Chapter 13 - Partners in The Lower Steps.

The Inner Court entered a state of quiet tension after the announcement of the Grade Tourney.

No banners were raised.

No drums were beaten.

Instead, cultivation halls filled to capacity, training grounds echoed with controlled clashes, and the marketplace of the Inner Court grew livelier than it had been in years.

Preparation had begun.

Chen Yuan and Gu Wen registered their duo at the Inner Court Pavilion.

A thin, jade-skinned slip recorded their names.

Duo Registration:

Chen Yuan — Inner Disciple (Unranked)

Gu Wen — Inner Disciple (Rank 92)

Status: Confirmed

The attendant barely glanced at them.

A low-ranked duo.

Unremarkable.

Chen Yuan felt no offense.

This was exactly where he preferred to stand.

Their first obstacle appeared immediately.

"Training quotas for Grade Tourney participants will be adjusted," an administrator announced. "Only registered duos may access enhanced facilities."

That afternoon, Chen Yuan stepped into a Tier-Two Cultivation Room for the first time.

The moment the doors sealed, dense spiritual energy flooded the chamber.

His meridians reacted instantly.

Pain flared.

He clenched his jaw and sat down.

Gu Wen exhaled slowly beside him. "Don't force it. Inner Court qi isn't forgiving."

Chen Yuan nodded.

The system activated quietly.

Environmental Synchronization Active

Strain Level: Moderate

Adaptation in Progress

For the first time since entering the Inner Court, Chen Yuan felt genuine pressure during cultivation.

But it was controlled.

Measured.

Days passed.

Their routine stabilized.

Morning physical refinement.

Midday cultivation.

Evening sparring—never full force.

Gu Wen proved exactly what he had claimed.

Not explosive.

Not overwhelming.

But reliable.

His footwork was precise, his timing sharp. He specialized in defensive counter-strikes and formation awareness.

"You're built for duos," Chen Yuan said after one session.

Gu Wen chuckled. "Had to survive somehow."

They were not alone in preparing.

From a distance, Chen Yuan observed other duos.

Some radiated overwhelming confidence—two geniuses paired together, their auras sharp and aggressive.

Others were mismatched, already showing cracks.

He saw one duo arguing openly in the training yard.

They would not last.

Trouble arrived in a familiar form.

"Chen Yuan."

The voice was mocking, smooth.

Zhao Ming.

He stood with two inner disciples at his side—both clearly stronger than him, both wearing amused expressions.

"So this is your partner?" Zhao Ming said, eyes flicking to Gu Wen. "Rank Ninety-Two. How inspiring."

Gu Wen stiffened but said nothing.

Chen Yuan's gaze remained calm.

"You've already lost face," Zhao Ming continued. "Now you plan to lose the tourney too?"

Chen Yuan replied evenly, "If you have something useful to say, say it."

Zhao Ming's smile thinned.

"You should withdraw," he said quietly. "Low-ranked duos tend to… disappear during the Grade Tourney."

A threat.

Open.

Crude.

Gu Wen's fingers twitched.

Chen Yuan stepped half a pace forward.

"We'll take our chances," he said.

Zhao Ming laughed softly. "Then don't say I didn't warn you."

As he turned away, Chen Yuan caught something else.

Zhao Ming was not confident.

He was anxious.

He's afraid of losing position, Chen Yuan realized.

That night, the system interface appeared again.

Duo Combat Simulation Available

Cost: Minimal Physical Strain

Frequency: Limited

Chen Yuan opened his eyes.

"Simulations?"

Gu Wen looked over from his mat. "What is it?"

"A method to train coordination," Chen Yuan said after a pause. "Low risk. High return."

Gu Wen grinned. "Now that sounds like my kind of training."

The simulations were brutal in their own way.

Endless scenarios.

Ambushes.

Resource fights.

Terrain disadvantages.

They lost often.

But each failure refined something.

Timing.

Trust.

Positioning.

The system did not reward them with power.

It rewarded them with understanding.

At the end of the week, Chen Yuan felt it.

A subtle shift.

His cultivation did not advance a full layer.

But it stabilized.

His qi flowed smoother.

His movements wasted less effort.

The system confirmed it.

Progress Update:

Foundation Stability: Improved

Duo Synergy: Rising

Chen Yuan exhaled.

This was the typical path.

Slow.

Uncelebrated.

But real.

Outside, the Inner Court lights burned late into the night.

The Grade Tourney drew closer.

And on the lower steps of the staircase, two cultivators prepared—not to leap.

But to endure.

And endure long enough to climb.
