Chapter 8 - Chapter 8: Sneaking Around on a Phone

After becoming a cat,

Elysia finally understood that the term "night owl" was no exaggeration at all.

She had originally wanted to test whether what Kiyono Inori said was true, that as long as she fell asleep, she could return to her original world.

But no matter what she did, she just could not fall asleep. Curled up on the soft sofa, she felt wide awake, not a trace of drowsiness.

"Meow…?"

When the clock in the Kiyono household pointed exactly to midnight, a cat began pushing a stool around in a very sneaky manner. With disturbingly human-like movements, it climbed on top and opened the girl's bedroom door.

"Hey, why is it locked anyway?!"

"I am just a weak, pitiful, and helpless little kitty. I would not do anything bad, meow!"

Soft, adorable snoring drifted from inside the bedroom. The girl was sleeping deeply, completely at ease.

Elysia instinctively tried to lighten her steps.

Then she suddenly realized something. A cat's paw pads were soft and fluffy. Even if she walked boldly, there was no way she would wake someone who was sleeping this soundly.

And so,

on her very first day as a cat,

Elysia snuck into her temporary owner Kiyono Inori's room with questionable justification but plenty of confidence.

She tiptoed inside and saw the flaxen-haired girl hugging a long body pillow, her pretty face pressed into the corner of the blanket. Her lips were gently pursed, an unconscious, peaceful smile resting on her face.

"She is cuter when she is asleep, meow."

Elysia Cat stared at the girl's sleeping face and could not help muttering to herself.

They had not known each other for long.

When awake, Kiyono Inori smiled at her often too, but now that Elysia saw her like this, that smile seemed to carry a different meaning.

"Was she deliberately trying to make me like her?"

Elysia Cat licked her paw, quietly pondering Inori.

That smile did not feel as calculating as Mobius's.

It felt like she might have already known Elysia's human form before, and maybe… just maybe, she liked her a little.

Poke. Poke.

Elysia gently prodded the girl's cheek with the soft pads of her paw.

Honestly speaking, she still had no idea what the girl's goal was in summoning her to this other world and turning her into a cat.

But this girl was incredibly cute. Especially when she was asleep. Well-behaved, quiet, almost like a little kitten herself.

She kind of wanted to take her home and raise her.

First turn into a cat, then take someone home to raise. The pink pig-cat indulged in her own mischievous thoughts.

Kiyono Inori, sleeping soundly, showed no reaction at all and continued breathing steadily.

Elysia Cat actually really wanted to crawl into the girl's bed and see her shocked reaction.

But considering the girl's frail health, she gave up on the idea.

When the sleeping girl finally let out a small, uncomfortable hum from being poked too much, Elysia withdrew her paw and casually cast a Healing Spell, calming the girl and returning her to peaceful sleep.

"Ah, I really have zero resistance to cute kids like this."

The pink pig-cat puckered her little triangular cat mouth and began observing the bedroom.

It was big.

A wardrobe, a desk, a computer, and all kinds of figures, manga, and light novels she did not recognize. At a glance, Elysia spotted exactly what she was looking for.

The girl's phone.

It was sitting on the bedside table.

Elysia hopped straight onto it, stared at the password screen, and fell into deep thought.

Elysia was not a dumb pig-cat.

Since arriving in this unfamiliar world, she had been carefully observing everything. Even while slurping noodles earlier, she had been sneaking glances at Kiyono Inori's face.

And along the way,

purely by accident,

she had seen the phone password being entered. Completely accidental, of course.

606060

Unlocked successfully.

The phone entered the home screen.

"Oh my, I really am amazing, meow!" Elysia was extremely pleased with herself, even her meows sounding lighter and more cheerful. "Heehee, cute girls really are on the same wavelength!"

"Now then… let me see. Turn a cute girl into a cat, turn a cute girl into a cat."

After quickly familiarizing herself with the interface,

Elysia Cat opened the browser and searched for how to turn a cute girl into a cat.

