Chapter 23 - Returning To One's Place

The seventh match was announced the following day.

No delay.

No mercy.

But something had changed.

Chen Yuan and Gu Wen did not stand side by side in silence this time.

Gu Wen spoke first.

"I'll stop trying to keep up," he said quietly. "I'll do what I'm good at."

Chen Yuan nodded. "Then I'll stop compensating for imaginary gaps."

They both understood what that meant.

Trust was no longer emotional.

It was structural.

Arena Two.

Near the top of the Grade Tourney.

Few seats were empty now.

Liu Han & Qiao Sheng

Duo Rank: Twelve

A pressure-type duo.

Liu Han's qi was thick and heavy, clearly Foundation Establishment — Mid Stage. Qiao Sheng moved lightly, aura sharp, specialized in burst assaults.

Gu Wen exhaled slowly.

"This is my kind of fight."

Chen Yuan looked at him once. "Then anchor us."

The formation activated.

Qiao Sheng struck first—fast, vicious, blade flashing toward Chen Yuan's throat.

Chen Yuan did not retreat.

He shifted sideways.

Gu Wen stepped in.

Perfect timing.

His defensive technique unfolded fully—stance wide, qi sunk deep.

The strike landed.

And stopped.

The sound echoed like metal against stone.

Qiao Sheng's eyes widened.

Liu Han advanced, pressure rolling outward.

Chen Yuan felt the weight—but this time, he did not resist it alone.

Gu Wen absorbed the first wave.

Not completely.

But enough.

Chen Yuan moved freely.

The system pulsed—not urgently, but in rhythm.

Duo Synchronization: Restored

Chen Yuan struck decisively.

Not many times.

Not aggressively.

Each blow landed where Liu Han had to respond.

For the first time in the fight, Liu Han was forced to react.

Qiao Sheng disengaged and tried to reposition.

Gu Wen followed.

He did not chase.

He blocked paths.

Every angle Qiao Sheng attempted was cut off.

Every burst was smothered.

Frustration built.

Qiao Sheng overextended.

Chen Yuan saw it instantly.

"Now."

Gu Wen slammed his heel down—full force this time.

The vibration traveled through the stone and into Qiao Sheng's footing.

Balance shattered.

Chen Yuan was already there.

One strike.

Clean.

The formation flared.

Qiao Sheng — Incapacitated

Liu Han roared and surged forward, abandoning defense.

Chen Yuan met him head-on.

This time—

He did not give ground.

He redirected.

Compressed.

Returned.

Liu Han staggered.

Gu Wen stepped in and struck once—short, brutal, perfectly placed.

The formation activated.

Match Complete

Victory: Chen Yuan & Gu Wen

The arena did not erupt.

It acknowledged.

"That was coordination."

"They fixed the flaw."

"They adapted as a duo—not individuals."

Gu Wen exhaled heavily, then laughed.

"That's more like it."

Chen Yuan nodded.

Inside, the mutation settled again—not growing, but stabilizing.

Mutation State:

Integrated

Non-Disruptive

As they left the arena, Chen Yuan felt a familiar gaze.

Lin Xue stood at the edge of the upper seating.

Beside her was her partner—the tall woman with calm eyes.

Their names glowed briefly on a jade screen nearby.

They had advanced.

Their paths converged.

Lin Xue inclined her head slightly.

Not as greeting.

As acknowledgment.

Chen Yuan returned it.

No words were exchanged.

They were unnecessary.

One match remained before the end.

One step before the summit of Volume I: Mutation.

And the staircase narrowed—

To the width of a single confrontation.
