Translation: The Unexpected Guest

"—This neighborhood is so quiet," Chris said as he helped me carry the platter from the car.

"—Yeah, absolutely nothing has changed around here," I replied as we headed to the door. We rang the bell, and a moment later, my mother opened it.

"—You're late! This was supposed to be lunch, not a snack," she started right away with a lecture.

"—Mrs. Smiths, it's a pleasure to see you," Chris said, greeting my mother. She accepted the greeting with a smile and then looked at me.

"—Don't you think this dress is a bit too short for your age, Theoany?"

"—I'm fine, thanks Mom. It's always wonderful to see you worrying about me," I said sarcastically.

"—Respect, girl!" she snapped as I brushed past her and was met with a warm hug from my nieces, Grace and Kim.

"—Auntieeee!" they screamed.

"—Heiiiiii," I said, leaning down to hug them back just as hard, before they went to greet Chris and Lia.

When I reached the other side of the house, I saw my Nana and headed toward her.

"—May this date repeat for many long and wonderful years of life," I said, giving her a tight hug.

"—Thank you so much, Theo. I have great faith that it will."

"—The house looks wonderful. I haven't been in such a chic and glamorous environment in ages," I remarked.

"—Look at that, my granddaughter being my granddaughter," she said, and I gave a bow. "—And Chace?"

"—Chace... He isn't coming this time, Nana."

"—Strange that he didn't say anything."

I reflected on that phrase, and just as I was about to ask what she meant, Lia and Chris came over to congratulate Nana, and my cousins suddenly appeared in front of me.

"—Hello, doll!" Mary said with a hug.

"—Hellooo," I replied, returning both of their greetings.

"—Wow, this dress is definitely you. I want the reference," Star said.

"—Sure. Comical as always," I replied sarcastically.

"—That's your big problem, Theo; you never believe what I say," she said with fake sadness.

"—And I wonder why, my God?"

"—Oh, stop it, okay.... Where's Chace, Theo?"

"—Living his life," I said simply, and both of them looked at me, shocked.

"—You guys broke up?!" they said in unison.

I couldn't even answer because I was lifted from behind and hugged.

"—Please, put me down, Owen!" I said after the scare.

"—The babe grew up," Eyal said as he hugged me once my feet hit the ground.

"—Look who's talking.... I practically lost my breath seeing this unknown dark-haired, blue-eyed guy so close to me," I teased back.

"—My God, where's the respect?" he said with mock indignation.

"—The same respect you gave me?"

"—Oh no, just when she was about to answer if she broke up with Chace or not, you guys had to show up," Star complained.

"—Weren't you two supposed to stop being gossips this summer?" Eyal asked with obvious sarcasm, rolling his eyes.

"—We're cousins, we have to know everything. Family first!" Star shot back.

"—Right, I'm sure it's 'gossip first.'"

Eyal being Eyal.... Who doesn't have a cousin like that?

"—Seriously? You broke up?" Owen asked over the angry voices of my cousins.

"—Yes," I said casually.

"—Oh, big deal," Eyal cursed.

"—What is it?" I asked, and was immediately answered when I looked at the door and a perfectly dressed Chace appeared.

They have to be kidding me.

"—I don't think I understand." I looked at Owen, irritated.

"—Well... I might have invited Chace? Because Nana asked?" he said without even looking at me.

"—And you guys didn't even tell me?!"

"—We weren't going to guess that you broke up. If it weren't for the busybodies, we wouldn't even know," Eyal said, getting pinched right after.

"—Forget it, he's already here, nothing to be done," I said, heading toward Tommy who was near my uncles. I wanted to stay as far away from Chace as possible. It's not childishness, but usually, when you break up with someone, you don't want to see them again so soon—or ever.

"—Who is my hottest cousin running away from?" Tommy asked when I sat down next to him.

"—Hiding? Can't I just spend quality time with my bro, my Tommy, anymore?" I tried, but I failed; I'm terrible at this.

"—Quality time? What, did you memorize that, Theo?" he said, smiling.

"—I just want to stay here," I said, sitting by him with my back to the door, where I saw Chace pass by minutes later.

"—Don't you think you're adult enough to stop running from your problems, Theo?"

"—You quit working at Lyons because of your ex," I said accusingly.

"—She wasn't a problem."

"—Chace isn't either."

"—So it is Chace we're talking about.... Honestly, I thought it was Mary and Star."

"—Not today."

"—What did he do? Tell me, your brother is here to fix everything."

"—We broke up a few weeks ago, nothing major."

"—It's good you think that way, 'nothing major.'"

"—And how are things now... with Tyna?" I asked, looking back at the entrance, but Chace was no longer there.

"—Tyna... well... You know when you give yourself heart and soul to a relationship?" He looked at me indifferently. "—I simply ignored or preferred to pretend I wasn't seeing the mistakes, the flaws, the lack of consideration, the lack of attention, well... the lack of everything." He laughed. "—I even came to believe she was the culprit for every wrong thing that happened in my life," he huffed in disgust. "—But no, it wasn't her. I had the responsibility to decide between dying in agony or continuing to live, and I chose to continue... only now, out of nowhere, she realized she was a total bitch and won't leave me alone. It doesn't even make sense."

"—I don't get it either. I really never liked her, but what I think shouldn't change how you feel," I said, shrugging.

"—I like Chace. He's a good guy. And I always thought he really liked you."
