Chapter 14 - The silent forest

The sun hadn't yet reached its zenith when Rael and his group left the village. At first glance, the path leading to the forest Eran had mentioned seemed ordinary, but the heavy atmosphere in the air left no doubt: something was wrong. The leaves rustled gently in the wind, yet the usual birdsong was strangely absent. It was as if nature itself was holding its breath.

Rael led the way, sword loosely gripped in hand, eyes scanning every shadowy movement. Blanek followed closely behind, hands clasped behind his back, appearing relaxed yet alert. Lyo examined the ground and the branches around him, every muscle tense, ready to react to the slightest anomaly. Selena moved silently, her sharp gaze sweeping the forest with near-mechanical precision.

The silence of the path was broken by a question, betraying the latent unease of young Lyo.

"Do you… have any idea what we might run into?" he asked, his voice barely audible but tinged with apprehension.

Rael shrugged, frowning slightly.

"I don't know… But I really don't think this is going to be easy. Something's off about this mission."

Blanek let out a dry laugh.

"Stop being so skeptical," he said, voice teasing but not entirely lacking seriousness.

"Sure… don't come complaining if I end up being right," Lyo replied, a faint shiver in his voice.

The group continued walking, leaves crunching under their feet. The air grew heavier as they neared the forest's edge. After a few hours, the trees began to crowd closer together, though surprisingly, the forest wasn't dense. Sunlight still filtered through the branches, casting shifting patterns on the ground.

"This is strange…" Selena murmured, frowning. "We haven't seen a single monster so far. There should be signs if anything happened to Eran."

Rael nodded.

"That's definitely odd. Normally, even a small patch of wilderness, monsters or animals alike, would leave traces. Not here."

A subtle tension settled over the group. None of them knew exactly what they were looking for, except that their leader had vanished here. The mission was frustratingly vague, and each of them felt it. After a brief exchange of glances, they decided to split up to cover more ground.

"Alright, let's do this properly. Two teams, each takes a side. If anyone finds anything suspicious, light a magic beacon, understood?" Selena explained, pulling four small glowing spheres from her satchel. She handed them out with precise, methodical gestures.

"Understood," said Rael. "We stay sharp."

"Okay," Lyo responded, voice firm despite his nervousness.

"Sure this won't end with us running into each other?" Blanek asked with a sly smile.

"It'll be fine. Meet back here in three hours," Selena added calmly.

The group split. Rael and Blanek took the path to the right, while Selena and Lyo delved into the forest on the left. Silence fell again, broken only by rustling leaves and measured footsteps.

Each pair moved cautiously, eyes scanning their surroundings with maximum focus. Rael felt his heart beat faster, not from fear, but from an odd sense of anticipation—a certainty that something was about to happen. Blanek walked as though the tension didn't touch him, but Rael noticed a glint of calculation in his eyes, a vigilance that his teasing grin never revealed.

Minutes passed in this wary rhythm. Lyo's fingers brushed the beacon at his belt, his gaze scanning trees and roots with mounting unease. Selena moved silently, eyes sharp with concentration. Even the wind seemed to bow to her presence, as if the forest itself acknowledged her.

Meanwhile, on a cliff overlooking the forest, a man stood motionless. His white hair, almost silver, fell in messy strands around his face, framing cold, piercing eyes. His white coat fluttered lightly in the wind as he observed the scene below with almost scientific precision.

He smiled, a faintly mocking curve of his lips, and let out a barely audible chuckle.

"Visitors… how interesting," he murmured.

His gaze shifted over the four adventurers as they scattered, analyzing their movements, predicting their choices before they even made them. There was something in his posture, in the slight tremor of his voice, that sent a chill down the spine. He wasn't just watching. He knew. He was waiting. And he was about to act.

Back on the ground, Rael and Blanek continued, moving through clearings and thickets. The branches creaked underfoot, yet no threat appeared. Blanek glanced at Rael.

"You seem tense," he murmured. "Stay calm. Danger never comes from where you expect it."

Rael nodded silently. His instincts screamed that the forest was abnormal. Even with no creatures in sight, the air felt charged, almost… alive, in a disquieting way.

On the other side, Selena and Lyo advanced through their section. Lyo felt his chest tighten each time his gaze caught an unusual tree or root. Selena, unshaken, continued scanning the surroundings.

"Everything seems… too quiet," Lyo murmured.

"Exactly," Selena confirmed. "That's how danger draws attention. This calm is artificial."

They pressed on until the light began to dim, shadows stretching and blending with the ground. Every step echoed louder than it should, as if the forest amplified their movements.

And on the cliff, the man with white hair kept smiling. His eyes followed every choice, every movement, like a player studying his pawns on a chessboard.

The wind carried his soft laugh to the forest floor, but the adventurers did not hear it. They were far from realizing that someone—or something—watched them from above. That their mission had only just begun.
