Chapter 16 - chapter 16(the cage)

The Gilded Cage

The air in the Chauhan mansion was heavy, smelling of expensive cologne and the cold, metallic scent of unspoken threats.

Samaira stood in the center of the study, her knuckles white as she gripped the back of a velvet chair. "No," she whispered, her voice trembling but sharp. "It's a simple word, Rajvardhan. No. I am not going, and I am certainly not going with you."

Rajvardhan didn't look up. He sat behind his mahogany desk, the rhythmic clack-thud of a crystal paperweight hitting the wood being the only sound in the room. He rotated the glass slowly, watching the light fracture across the walls like shards of ice.

"You seem to be under the impression that I am asking for your opinion," he said, his voice a low, dangerous velvet. "I'm not. You will stand, you will walk, and you will play your part. Do you understand what I've spent decades building? Or is that little head of yours truly that empty?"

"Let it be empty then!" Samaira fired back, a tear escaping. "If it means I'm not just another trophy on your shelf. Let me rot here. I'm not coming!"

"That is enough!" Seema stepped out from the shadows, her hands fluttering like trapped birds. "Raj, if she doesn't want to go, you are forcing a soul that—"

"Shut up, Seema." The command was a whip-crack. Rajvardhan finally looked up, his eyes flat and devoid of warmth. "Not another word. My patience is a resource you do not want to exhaust today." He turned his gaze back to Samaira, a thin, porcelain smile stretching his lips. "You are coming. And that is the final breath we will waste on this matter."

He reached for the desk phone, his fingers lingering on the receiver before dialing. Across the city, in a room draped in near-total darkness, a second phone vibrated.

"No, my sweet little daughter," Rajvardhan's voice shifted instantly into a soothing, hypnotic purr as the line connected. "You have to come to the party. If you don't... well, I might have to start begging. And we both know I hate to repeat myself."

On the other end, Priyanshi bit her lip, leaning into the warmth of his voice. "Okay, Uncle... I'll be there."

"That's my good girl. My sweet, obedient cutie," Rajvardhan murmured, his eyes locked on a photo of Priyanshi on his desk—one with a heavy red 'X' drawn through the background. "I'll be waiting... eagerly."

He hung up. The man on the other side of the line—a shadow in a room filled with whiteboards and surveillance photos—stroked his grey beard. He picked up a photo of Priyanshi from his desk, his thumb smudging her face.

"She's coming," the Shadow Man whispered into the speakerphone. "I know you're the one who can pull this off, Devraj."

"Don't thank me," Devraj's voice crackled back, cold and hollow. "It's a piece of cake. But your offers... they reminded me that she isn't my real blood. Just don't forget what you promised to give me in return."

The Shadow Man brought a cigar to his lips, the cherry-red glow illuminating a wicked grin. "I know, darling. I know. I remember what I promised right before you were going to announce that son of yours and that stupid girl Priyanshi's wedding. I was the one who changed your words at the podium, remember? I know the past. I know the promises. And I know exactly what I'm going to give you once the girl is delivered."

He blew a cloud of smoke at the whiteboard, obscuring Priyanshi's face in a grey shroud. The trap was set.
