Chapter 2 - The Birthday Gift

"Feast on your meal from the ground, that's where dogs like you should eat and be happy," he mocked and Mrs Judith joined him as they laughed uncontrollably. Ethan was furious as he clenched his fist in anger, ready to take out one eye of the rich bastard.

"Clean that place up now!" his mother-in-law commanded with power in her voice.

Ethan had no choice as he came back with tools to clean the floor, sweeping the broken pieces away. David watched with a smile but as Ethan turned to leave, he called again, this time, more commanding.

"Wait boy! Come fill my glass with wine," his command read, cold and daring.

Ethan reluctantly filled his glass and as David held it, he let it slip off his hand, shattering to pieces.

"Oops, my glass slipped off, refill my wine again and clean that up."

Ethan grew furious with anger as his eyes slowly turned red.

"Clean up your mess and fill your glass you spoiled brat!" Ethan muttered.

David stood and walked close to Ethan, their faces so close to each other.

"What did you say to me boy?" he asked calmly.

Ethan held tightly to the cutlery knife, ready to slit the brat's throat open, his anger slowly got the better of him as his body shook silently.

"Ethan, fill my glass cup with wine now and kiss my feet as an apology or I will make the remaining days of your wretched life more miserable and painful!" David Sinclair threatened as both men stared into each other's souls, their anger slowly growing into something purely dangerous and evil.

"Ethan, I will not repeat myself twice!" David warned as he clenched his fist in anger. Ethan stared into his soul without fear, but in the blink of an eye, he received a slap from Mrs Judith who couldn't tolerate the nonsense that brewed.

"How dare you match words with Lord David, you wretched fool, he can have you killed in a second!" Mrs Judith warned, her eyes flickering in anger as she spat in his eyes.

Ethan felt angered and ashamed as he cleaned up the mess and poured Lord David another glass of wine, his heart raced with anger. This wasn't who he was, he had been reduced to the bare minimum and he could do nothing about it. Ethan turned to leave when David's voice struck him like lightning.

"Tonight is your wife's birthday. I hope your wretched ass can get a beautiful gift for her. It would be a shame for everyone to attend and not see her weakling of a husband bring forth his gift." His voice broke into laughter, and Mrs Judith took pleasure in his speech as she laughed and sipped her wine graciously.

Ethan rushed to his room and banged the door hard. He had been humiliated by a spoiled brat but soon calmed his nerves as he set his eyes on the portrait of his beloved wife. "I have to make tonight memorable for you, my love," he muttered and quickly got dressed. The security guards laughed as they watched him leave in his ragged clothes. He looked so unkempt and tattered, but that was the least of his worries as he boarded a taxi to the biggest jewelry store in town, prepared to get his wife something as beautiful as her face.

"I love that masterpiece. A gold bracelet will surely be a perfect gift," Ethan muttered to himself as he stared at the masterpiece that had gotten hold of his heart in one good glance.

The workers stared at him and scoffed. He certainly didn't fit the status of one who could afford a ring, let alone a gold-made one, he fragrance evaporated poverty like an advertisement and his crutches giving the vibe of a begger.

"How can I help you, sir?" a tender voice asked as they watched him stare and touch the glass holding the masterpiece in place.

"I'm here to get a gift for my wife, and this will do. How much is it?" Ethan asked with a smile on his face. He hadn't been on good terms with his wife, and this was his way of setting things right, an act of love to win even the strongest heart.

"The price is $10,000 dollars," she replied with a smile.

Ethan sighed. It was too costly, way too costly but he wasn't ready to back down either. He had saved for months, worked under Mrs Judith's nose to earn a few bucks. He had lost everything after the accident, his accounts and wealth, all confiscated except for one account.

"Is there a discount?"

"I'm afraid there isn't one. That's the price, sir," the staff replied, her smile gradually degrading.

"I would love to speak to the manager," Ethan requested, his tone calm and appealing.

"And what do you need the manager for, sir?" a thick manly voice called from behind.

"I need to confirm the price of this gold bracelet. I want it, Mr Antonio," Ethan replied, calling the name tag at the top of his suit's pocket.

"It's $10k. If you can't afford it, I may need you to leave for other potential buyers. We don't negotiate here, and i must say that this is no place for wretched beggers" Mr Antonio warned, his tone cold and harsh.

Ethan's smile vanished in an instant. He was angered but remained calm as he walked out to make a withdrawal. All that was left after months of saving in his account was $8000, but he quickly took a loan with no idea on how he was going to repay. He sighed as he signed the loan terms, but the memory of his wife eased his tension, she was his beloved woman. Ethan went back to the store with the exact cash, and all the staff, including the manager, were stunned. How can a man dressed in tattered clothes be able to afford such an amount?

"Wrap up the bracelet for me now!" Ethan ordered, Mr Antonio had a smile on his lips as the staff quickly did as he ordered.

Ethan was served a glass of wine while he waited for his bracelet, but just as one of the staff walked towards him with his purchase in a company bag, Mr Antonio pulled her backward, pinning her to the wall.

"Sir, what's the issue?" she asked in shock as her brows furrowed.

"I don't trust that man. He appears to be a thief. How can a man like him afford such a bracelet? He might have robbed or killed to lay his hands on that cash!" Antonio expressed his displeasure.

"A receipt is being issued for Mr Ethan. He paid in full, and we surely can't deny him his purchase!"

"Then we give him a fake replica. A poor bastard like him wouldn't notice the difference," the manager smiled at his dubious plan while Ethan stood with no clue of the crime going down right under his nostrils.
