Synopsis
The soul itself is responsible for its actions. No one else can take away or share the results of one’s deeds. Whatever actions a person performs—good or bad—he alone has to bear their consequences. Sinful actions bind the soul with karma. To free oneself from these karmic bonds, repentance, self-discipline, penance, restraint, and right conduct are essential. Without inner purification, external rituals alone cannot destroy sins. In Jain philosophy, confession (Alochana), repentance (Pratikraman), renunciation (Tyag), meditation (Dhyana), and penance (Tap) are considered powerful means to destroy accumulated sins. A person who sincerely repents and resolves not to repeat mistakes weakens the effect of sinful karma. By worshipping and remembering the Arihants, Siddhas, Acharyas, Upadhyayas, and Sadhus, one develops right faith and pure thoughts. When thoughts become pure, actions also become pure. The soul that follows truth, non-violence, self-control, and austerity gradually frees itself from the burden of past sins and moves toward liberation. True religion is not mere outward practice, but inner transformation. When the soul awakens, sinful tendencies naturally fall away.
