Chapter 18 - Epilogue

Translator's Note: Keep in mind that this work is quite old. However, despite that fact, to this day this fanfic is considered one of the best, and not only in the Russian-speaking sector.

Residence of the Re-Estize Kingdom's ambassadorial delegation. Chambers assigned to Blue Rose.

"Lakyus, are you alright?" Gagaran asked her friend and leader with concern. "You've been acting... strange for half an hour now. Or did our handsome friend's gift affect you that much?"

"You... you don't understand... I don't understand! And yet I do! But this... this is just madness. It's impossible!"

"Do you two understand what's up with her?" the warrior asked the twins.

"Our tyrant boss is upset that everyone got powerful artifacts while she just got a flower," Tia suggested.

"Finally, just retribution has caught up with our demon leader!" Tina supported her sister.

"On the other hand, the number of compliments that necromancer showered on our priestess..." the warrior chuckled kindly. "So don't worry, friend, you can still compete for him with our Shorty, if, of course, you want to... participate in the 'sharing' and 'allies' business, heh-heh."

"No, that's not it... you don't understand!" the noblewoman clutched her head. "I used Appraisal on this gift, just like I did on yours! And if yours are simply Epic rank—items sung of through the ages—then... ugh..." Instead of answering, Lakyus simply transcribed the result the knowledge spell had revealed to her onto paper.

Name: The Unfading Blue Rose.

Type: Accessory, Slotted.

Rank: Divine.

Description: A magical flower created by the God of Death and Magic as a gift to the young priestess Lakyus Alvein Dale Aindra, as a sign of his favor.

Effects: Grants immunity to Death Magic. All undead up to the rank of Elder Lich inclusive cannot attack the owner of the accessory first. All undead up to the rank of Lich inclusive will obey the owner's commands. Facilitates spellcasting.

"Whaaat?!" the adventurers exhaled in unison after reading what was written.

"This... how is this possible?" Tia stammered.

"But... we saw Lord Zellos create it himself... oh..."

"Right..." the priestess closed her eyes, "we stay silent about this. But I think I'm starting to guess what Evi kept from us..."

"And what are we going to do? I mean, in the global perspective?"

"I don't know, Gagaran. I just don't know," the girl exhaled. "It's already clear that the world may soon face upheavals, but what kind will they be?"

End of Volume One. To be continued.

And a small author's afterword.

The author of Overlord managed to implement a very interesting idea—several, in fact.

First, the transport itself—not just into a fantasy world or a world based on a game, but into one's own game character, with all their powers and skills, as well as the coming-to-life of everything that until recently was just a set of pixels on a screen for the hero. After Overlord became popular, many started trying to use this idea, but Overlord remains one of its most successful implementations to date.

Secondly—and for us, the authors of this fanfic, this is the central idea of the entire original work—it reveals very well how a person's personality degrades and disintegrates under the influence of unlimited power and the physical nature of the body. It would seem that the question of degradation under the weight of circumstances or permissiveness has been explored by everyone and their mother, but when the role of the oppressive circumstances is played by one's own body, which stifles any emotions and the most basic empathy during communication—to my memory, no one before Overlord was able to do this fully, nor did they really try. And the most important point here is that Suzuki Satoru is not a closet scumbag whose real essence is simply suppressed by social norms; he is a good person, kind and decent, who doesn't want to become an asshole, doesn't desire permissiveness or the realization of some fetishes and secret desires. He is a truly good person. And this good person, right before our eyes, completely unnoticed by himself, without breakdowns, personality catharsis, or anything of the sort, turns more and more into a total piece of shit as the plot progresses. From a certain point, he begins to regularly and naturally commit absolutely inhuman acts without even thinking about alternatives, simply seeing no point in them. And the way the author was able to reveal this process, threading it throughout the entire work, already elevates Overlord far beyond the limits of ordinary fluff.

And the third point, which is especially important in light of the conclusion of the first volume of this fanfic. Within the framework of Overlord, it sounds like: "The main character is the cause of most of the world's problems." Yes, the cause of most of the original story's plot problems is either Momonga personally or Nazarick. Without Nazarick, there would be no Royal Capital arc, and no one would have kidnapped nearly a hundred thousand people with a heap of collateral victims and destruction. Without Momonga, there would be no Lizardman arc, the Workers from the Baharuth Empire arc wouldn't have happened, the massacre at the Katze Plains wouldn't have occurred, and so on. No one would have destroyed the Holy Kingdom either if Demiurge hadn't stuck his nose in there, and the list goes on. Situations that would have happened on their own, according to the world's logic and processes unrelated to the original hero's actions, are few and far between—at least those that truly threatened a significant part of the world are... well... few, to put it mildly. And from this, we have a simple conclusion: the hero of this fanfic has already saved the world. Simply by the fact of his arrival. This is regarding the action, "overcoming," and "conflict" that some alternatively gifted citizens regularly demand in the comments—those whose brains are incapable of realizing that a story can be not only readable but good even without the mandatory presence of some foul villain whose face needs to be punched to... assert oneself and... apparently, live peacefully thereafter like a normal human being. Well, some people are capable of that immediately. Meaning, living peacefully as a normal human being who has normal things to do. The meaning of life simply doesn't consist of punching someone in the face. It might be hard to accept, but... that happens too, yes. Surprise! If that's a surprise for anyone. But why am I saying this? Because in the next volume, there is plenty to write about. One can write a lot of interesting things there, and not necessarily constant smut, but don't expect "overcoming" and "conflict" expressed in its stupidest form—namely, the need to polish someone's face. Unless the original author suddenly throws some arch-epic super-enemies at Nazarick, we won't have them either. And if he does, then we'll see, but only if it's logical and not something like the Wandenreich arc in Bleach.

With that, allow me to take my leave. See you in Volume Two and our other projects. And thanks for all the fish... if only I knew what the fish had to do with it.

P.S.

To write further, we need information on Rubedo, Aureole Omega, three more of the five Area Guardians from the Five Worst, the second Adamantite team of the Re-Estize Kingdom, the Adamantite team of the Draconic Kingdom, the names of the members of the Black Scripture, and the truth about whether Rigrit is a Player or not. And that's just what comes to mind immediately and what is needed to describe a normal world reaction and the processes that will take place in it.

At the time of writing this fanfic, 14 volumes of the light novel have been released, and that information is NOT there. As you can guess, it's not in the anime or manga either. And it's not on various Wikis because the source material is the light novel, and it isn't finished. I made this clarification specifically for those to whom these things have to be explained in the comments for half a day. Such people do exist.

Another Translator's Note: Ahoy, friends!

Yes, this is the epilogue.

No, there is no sequel yet.

Will there be one? It's decidedly unclear. It's not that the authors stopped writing—they are writing actively—but specifically, they haven't touched Alignment at all.

Maybe there will be, maybe not soon, but we haven't lost hope. Maybe in the future I'll translate the second volume, anything can happen...

See you soon, stay healthy!
