Chapter 30 - Memory stones and coins

The market was still bustling and a lot of people were calling out for wares and what they had.

The caravan was still there and attracting a lot of people who seemed to be interested in the various things they had.

"Aren't those exotic seasonings?"

"Look over there! That's fabric from across the continents."

"These things there are from the Empire. Their quality is guaranteed to be high."

Feyra looked over to them and wondered if they might have a knife she could use.

"Old customer! Come over here!", a man called out. Feyra looked over to him and noticed it was the leader who was waving her over.

"How have you been?", he asked her.

Feyra was smiling, "I've been well these past days. How about you? Did business go well?"

The leader nodded and looked over to the amount of people standing at their stalls.

"Hey! No cutting in line, woman! Stand behind us!", a man called out to Feyra, thinking she had cut the line.

"Aya... Young man she was called over by me. We are old acquaintances. The accusation you've made is wrong.", the leader said in defence of Feyra.

"Oh sorry. Didn't know that. My bad.", he said, before keeping his mouth shut and waiting further.

"People these days... Whatever... Is there anything you need?", the leader asked looking at Feyra. It was as though he could sense she had something on her mind.

"Do you have a knife I can use for cooking? I have some mushrooms but I couldn't eat them till now knowing I have to cut some parts off.", she answered and the leader of the caravan nodded.

"I think I have just the right thing for you." He disappeared behind a wagon they had to store wares. Not long after, he came back with a wooden box.

"This is a set. It includes two knives, two forks and two spoons. This would mean you have a spare too."

"How much is it?", Feyra asked being a little short on coins still.

"Let me see. It's only 3000 coins. You see this set came from the Southern continent, a desert. They have engraved this set with intricate designs which raised the price usually up to 6000 coins. Yet given we know each other I'll make a discount for you. We would've sold this at 4500 coins but for you it's only 3000 coins.", the leader said, putting the box on a table nearby and opening it to show Feyra the wares.

Indeed they had intricate designs on the handles and in the box was even a certificate of a master who had crafted them.

I don't think I need to think twice with this. After all I'll get coins later anyway.

Feyra counted her coins and put 3000 on the table. The man took them and counted before giving the set to Feyra.

"Thank you for your purchase.", he made a pause. "A standard sentence. In our business this is usual. Ah... I have forgotten to ask earlier but... What is your name?"

"My name is Feyra."

"What a lovely name. I'm Bob, leader of this caravan as you know. I'll put back some wares for you when I think you may be interested. What should I tell the letter pigeon when I want to write to you?"

"Just tell the pigeon to look for a peculiar traveler with leather armour, a chainmail skirt and a peculiar hair colour.", Feyra answered.

Bob nodded and noted it down before Feyra left. She still had more to do.

Having contacts isn't that bad and this caravan seems to have wares from around the world. This makes it even better.

"Sir? This woman just now... Why did you give her a discount?", a woman asked coming from one of the wagons.

"This woman is a Fallen Angel. Her hair colour betrays her... If she wished to hide it she would have no way to do so. Anyway... I suppose we'll meet again.", he answered to the woman who looked stunned.

"A Fallen Angel? Aren't they rare?"

"Yes they are rare. Consider it luck we could meet one.", Bob answered before turning around and disappearing into a wagon.

Feyra went away from the market and looked at the shop signs hoping she could find a person who may know a bit about stones.

A jeweler would be good. They often also sell Memory Stones.

She came near the book store halting for a moment. Feyra was wondering if she should go inside and look for a cookbook before she shook her head and decided to continue looking for a jeweler.

As she turned away from the book store she saw that across this store was a jeweler.

What a coincidence... You just need to turn around 180 degrees and there you have what you're looking for.

Feyra went over to the small shop and opened the door. A bell rang and the man inside looked up. He was already looking to be in his fifties. His arms were muscular and he wore an apron with marks on it.

"Hello.", Feyra said walking up to the counter. Inside the glass were a lot of rings and earrings made of gold and silver, inlaid with various stones.

Some were diamond, others ruby and some with green emeralds. On the shelves around the shop were some stones like amethyst, as well as a section dedicated solely to Memory Stones.

"Hello. What are you looking for?", the man said, looking at the woman in front of him, who looked around the shop.

"I have some stones here. Could I sell them here?"

"Depends on the stones you have. Let me check them.", the man said.

Feyra put out various stones she had found that could be used for jewelry before she finally put out the Memory Stone she had.

"Are those all?", the man asked looking at them for a while.

"Yes those are all."

He looked at each stone first turning them in the light before he looked at the Memory Stone.

