Chapter 5 - ¹chapter 5

Weeks passed since Viktor had put together his team. The atmosphere was tense yet hopeful, as they all wanted to prove themselves. Viktor tested them relentlessly, assigning smaller deals to see how well they could work together under pressure. Day by day, they became more confident in their abilities and in each other. Slowly, Viktor began to warm up to them. One night, after a long week of work, Viktor invited them to his penthouse for a celebration. The dim lights and expensive décor of the room made it feel more like a scene from a movie than their everyday lives. As they sipped whiskey, a rare smile broke out on Viktor's usually serious face. You've earned it, he said, raising his glass. Lead this shipment to Mali. Big guns, big payoff. Ethan, Lydia, Mason, Allison, and Liam exchanged glances, a mix of excitement and fear swirling within them. This was it. Their chance to prove they were more than just players on a board. They had been waiting for a moment like this, and now it seemed closer than ever. Viktor handed each of them the manifests, routes, and GPS coordinates, making sure to explain everything carefully. Make sure it's smooth. I trust you guys, Viktor concluded, looking each of them in the eye, sealing their agreement without any words. The weight of his trust felt heavy upon them, but it also filled them with courage. As they prepared for the mission, Agent Harry called them, his reputation as a skilled informant preceding him. He had the connections needed for the operation. I have intel, he said, serious and focused. Local police have agreed to stand down for the night. You'll have a clear path through Lagos. The weight of Agent Harry's words settled over the team. They knew how critical this information was. The streets of Lagos could be dangerous, filled with the unexpected. They breathed a little easier, feeling both gratitude and the anxiety that came with their task. The night of the shipment arrived. The team had planned every detail, but still, there was nervous energy in the air. Ethan was the driver, with Lydia navigating. Mason checked the cargo one last time, ensuring everything was in place. Allison and Liam kept an eye on their surroundings, alert and ready for anything. As they drove through the bustling streets of Lagos, the glow of streetlights reflected off the walls of nearby buildings. People moved busily about, but the convoy grew quieter as they approached the outskirts of the city. The world around them turned from crowded and chaotic to dark and ominous. They all felt the shift, a tightening in their stomachs. Stay focused, Ethan reminded everyone, eyes straight ahead as he maneuvered the vehicle with skilled ease. Lydia kept her gaze fixed on the GPS, tracking their route carefully. Each turn felt heavy with rumor and risk. The team was acutely aware of every bump, every sound that came from the dark shadows of the night. Suddenly, just as they thought they were clear, a figure stepped into the road ahead. Ethan slammed on the brakes, adrenaline spiking through the group. The figure was a local who looked lost and confused. Hey, you need help? he shouted, waving his hands in the air. Keep moving, Lydia urged while the rest of the team exchanged worried looks. But the man stepped closer, and without thinking, Ethan rolled down the window. We're okay, just passing through, he said, trying to keep them all calm. The man's eyes flickered with recognition. "You shouldn't be here. You need to turn around. There are people—" Before he could finish, a loud crash sounded behind them. A car had barreled down the street, swerving toward them. Panic seized the group, and without hesitation, Ethan hit the gas. The convoy took off, the streets becoming a blur of light and shadow. Allison looked back, her heart racing. "They're following us!" she yelled, her voice high with fear. "What do we do? We can't let them catch us!" "Just focus on getting out of the city!" Mason urged. "We can figure it out later!" With the car hot on their tail, they took sharp turns, desperately hoping to lose their pursuers. The streets wound wildly, each twist leading them deeper into the unknown. Finally, they turned onto a narrow alleyway, which led to a dead end. Ethan's heart sank. "We have to back out now!" he shouted, but before they could execute a quick plan, the chasing car skidded to a halt behind them. Just when they thought all hope was lost, a tactical van pulled up, and Agent Harry jumped out, signaling them. "Get in! Now!" The team scrambled out of their vehicle, and with the agents' help, they were ushered into the safety of the tactical van just as the chasing car screeched to a stop behind them, three men jumping out, desperate to catch them. As the team caught their breath in the van, Viktor's voice echoed in their minds. "You're in. Now bigger things." Liam whispered to them, glancing around, "We're in deep. What's next?" Though they were shaken, they all felt a strange thrill rush through them. This was only the beginning, and they realized that the dangerous world they stepped into was just opening its doors wide. With adrenaline pumping through their veins, they looked at each other, knowing they were in this together, and the real adventure had only just begun.
