of my interview. All I could do was stay home and help with some chores and cooking.

After all, it was kind of her to let me stay. I couldn't just freeload, since she was so busy.

One day, while I was vacuuming the house, my phone suddenly rang. It was an unknown number. I frowned warily and answered.

At first, I thought it was just a random call. But, surprisingly, it was from Hayseed Inc., informing me that I had been accepted for the position.

I had thought I failed the interview, since there had been no news for several weeks. Initially, I had planned to apply elsewhere if I didn't hear back, but unexpectedly, I got accepted.

I couldn't calm down even after hanging up, and I screamed in excitement alone in the living room.

The person on the phone told me to report for onboarding the next day.

I was in a great mood and felt much more motivated to do household chores. I cleaned Liliana's house from top to bottom and washed all her clothes in the afternoon.

Liliana was shocked when she saw the house spotless. She couldn't believe it and stared at me, mouth agape.

Liliana: "Irene, what happened? Why did you clean the house so thoroughly today?"

She walked around the living room and approached me with a suspicious look.

Me: "Liliana, I got accepted by Hayseed Inc.! I officially start work tomorrow."

Liliana: "Really? Irene, I knew it would happen! You're so good at advertising! Hayseed Inc. made the right choice hiring you."

She gave me a big hug and seemed even happier than I was.

Me: "I start work officially tomorrow. Let me treat you to a nice dinner tonight!"

Since I was starting at Hayseed Inc. tomorrow, I decided to treat Liliana tonight to thank her for letting me stay over the past few weeks.

Liliana: "Let's go! I'll pick the restaurant for dinner."

She seemed even happier when she heard I was treating her.

Me: "Oh, by the way, invite your boyfriend too! I haven't met him yet. Tonight will be a good opportunity."

I asked to meet Liliana's boyfriend, remembering our conversation from earlier that day.

Of course, Liliana didn't refuse, since she was my best friend. She immediately took out her phone to call him.

Liliana reserved the restaurant, and we took a taxi there.

Liliana's boyfriend, Isaac Franks, didn't arrive until half an hour later.

I looked him over. He was tall and seemed reserved, wearing glasses.

Liliana: "Isaac, why are you so late? We've been waiting forever!"

As soon as Isaac appeared, Liliana went to him and held his arm closely. She was usually lively, but in front of him, she became docile and sweet.

I couldn't help but smile at the change in Liliana. She really transformed in an instant. I wondered if Isaac even noticed how she behaved.

During the meal, I saw Isaac constantly checking his phone. He seemed stressed, which made me even more puzzled.

Me: "Franks, you keep looking at your phone and seem distracted. Is something wrong?"
