Chapter 3 - Chapter 3 — Rejects

[Welcome Team Leader Yuki]

Yuki stared at her system screen through her half lidded eyes. Her head laid lazily on top of a wooden desk, behind her a scene of a lively city can be seen through a window, expanding from the floor to the ceiling.

Yuki grunts, a defeated tone filled her own voice.

"Ughhhh..." Her voice muffled, her mouth pressed on top of the desk. "That bastard set me up."

She had learnt something after her assistant, Jin Hee, gave her a rundown of the whole thing.

"Though, I'd argue if it can even be called a rundown." Yuki recalled the discussion she had earlier.

"Knock, knock" Two knocks sounded at her door. Yuki was startled, she had just been inside the room.

"Knock knock." The knock sounded again, faster now. Yuki quickly got to the door. She opened it slightly.

However, the person behind the door couldn't wait. They pushed the door open, causing Yuki to stagger backward. The system pinged as the woman steps closer towards her.

[Team Member, Bureau Clerk Jin Hee]

Entering the room was a woman in her late twenties, the epitome of neat office poise. She wore slim black-framed glasses, her long dark hair swept into a tidy low ponytail. She was dressed in a crisp white collared shirt underneath a crisp black blazer and a knee-length black pencil skirt.

As soon as she entered, her eyes gave a stern look toward Yuki.

"So, you're the new leader of our team?" Jin Hee questioned. Her eyes darted, sizing Yuki up. She sighed before quickly put a stack of paper onto Yuki's desk. As soon as she did that, her gaze immediately snap towards Yuki. Her sharp eyes squint just a little before she spoke.

"I'm going to be honest, you are not going to last in this team." A brief tensed silence filled the room as her word left her mouth.

"W— Wait, is that what you're supposed to say to your new leader?" Yuki protested. Somehow, she felt somewhat insulted.

"No, I'm saying it because even veteran leader can't handle this team. Let alone a rookie like you." Jin Hee continued, her finger poked Yuki's chest.

"I don't know which bastard set you up like this, but I'm going to have a talk with him later."

"But, since you're here already, I'll give you an idea of what we're doing here. We are called Soul Reapers as labeled by your system." Jin Hee paused, letting her word fester in Yuki's mind before she continue.

"What that means is that we are the janitor of the death realm. Our job is to exterminate any dead souls that escape the system. Copy that?"

Yuki nodded. She's still haven't understand it fully, but she got the gist of it.

"Our team consisted of eleven members total, which includes you. Which is the lowest count out of every team."

"What? How many are there usually?"

"The second lowest team had a size of over two hundred Soul Reaper's." Jin Hee finished explaining.

"That's easy then, I just have to manage eleven members?" Yuki smiled. Jin Hee slammed her hand onto the table, her face got close to Yuki's.

"You don't get it, do you? Our team is essentially the problematic group, the group consist of rejects where no other groups accepted." Jin Hee explained.

"Then that means you as well?" Yuki smiled innocently.

"Yes, so don't interrupt me or I'll punch you in the face." Yuki instantly nodded quickly to the threat. Jin hee sighed.

"Anyway, while our team's are rejects, each of our member are strong. Well, except me."

"Ah, so you're the worst even in the worst team." Yuki smirk.

*Bonk*

"It's because I'm the one who did the paperwork. I don't fight. Anyway, do you got that?" Yuki nodded, she rubbed the painful bump on her head. She now knows why Jin Hee were here too.

"You'll meet the member eventually. Each time a new team leader was assigned, they would get notified. Some won't be interested but some... Well, you'll meet them anyway."

"Ah, those documents? You have to fill them okay? Make sure to do it!"

And then, she left. Leaving Yuki with a towering stacks of papers.

"Ughhhhhhh....." Yuki grumbled as she recalled her conversation with Jin Hee. It's been several hours now, she was still alone in her office, surrounded by papers and pens.

Sometimes, she spin the chair around out of boredom. Then, she would looked at the big window behind her.

From where she is, she can see the bird view of a bustling city.

Road sprawling all over with a couple car speeding right through from people's recollections. Those that doesn't have a vehicle walk along the sidewalk. Neon signs of store fronts brighten up the night of the city.

The lively nature of the city betrayed it's nature.

Yuki was about to turn around before she felt the sensation of cold steel biting on her neck. Her body instantly froze.

"Don't move." Her assailant spoke. Yuki take a big gulp. Her mind raced with multiple thoughts at once.

Who is this? Why are they here? Are they going to hurt her? What if she dies? Can she dies? Are they one of her team members? Who are they?

Her thought become jumbled, however, spinning, weighting her mind. She needed to calmed down. She take a deep breath, trying to focus. As soon as she calmed down, a singular thought shone right through.

"I must escape"

She summoned her knife and kick the floor hard, flipping the chair. Gravity brought both of them down to the floor. Her assailant manage to roll away, gaining distance and avoid being crushed underneath the office chair.

Yuki got up from her seat and immediately dashed forward, knife in her hand gripped tightly. She swung.

It slices air, her assailant had already ducked down. They kicked her leg, her unstable posture caused her to stumble backward.

She caught herself with a roll. However, her assailant were faster.

A knee to her abdomen sent her to the ground.

Yuki groaned in pain, however, she's not finished yet. She threw her black knife, the assassin dodged it with ease.

[Snow White]

She called upon her knife once again, the knife appeared in her hand. She thrust forward.

However, her hand were caught instead. Then, a twist, causing her to scream and drop her knife.

They then grabbed her over their shoulder and slammed her down to the floor.

"Fu—" She wanted to curse but her assailant had already dragged her body towards across the floor.

Then, her body were slammed towards the window. It shattered upon impact.

Biting wind of the night stung her skin. Her body struggled as it clung onto the man's hand. Her foot barely touched the ground, or more precisely, the window frame.

"Who are you?!" She shouted. Finally getting a good look at her assailant. It was a man in his twenties. Lanky figure, deep red hair, tan skin hiding behind a hooded robe. He was holding her by her neck with just a single hand, her back was nothing but a long way down.

"Should I really tell my name to a dead body?" He sneered. Yuki gritted her teeth. Her mind wanted to scream millions of questions, but right now, only one thought is clear.

"Oh really? I guess there's no reason for a dead man to have a name then." She swung her body upwards. Her leg caught onto the man's arm and interlocked it. The man seemed shocked— However, Yuki doesn't let him process it. She jerked her body outward, the man lost his footing and began to fall with her.

"This crazy bi—" The man cursed as his feet left the floor into the height. Both of them dove straight down the building, into the cold pavement.

In the ever-lasting night, moonlight shone onto a set of golden hair, it glows in ethereal light. The golden hair dove down fast towards the falling victims.

"Are the two of you crazy? What are you doing?" A sultry voice cuts in, nagging them both. Warm hand caught her body, and soon, their fall turn into one of an ascend.

Yuki looked up, her eyes widen. It is as if an angel had descended down to help her. As the angel turned to look at her, she flashes a bright smile towards Yuki.

"Hi, Leader, I'm Juliette, welcome to the team!"
