Chapter 2 - Prologue II

"Oh, my lover… you have come."

The woman's voice was warm—too warm—laced with an unmistakable possessiveness.

"Who are you?" I asked, instinctively stepping back.

"I am the one you gave everything to~"

She began walking toward me, her steps slow and deliberate.

Confusion washed over me—then realization struck.

"…You were that voice," I whispered, staring at her.

"What are you?"

She didn't stop until she stood directly in front of me. Leaning closer, her veil brushed against my cheek.

"I'm the one you gave everything to~"

A faint smile formed beneath her veil.

"No. What are you?" I demanded, fear and confusion forcing me to lean away.

"Well," she said softly, circling around me, "I am what you desperately cling to. Your past. Your regrets. Your depression."

She chuckled.

"I am your misery—a concept born from suffering, given form~"

"You're lying," I whispered, my eyes following her movements.

"Of course I'm lying," she replied playfully.

"But I'm also the truth."

She stopped behind me.

"I am a Goddess, darling~"

"And this world… is going to change."

She leaned close and whispered into my ear before returning to where she first stood.

"Wait!"

I stepped forward, reaching for her shoulder—but she was too far away. Still, my voice made her pause.

She turned.

"If you're the Goddess of everything I cling to…" I said hesitantly, "then you must be Oizys."

She answered only with a smile.

The dream shattered.

I jolted awake.

"Fuck!"

Sweat drenched my face as I shot up from my bed.

BOOM!

A massive explosion echoed outside my apartment.

I rushed to the window.

Chaos.

The world outside was burning. People screamed. Fires spread. Sirens wailed.

I turned on the TV, frantically switching channels until the news appeared.

"—Breaking news. The world is changing.

Unknown creatures immune to modern weaponry have manifested globally. A new energy—far more potent than nuclear power—has invaded Earth. This energy has been named Ether. The monsters appear to be composed of it and are immune to all weapons except high-yield explosives—"

The words hit me like a hammer.

My breath caught.

My wish…

The selfish desire I whispered last night—

It came true.

BOOM!

Another explosion.

I rushed back to the window.

Monsters rampaged through the streets, tearing everything apart.

Then—

A blue screen appeared in front of me.

"…Isn't this like a game?" I muttered, staring at the screen.

My eyes landed on one line.

Contract: Goddess of Misery

"So it was real," I whispered.

"It was real, my dear.

A seductive voice sent chills down my spine.

I turned—

She floated before me, her hands gently tracing the ancient symbols carved into my face.

"Oizys," I said.

She smiled beneath her veil.

There was no choice but to accept her.

"The world is ending," she whispered,

wrapping her arms around me.

"What will you do?"

"I'll survive," I replied, pulling away and heading for the fridge.

The screaming outside slowly faded.

"…Fuck."

The food inside would last only a week—maybe two.

"What will you do, dear?" she whispered again.

"I'm going out," I said, biting my lip. "You cursed me not to die."

Immortality. Regeneration.

If regeneration failed, immortality would activate—negating death itself, even attacks that erased concepts.

"You really want me to suffer?" I asked, turning to face her.

"No~" she replied sweetly.

"I want you to be safe~"

Her warmth felt fake.

I said nothing more.

Grabbing a kitchen knife, I left the apartment.

Death cannot take me.

I am cursed to suffer forever.

The fear in my heart wasn't of dying—

It was of never dying.

The elevator still worked.

Ding.

The doors opened—

Two monsters lunged at me.

"AHHH—!"

They tore me apart.

And I healed instantly.

I stabbed wildly—useless.

"…Coat your blade with Ether."

The command echoed in my mind.

Without thinking, Ether flowed into my knife.

I plunged it into one monster's throat.

The other, chewing on my leg, met the same fate.

I stood there, shaking, clothes shredded, pain still lingering even as my body fully healed.

The lobby was filled with corpses.

Outside, abandoned cars and mutilated bodies lined the streets.

"Looks like the monsters got them," I muttered.

I limped toward the nearby supermarket.

Double pain meant the agony lasted longer.

I filled a cart with food and dragged it back home.

By the time the pain finally faded, I was smiling.

Completely ignoring the fact that I had just been eaten alive—

And lived.