She cared about this a lot.

If she could learn magic that turned cute girls into cats, then once she crossed back,

she could turn Mobius, Mobius, Mobius, all of them into cats! That would teach her not to wear pink dresses. Heehee.

Dream on, anything is possible in dreams.

You need a magic wand. Then shout "Henshin!" at your cat, and your cat will turn into a catgirl right in front of you.

Elysia Cat read through each result carefully. Just then, a new message popped up on Kiyono Inori's Line.

"Eekya★Donuts or Soda"

Elysia: "…"

That was a very long username. Since the avatar was a donut, the clever pink fairy decided to shorten it to Donut.

Donut: Inori Inori Inori Inori Inori-chan! Long time no see. My family said you went to Tokyo for school. Is that true?

Donut: [Shared link]

Donut: Look, our new song. Is not it super awesome? Hehe, before I knew it, your big sister has become a pretty famous idol.

Donut: I have some time recently. If you get the chance, I can take you around Tokyo.

Looking at these messages,

Elysia, who was well-versed in the subtleties of a girl's heart, understood the situation in a single second. This Donut was a friend from Inori's past.

From the tone alone,

it sounded like the type who treated Inori as a little sister. Also a popular idol, very enthusiastic and cheerful.

"Oh my, cute girls really are popular wherever they go, meow."

Elysia sighed with feeling.

As a considerate and well-behaved cat, she decided to pretend she had not seen anything. She would not reply and would leave the messages for Inori to answer herself tomorrow.

But clearly,

the newly arrived Elysia Cat had not realized that chat apps in this world showed read and unread statuses.

The messages she had already looked at,

from Donut's perspective,

were now all marked as read.

And friends familiar with Kiyono Inori all knew that her body was rather weak, so her daily routine was extremely regular.

Midnight.

Other high school girls might still be playing on their phones, but Kiyono Inori definitely would not be.

So,

just as Elysia Cat exited the chat, Donut sent another message.

Donut: Inori, are you not asleep?

Elysia Cat stared at the message, completely confused. She did not switch back right away and continued browsing pages about cat transformation magic instead.

Three minutes later,

Donut: Inori, nothing is wrong over there, right? I am a little worried.

Donut: If you see this and you are okay, please, please reply. I am really worried about you.

Eh.

Does this kid like Inori-chan or something?

Elysia, who was also extremely popular herself, had both received and sent similar messages before.

It was pretty common.

The whole "are you there" and "reply when you see this" routine, meant to spark a girl's curiosity and start a new conversation.

Elysia kept browsing the page and did not take it seriously.

More importantly, she could not reply.

If she replied, Kiyono Inori would definitely change her phone password the next day. Then Elysia would not be able to play with Inori's phone anymore.

Kiyono Inori had mentioned buying her a phone too, but the pink pig-cat felt that

she could not casually accept gifts from others unless she did something for them in return. Equality was the most important thing when making friends.

But…

What Elysia Cat did not expect was that the other side directly started a voice call.

A startled sound.

Music began playing.

"…!"

Still unaware that Far East apps had read receipts, Elysia Cat's pupils practically exploded as she snapped her head toward Kiyono Inori on the bed.

"Mm…"

The girl shifted slightly under the covers, seemingly affected by the ringtone.

This is bad!

If she got caught sneaking around on the phone!

If she got caught playing with the phone on her very first day at her temporary owner's house, she would definitely be labeled a bad kitty! That would not do, meow!

Elysia Cat's fur stood on end.

Right, silent mode. Phones like this usually had a silent button. As long as she pressed it, it would be fine. No matter what, she could not wake Inori-chan!

In her panic, Elysia Cat's paws moved faster than her brain, and she immediately pressed the button she remembered as the silent key.

On a MOTH device, this position meant mute.

But Elysia Cat was not in her original world anymore.

The result of pressing that button was…

The call connected.