His expression went from confused to enlightened and back to confused before it changed to stunned. In the end his expression changed again to awe and wonder before he put the stone down.

"You've got quite some good stuff on you. Where did you find those?"

"In a cave. I was looking for some herbs when I came across it."

The man seemed stunned. "How did you get them? From a wall?"

"No I collected them off the ground. I had nothing with me to take the stones from the wall. If I had been able to do so I would already have a fortune.", Feyra answered with a smile.

"From the ground? You're still lucky because they're worth a small fortune. The stones that I can use for jewelry I need to assess a bit more, but the Memory Stone... It's at least fourth grade if not even fifth grade. I'll look at them and then I'll calculate how much you'll get. Wait a moment here."

Feyra nodded and walked around the shop a bit, looking at the various rings, necklaces and earrings there were. Some of them also had onyx inlain and others had beryl.

On the shelf with the Memory Stones she paused for a while.

Tier 1 Grade 1... I wonder what these categories are... Further in the back are Tier 1 Grade 3 stones.

Feyra looked at it before she saw a signboard next to the shelf. It read:

The Tier of a Memory Stone shows the use it has. Tier 1 as such is an unused Memory Stone. Based on the Grade of the stone it can hold more memories or less. Some are for the use of remembering an art while others of higher Grades can also be used for human memory storage.

Tier 2 and 3 are used Memory Stones. Tier 2 describes that it was used for arts and other crafts while Tier 3 shows it has been used for human memories.

The higher the Tier the higher the entity it was used for. Only a few have ever witnessed red Memory Stones which could not be put into a Tier and these are considered Highest Tier and Highest Grade.

So that's how it is! That's quite interesting. The Tier basically tells the category or what it can be used for. The Grade shows how much or what can be stored in it. The higher the Grade the better it is for human memories.

Feyra was feeling enlightened before the man came back and looked at her. "Memory Stones are quite interesting. Though finding Tier 1 Highest Grade is impossible and buying them costs more than a fortune."

Feyra went over to the man looking at him. He seemed relaxed and eager to tell Feyra the results. "Where do these Highest Grade stones come from?"

"Highest Grade... They are from an area said to be extremely cold and in relation to none other than the Emperor of Memories. Getting your hands on such a Memory Stone is harder than finding a high Grade Memory Stone on the ground.", he hinted at the results and let Feyra know she should have some interest in that too.

"So how much could I get for these?"

"First and foremost... This Memory Stone is a Tier 1 Grade 5 Memory Stone. This is quite rare. They often go for 100.000 minimum. The archive and the government may even pay more. Which is why I need to talk to you about this.

"They may want to buy this specific stone and spend more than I'll give you. By law it is stated we come to an agreement about the profit of this stone. If one goes against this agreement they can be trialed for fraud and breaking the agreement.", the man said. Feyra looked confused before she had sorted everything in her mind.

"Let me make this short. You found the stone. I'll send you any profit I make from this. Meaning that I'll keep the 100.000 coins and everything above it goes to you. Meaning that what I gave you, I get back, and you get the extra.", the man said, confusing Feyra again.

So basically he gives me 100.000 coins for this stone which is already a fortune and once someone bought it he'll keep 100.000 coins and give me the rest of the profit.

She nodded and the man seemed to be pleased. "But... Why? Why not make it 50/50 of the extra profit?"

"I didn't find the stone and you look like a traveler. I'm a jeweler so I have a bit saved up. No need to worry. The government often buys Memory Stones here. I won't go bankrupt anytime soon.", he said, laughing.

Feyra now understood and agreed to it before they continued talking about the other stones.

"The other stones don't have all the highest purity but overall they aren't bad and can be used for various things. Some of them may actually be used... Let me make an example. This diamond here. That you found it in a cave is truly... Luck. I don't know how that is possible but let's put that aside. This diamond is of high purity and can help me cut other diamonds. Overall it has big value.", he said, and explained for every other stone the use too.

"In total I would give you 100.000 coins for the Memory Stone and 75.000 coins for all the other gems you've found. Making in total 175.000 coins. Deal?"

"Deal.", Feyra said having assessed the gems and stones beforehand too. She didn't expect to make such a fortune out of this but having heard the explanation she was understanding where it came from.

The man left for a back room and came back with two bags full of coins. One had 100.000 in it while the other had the 75.000.

"Before you can take them please sign here. This is our agreement about the profit. You'll also sign that you've received the money from me."

Feyra took out her pen, read shortly over the paper and signed with her name. Both nodded and smiled before Feyra took the bags.

Before she could even turn around the bell rang once again and a man in a suit entered the shop.
