Chapter 64 - Chapter 64: Stolen Time (2)

She looked down at herself, then back at me, a faint blush rising high on her cheeks. She smoothed the fabric over her hips, a nervous gesture. "Well?" she asked, her voice soft, a hint of genuine uncertainty in her tone. "Is it... is it too much? It feels... very different."

I felt a genuine grin spread across my face. "Too much?" I countered, taking a slow step closer, my eyes never leaving hers. "Meira Su, you are a vision that could launch a thousand fleets. 'Too much' is an understatement. You are devastating. You are unfair. You make the moon look jealous."

Her blush deepened, and she let out a soft laugh, swatting playfully at my arm. "You flatterer! You lie so easily."

"I speak only the absolute truth," I insisted, my voice dropping to a teasing murmur. I circled her slowly, admiring the way the Midnight Silk flowed with her every movement.

She looked down at herself, then back at me, her eyes shining like twin stars. "Thank you," she breathed, her voice thick with emotion. "I... I love it. It's truly beautiful."

"Good," I said, my own smile softening. I reached out, my hand gently cupping her chin. "Now, as tempting as it is to just admire my handiwork all morning, we should probably get you home before I decide to lock the door and keep you here forever."

Her eyes widened in mock horror. "You wouldn't dare."

"Try me," I challenged, a low growl rumbling in my chest. "I'm the villain, remember? Villains are famously possessive of their treasures."

She laughed, a delightful sound. "And I am a treasure that bites. You wouldn't want to get bitten by your own fiancée, would you?"

"Depends on where you bite," I murmured, leaning in, my voice dropping to a seductive whisper. "Some bites are quite... enjoyable."

She blushed, a furious wave of crimson that spread across her cheeks. She playfully shoved my chest. "Shameless! We need to dress."

We finished dressing quickly, the atmosphere still thick with playful tension. I helped her with her outer robes, the heavy azure silk sliding over the Midnight dress. My hands lingered at her waist, enjoying the brief contact. She, in turn, adjusted the collar of my crimson and gold formal robes, her fingers brushing against my chest.

"There," she said, her hands smoothing the fabric over my shoulders, her gaze lingering on my face. "Perfect. A handsome Young Master, ready to face the day."

I caught her hands, preventing them from moving away. My eyes were now burning with a possessive fire I made no attempt to hide. "You know," I began, my voice serious, "that dress... the Midnight Silk. It makes you look impossibly beautiful."

Her eyes met mine, and I saw a question forming in their depths.

"I am jealous, Meira," I confessed, the words honest. "I don't want anyone else to see you looking like that. That kind of beauty... it's too much for the world. It's a secret. My secret." I tightened my grip on her hands. "Promise me. Promise me you will only dress in that... for me to see. I don't want anyone else to be so captivated by my wife. It is my right, and my right alone."

An understanding smile touched her lips. There was no offense in her eyes, only a mirrored possessiveness. She leaned in, her lips brushing my ear, sending a shiver down my spine.

"Foolish Arya," she whispered, her voice laced with amusement and deep affection. "Did you truly think I would wear such a dress for anyone else? This side of me, this joy, this... wildness... it is only for you. My beauty, my heart, my very soul... they are yours, and yours alone. I promise."

Her words were a balm to the possessive beast within me. I pulled her into a tight hug, burying my face in her hair. "Good," I growled, a satisfied sound. "Because if you even looked at another man while wearing that, I might just burn down the entire city."

She laughed, a warm sound that vibrated against my chest. "My protective brute. Come. It's time."

"Ready?" I asked.

"Ready," she said.

We slipped out of my courtyard, moving like shadows. The estate was still quiet, the morning mist clinging to the ground. We reached the rear gate where she had left her horse. It was a sturdy black stallion, currently munching on a patch of spirit grass.

"One horse," I noted.

"I didn't exactly plan for a passenger," she said dryly.

"Perfect," I grinned.

I swung myself into the saddle, settling the horse. Then I reached down. "My lady?"

She took my hand and swung up behind me, wrapping her arms around my waist. "This is undignified for a Young Master," she muttered against my back.

"It's romantic," I corrected, kicking the horse into a gentle trot. "Hold on tight."

We rode out of the estate and into the city. The streets of Clearwater City were empty, bathed in the gray light of pre-dawn. The rhythmic clop-clop-clop of the hooves echoed off the stone buildings.

Because flying was forbidden within the city walls to prevent aerial collisions and maintain the privacy of the high-rise pavilions, we were forced to take the long way. I was grateful for every inch of pavement.

I could feel her body pressed against my back, the warmth of her chest and the grip of her arms. She rested her head on my shoulder, her breath warming my neck.

"It's quiet," she said softly.

"The calm before the storm," I replied, keeping my voice low. "Jin Hao is out there somewhere. Eating rocks."

She snorted. "He really is eating rocks?"

"Ore," I corrected. "But essentially, yes. He's a termite with a cultivation base."

"We will stop him," she said, her arms tightening around me. "We have an alliance. We have... us."

"We do," I agreed. I took one hand off the reins and covered her hands clasped at my waist. "And we have this dress. If we send you to fight him wearing this, he might just surrender out of sheer awe."

"Stop it," she murmured, but I could hear the smile in her voice.

We rode in silence for a while, passing the shuttered storefronts of the merchant district. The city felt peaceful, unaware of the currents shifting beneath its surface.

"Arya?"

"Yes?"

"Last night..." she hesitated. "Did you mean what you said? About... the future?"

"Every word," I said instantly. "I don't just want to survive, Meira. I want to build a place where we don't have to look over our shoulders."

"A place where we can sleep in," she added wistfully.

"Exactly," I laughed. "A place with very strict 'Do Not Disturb' signs."

We reached the outer perimeter of the Su Family estate far too quickly. The high walls loomed out of the mist. I slowed the horse to a walk, guiding it toward a secluded side entrance that Meira indicated.

I stopped the horse in the shadow of an ancient elm tree.

"We're here," I said, the words heavy with reluctance.

"We are," she whispered.

Neither of us moved.

"You should go," I said. "Before the sun rises fully."

"I know," she said.

Still, we didn't move.

Finally, she sighed and slid off the back of the horse, landing lightly on the ground. She smoothed the Midnight Silk dress, looking up at me.

I swung down beside her. We stood in the alley, the horse huffing clouds of steam beside us.

"Thank you," she said. "For the dress. For the escort. For... everything."

"You don't need to thank me," I said, stepping closer. "I am just investing in my future happiness."

She smiled, a sad expression. "I hate this part. Leaving."

"It's not leaving," I said, reaching out to cup her face. "It's just... pausing. We will hit resume tomorrow."

"Tomorrow," she agreed.

I lowered my head and kissed her. It was a goodbye kiss, filled with the promise of return. It was full of the reluctance we both felt.

"Go," I whispered against her lips. "Before I kidnap you."

She laughed softly and stepped back. "Goodnight, Arya. Or... good morning."

"Good morning, Meira."

She turned and slipped through the small side gate, vanishing into the Su estate. I stood there, watching the wooden door long after it had clicked shut.

The silence of the morning rushed back in, colder now that she was gone.

I mounted the horse again, turning it back toward the Chen estate. The ride back was lonely, the city feeling larger and emptier than before.
